Toyota Corona Wagon Sharpie/Marker Art Car

A good friend of mine invited me to do some marker artwork on a car he was building; a 1973 Toyota Corona Wagon. We talked about different ideas and layouts and ultimately landed at the rising sun inspired design coming from the passenger rear wheel. The artwork stretches over part of the roof and drivers side in an asymmetrical design giving the car a different look from side to side. Done completely freehand, the design was completed over the course of 3 days. Paint Markers made by Montana, Molotow, and Sharpie were used then the car was clear coated to seal in the artwork.
I would also like to add that the term Sharpie Car has become a general term for a Marker Art Car just like sometimes people say Coke when referring to any soda.

Love love love!! Im working on my 8th car design (89 celica). Although a little less professionally than you. Hand painting giraffe print, wont bother with clear coat (cheap car and paint i use, it barely fades). Im probably one of a few in Adelaide (South Australia) that does this. Lets just say, it gets me noticed. 😉

I think you can use Tar, oil removers and that will be it.... I know man it's hard getting a response after 4 years. lol

were the guide lines that you went over in black also markers? what can you use anything to faintly map out your design? -since you can't erase a permanent marker like you can when sketching on paper

I never sketch out a full design but in the case of this car I did want the long black lines to be a bit more itentianally plotted in the design as they were the frame work for everything else. I simply used Stabilo pencil to sketch a long line and used the paint marker freehand straight over that

omg amazing work !😍 I wanted to know if I don't use a clear coat how long would the sharpie last? cause I want something temporary. plus, do you know if the sharpie or the acrylic marker damage my car's paint? 😀

Thank you! From experience I would say you could get non clear coated Sharpie artwork to last several months of you care for it, but ultimately it will fade and clean off which can be a good thing: brand new canvas. As far as damaging the surface I would say the Sharpies will be less aggressive on the surface vs paint markers. If you're looking for a safe but bold route, give Industrial Strength Sharpies a try. Definitely! It wasn't shown here, but the shop clear coated the car after the artwork was done so it's sealed

Generally yes, but it is always a good idea to do a test panel with all the materials you plan to use 1st to be sure of comparability
