I just had my timing chain cover resealed on my 16 Tacoma SR5. I was lucky I just bought it and it was certified pre-owned and it was covered under warranty. The dealership had it for 3 days. Than I had to take it back because the pulleys were rattleing and 2 of them had to be replaced, which was covered by the warranty also. Other than that it's been running good. I agree this is a solid truck I plan on keeping a long time.

It’s also occurred on the 3.5 liter transverse engine on the Highlander and Avalon. That engine had to be dropped along with the transmission after the axles were removed in order the access the timing chain cover plus the O rings and copper crush washers on the timing chain cover. I sold my Avalon at 87,000 miles and it was gone within a week. Peter while there, you might want to recommend the owner of that Tacoma to replace the timing chain, tensióners and timing chain guides to further extend the life of that engine.

Those are a pain to do. You have to remove the upper oil pan. And if it’s 4wd you remove the front differential. Be careful there is a ball plug type in that area. Oil comes from that sometimes. Appears to be the timing cover. It is part of the cylinder head. The ball type plug. Definitely not worth the labor it pays.

I just had the timing cover seal redone on my 2016 Tacoma with 131,000 miles. Never have I had any of my precious Tacoma’s or any other vehicle I’ve owned leak like this. It came on very suddenly. They did replace it without removing engine. Was told it took 20 hours. My truck was 6000 miles behind the extended warranty ending. But service manager worked with Toyota to get this covered for me. I had to pay a $500 “good faith” share, which was really upsetting as this is a known issue in these engines. So far so good. Have a hear warranty on it. So keeping an eye on it. Note mine was leaking in the exact same spot. I thought initially power steering pump. But it was timing cover seal. Ironically the chirp in the power steering pump I’ve had with this truck since it was new is now gone. It would never chirp at the dealer for them to hear. So evidently all that oil spraying around fixed the chirp. I first became aware of this leak from engine oil dripping off the frame under the drivers side door! Was spraying and fan and wind carried it back fo frame. Just very sad that a regicide could have this major a repair at least than 5 years old.

@@ba_brisk I don’t know. They worked on it for two full days. But first I would beat the dealership up and even call corporate. This is a known issue and I have heard others getting it repaired for $500. It seems as though they are quietly taking care of them. My guess is it would have been $1800 to $2000. There are no parts other than RVTrader sealant. It’s all labor. And well worth it. I’m near 160,000. Running like the day I drove it out of the showroom. Best Tacoma I’ve ever owned.

@@ba_brisk work through the service manager. Tell them same thing you just told me. Tell them you are aware this is a known issue. There is also a customer service number in the warranty user manual. Worst case, how bad is it leaking? Keep an eye on the oil. Add as needed. Unless it’s leaking on the serpentine belt it’s not really going to hurt anything. If your not losing more than a few ounces at a time just keep adding oil let it drip out. It’s not like this could be a catastrophic failure. Just may get worse over time. How many miles on the truck? There are also some after market stop leak products you can add to the oil. They kind of scare me. But I’ve seen a couple other threads where people say they have worked on the gen 2 4 liter engines.

@@homebuiltcamperdave5226 im not confident that it even is the timing chain cover yet. I got a Low Oil Level (it was NOT low oil pressure, it was low engine oil level warning) warning before the holiday weekend. I looked at it yesterday and the skid plate is coated with oil as well as most of the underside of the truck. When i changed my oil 2000 miles ago i did notice that the oil filter housing cap was acting wonky and the small O ring was installed improperly and the oil drained without having to use the drain plug that comes with the oil cartridge. I will replace the cap as well as the gasket on the timing chain tensioner inspection port as well since they are both super cheap and easy DIY fixes. Gonna clean and degrease and keep an eye on it. This is good information to have incase it is a bigger issue.

Which gets old when I rely on this truck for my work and every minute I sit in the dealership is lost work and they take an entire day with my truck sitting there just to tell me they won't do anything. And I've been nothing but nice. I purchased a tacoma without looking at anything else because of their reputation and I've been nothing but let down by the truck and the dealership. In the US, the 2gr fks timing cover reseal pays 13 hours under warranty and takes at best 3 days to do. This is a common low mileage fault. Also look out for a fuel ratio imbalance code as well. That means an exhaust valve seat is fried. This repair pays 18 hours for 2wd and 21 hours for 4wd. If its 4wd the front diff has to come out first and it takes 6 days to repair.
