Great collaboration, liked the relaxed and casual tone of the video, please do more stuff together. One question, does the Yaris feel like it need a bit more torque down low (considering highly strung little 1.6l triple cylinder engine)? I heard from some reviewers that they have to rev it up a bit to get into the power band. I'm very disappointed I won't have a chance to drive one since they won't be coming to the US which sucks unless I manage to go to Nurburgring and rent one for a few laps (from Apex guys). I somehow think that the Yaris GR would be even more fun if it came with 2.0l four cylinder engine and some 300-330hp. I heard that the HKS guys are already pushing 375hp with upgraded turbo and they even added 100hp nitrous shot and stock internals are still taking it. This car is a huge success for Toyota.

To be honest it doesn't feel like its lacking torque. It has a fairly decent mid range punch and also holds power at the top end pretty well. Check out our dyno video for the power graph

That moment you work at MINI as an engineer and you see Toyota release the car you should have build as the new GP. Instead you get told to add a bunch of horrible looking arches to the body work, because that is what GP stands for instead of installing a proper adjustable suspension, decent rubber from an A-brand and cooling for the engine.

Definitely adds to the Fun Factor, though and has been the biggest complaint about the GP in the MINI forum I follow. You say the engine could do with cooling. I know my Gen III JCW has added cooling over the S model, which works well out on the track. I thought I read that the GP has even more cooling than what the JCW has. Not enough?
@Shmarc1504 жыл бұрын
@@Eddie07S the gearbox is not my number one concern, also because I know BMW wouldn't have been able to make the business case work because of homologation. Nowhere in the BMW or MINI lineup this engine configuration is connected to a manual, and only doing for 3000 pieces would make the car too expensive. They could however have fit better engine cooling. The car doesn't have the lower engine cover underneath the car because of the cooling issues. Together with my tuner we dived into the engine characteristics and the thermal set up of the car is horrific. It needs a different intercooler desperately to at least be able to keep the performance levels at all circumstances, and then we are not even talking about tuning it. Without it, it won't be able to hold on to the increased 306 hp at every single instance. It was a bit like a W T F moment when we saw the results of the tests we did. The engine and especially the turbo are strangled up to a point that you are like this can't be true. Also this 2.0 liter engine runs stock a turbo pressure that gets you 306 hp, while if you would run the same pressure on similar 2.0 liter 4 cylinder VAG engine you would have in access of 450 hp.

If BMW/MINI would build an even more stripped down GP with a rear biased all wheel drive system it would probably interest more petrol heads and be more of a driver focused car than what's on offer today. They've gotten too big imo and need to go back to their roots(i'm sure that's not an option tho). My first "track day car" was an 06 DINAN S Cooper and I loved that car, it was nimble and had perfect power for the chassis. People bought Mini's because of their handling and quirky looks. Now Toyota has captured that spirit and people are going bat shit crazy for the GR Yaris. This is just my shitty .02 worth, but I've heard lots of other enthusiasts say something similar.

Toyota is finally back with this Yaris. Hopefully the Corolla for the US will be almost as fun.

When the Hyundai Kona N comes out, get these 2 cars together with the Kona N and do the same run and comment on the 3.

Yaris would win on a dry track, for one it's about 7secs quicker round the nurburgring than a gp3, an that was cold damp conditions for the yaris.....gp3 sunny day 🤷🏻♂️ and the yaris weighs more!!

We cannot forget the Toyota was tunned by Tommi Makinen and that makes all the difference, because he came from the EVO school, for me is still the king on a B road. At the same time for the conditions the GT FOUR system does majic in greasy conditions, almost to a ridiculous level of effort looking that's is dry. On the other hand the Mini is a very fast hot hatch much faster if it was dry conditions, but in the wet you really need to upgrade that front diff and those tyres for a more even match. Darkside developments put a quaife in there mini which is a diesel and with the reprogrammed output must have more torque than the GP3.
