A good tip for getting the axle to shift out of the wheel bearing is to thread the axle nut back on backwards, almost all the way and put a piece of wood on it before whacking it. Also, always break loose the transmission fill bolt before the drain bolt to avoid being majorly screwed.

22:35 This is something I've found that I question very much. In every instance I've seen this, but no explanation as to why it was designed without it. So weird and it makes no sense cause it's gonna be really hard to line it up without a pilot bearing. Lucky you didn't have any issues with lining the trans up. I'm about to try to do this today.

Outstanding video. Thank you for the time you gave and information you shared. I'm hoping you can help me. I have a 2007 Toyota Matrix, as I understand is the same as a Corolla, I paid a mechanic to change the clutch and flywheel. I lack time and tools to get the job done myself. From the day I picked up my car I have had an ongoing issue that I never had prior to the clutch and FW replacement. You maybe able to shed light on what might be the problem. When driving, regardless of speed or gear I am in, if I go over irregular road surface, e.g. train tracks, the RMP will drop out completely for an instant and then resume. This doesn't happen all the time though, Now the problem has gone from RPM dropping out and resuming correct RPM to stalling the car. When the car stalls it will start right up again and then drive no problem until the next time it happens, which could be at any moment or go for days without a problem. In trouble shooting this I have replaced the spark plugs, new fuel pump assembly, mass air flow sensor and cleaned the intake system. All work done by mechanic (different mechanic who changed out the clutch and FW) hoping that this will fix the problem. He also checked any fuse issues, loose wire harness, ground terminals, and love tapped almost the entire top surface of the engine to see if there's a loose connection somewhere. No luck. When the clutch and FW were replaced, is there a chance that a cable has been stretched or plug that isn't connecting properly in a less obvious place other than the top side of the engine be the cause of this worsening intermittent problem? Any suggestions/advise is welcome. Many thanks, Steve.

Thank you for this video, very informative. I am doing this but engine if off the bay; I took it off the engine bay 3 years ago so I do not remember about the pilot bearing and can not find references anywhere for my 2004 Toyota Corolla CE, the pilot bearing that came in a kit I bought does not fit anywhere, so I ordered Timken pilot bearing from Amazon but may not even need the pilot one, I recon what I need is different Clutch alignment tool that would allow me to center the disk and plate without the bearing; I believe they sell one for $15.00 bucks have seen it before. I have the same clutch kit you are installing here BUT after seen videos on you tube how the plates disks shattered I decided I am ordering Exedy or some other brand, I had an Stage 2 for the Corolla and Stage 3 for a 2000 Tacoma but will be returning them, eventually paying way more for 2 clutch sets from different brands as I want at least stages 2 or 3 for whatever reason itches me. How have your clutch been performing to date? I am curious.

@@MyWhiteWhale I got spoked because there is a video showing 2 you tubers with broken push plate disks, destroyed literally which makes me think twice about those 2 clutches from them; bought them on amazon 30 days exactly today expires the return window, the problem is I already had the flywheel installed when I saw the videos, took it off, cleaned parts and bolts threads and shopping for a new clutch BUT it wont be in until next Friday the earlier, I am frustrated because of my own decision; I do have an EFI OEM replacement Clutch and Push plate with a Steel 17 pound fly wheel that I could install right now but wanted the 13 pound Fly wheel from Clutch Max which is 13 pounds and looks really well made; do not anticipate that part failing EFI clutch kit I bought it at Amazon 3 years ago for $130.00 total, a stage one I figure would install a lighted fly wheel to have a little more response from the car; this is not for racing or drifting, just to be able to drive more aggressively in traffic and get better response; I don't know why I am fixated on an aftermarket clutch, sucks to have all these decisions to make and the engine waiting in the garage!

I would say based on the lack of rust and a decent amount of dust under the hood this tells me you're from Somewhere between Texas and Southern California or Mid to South West but not the North West and most definitely not from anywhere North of Maryland/P.A./NY etc on the East coast because you would have rust everywhere and I see no undercoating. My Corolla was exactly like yours when I got it used with 100k on it because it came from Nevada. After just 2 North Eastern Winters the car is now a rust bucket and it makes relatively easy jobs like a clutch replacement very precarious when bolts get so rusty they snap.

Before you change the clutch on a toyota corolla make sure your slave cylinder on the transmission is not sticking and hanging up. I got a 2007 3 years ago, and the clutch sometimes would slip, esp in 3rd or 4th gear if I gave it a lot of throttle, the tach would jump from 2k to 3k RPM, and then catch again - kinda like if I was riding the clutch with my foot on the pedal. After 3 years and 25k miles it did not get any worse, so it couldnt have been the clutch plate wearing out. Turns out the slave cylinder has been sticky all this time, not letting the clutch fully engage. I pushed it all the way in with my finger several times and the slipping stopped. I sprayed some white lithium grease inside its bellows boot, and now I can feel the clutch is FAR more responsive to pressure on the pedal - its way easier to take off from a stop, I can make the car creep up when I need to... The car had 107 k miles when I got it (for $2800) and I thought I was looking at a $1200 clutch replacement. Now it works like a new car. I can take off from a stop and go thru all 5 gears with the throttle to the floor, and the tach is rock solid - no slipping!

1990's Honda 4 Cylinders were SO EASY compared to this. Also MK2-3 VW's are a piece of cake except the axles are bolted to the trans but with the proper tool from Snap-On and an impact gun they're really not that bad. It's the motor mounts that make doing a clutch on this corolla such a pain in the neck imo. They should have just used a K Frame like VW b/c all those floating rubber mounts don't do a damn THING to help with Vibration on these Corollas. Unsprung weight blah blah blah.
