Toyota Highlander 2017 0184 Entune reboot fix

I updated my Toyota GPS map to also fix a reboot problem with Entune. My Nexus 6P phone when paired to the car would cause Entune to constantly reboot while driving. After installing the update Entune no longer reboots.

Just added the Micro SD. Update loaded like a charm, following your instructions. It seems I may not be able to to tune into the HD Radio stations that I had prior. I will have to drive it (2015 Toyota Highlander) a bit to see what happens. I too was having problems with the system locking up and re-booting. I am using an Apple iphone 5 series. Did not know iPhones were also having issues. Mine is still working great since I updated, it has not rebooted once.

Thanks for this video, FYI for anyone that might encounter the same issue I did. I bought 0185 off of Amazon, installed it, and it updated 3 times. After that I was still seeing this issue, I jumped on a toyota forum and saw people having this issue with the Entune app installed on their iphones. I uninstalled the entune app, rebooted my phone and voila, the unit no longer reboots. I am not sure if it was a combination of things that fixed it, or if the Entune app is conflicting somehow, I am leaning towards the latter. I would say try to uninstall the Entune app and reboot your phone first, I also re-paired the phone, just in case haha. I don't regret buying the update, because now my maps are updated. So thank you!

Before I bought the map update, I reinstalled the app, factory reset the phone (Nexus 6P), paired it multiple times and nothing fixed it. When I installed the map update that finally resolved it. The phone and enTune worked perfectly for months, it was an Android update the started the whole mess for me.

@@GaryQuiring Ok, so just to follow up, my issue was different than yours. I spoke to soon when I said it was the entune app. The issue reappeared, frustrated I took it to toyota, they did an update, it seems to always work upon the first pairing process, once the unit reboots after the first pairing, then the issue reoccurs. So, finally I had a chat with the service guy and he said that he has seen that happen when people have pictures as part of some of their contacts on their phone. I tried it, and disabled contact syncing, and after driving the car repeatedly I can now say this is not happening to me any longer. I never used the contact syncing anyway, so I do not care too much about it.

​@@erickfcc That's really weird, 99% of my contacts have photo contacts with them. I'm currently using an Android Pixel and it's running fine.

@@GaryQuiring It probably has to do with having an iPhone, as I do. My wife never had this problem, and she has a Note 7. I hope they fix it, because I have been in numerous cars and this has never happened. Ah well, it's working now :)

Thanks for the video. I also have a 2015 highlander. My navigation system would constantly crash and reboot so I ordered the 2017 map update which solved all of this problems back in 2017. About a week ago I started having similar issues particularly with my AirPods constantly unsynching and the Nav started rebooting so I ordered and just received the new 2019 update and am currently loading the software. I get it for $50 on amazon. Original OEM SD. Hopefully this update solves these new gremlins just like the 2017 update fixed all of my previous problems. Oh yeah I completely agree with not going to the stealership. They wanted $170 to perform the upgrade. 🤦‍♂️

Can you post the link, for $50 I would not mind having updated maps and updates. I'm still using a Pixel XL phone which is working but I am in the market for a new phone. It would not surprise me if the newer phones would screw-up the Entune system.

Thank you! It worked. The voice recognition is still an issue, but I think it might be combination of the mic and the software poor design.

Toyota's enTune will never have a voice recognition that will work as well as Google or Alexa. Newer versions of the Toyota cars have Android Auto which I assume are much better but I'm not ready to trade in my '15 yet, it only has 30k miles on it!

Does anyone know how to override the safety feature, not allowing my passenger to change our destination on GPS while I am driving? Theoretically, the vehicle knows a person is sitting in the passenger's seat. That is why the air bag is activated-through sensor in seat for weight.Why not let the passenger update my destination or search map while I am driving. This safety feature makes me HATE using the GPS. Please help

i have a 2017 prius. i had the same issue. i do not have entune though. the cars we have out here are EU (or GCC) spec. but i have the EXACT same issue. i removed the SD card but it still randomly reboots, with or without anything paired.

FWIW... you can now download the new Entune software from Toyota for free and install it and not have to buy a new maps card. I already had a micro SD card and put the software on it and it installed just like the video. Put the old maps card back in for the maps and everything is good to go. Since the Entunes software on the maps card is older, it does not try to change anything.

I just bought a 2015 Highlander. I have an iPhone 8+ and I have had a lot of complaints about an echo when I talk on the phone using the Bluetooth connection. Does anyone know if this will also fix that issue? I plan on purchasing the SD card because my system does reboot itself, but it would be a bonus if it fixed the echo problem also.

I have not seen any complaints on that issue, so no idea. But since your enTune is booting it's worth upgrading.

My 2015 highlander doesn't have that chip insert section. Is there any other place it is located?

Then you must not have a stock GPS unit from Toyota, because my Toyota is the 2015 model.

It's working great, Entune is no longer rebooting while I am driving.

Gary Quiring great to hear. Thanks for the video. I just bought a preowned 2014 highlander and having issue of rebooting . I am very new to the car but what I found interesting is what you observed about not seeing the navigation between the steering wheel monitor. I did notice that but not sure if it coinciding with it going out. I am also unaware that it the map also carries other software. Would rather try this than go through the non Toyota dealer who sold me the car and probably don't know what they are doing or Toyota overcharging me. I thought I needs a firmware update. Thanks

He shows you the version update number which is the same as yours. So essentially I believe what you did is all the dealer does.....watch version number lol

You need to buy the map update. I got mine on ebay. Just make sure the auction says 0184 2017 map.

You need to look for 0E184. Anything else like 0E180 is older and not the most recent. Average price on ebay is around $90 bucks.

Maybe you got the wrong version for your car? Are you answering the question correctly when it prompts for the update? You have to leave the ignition on during the update which takes several minutes.

Our 2014 Highlander has had nothing but problems with the entune system. Toyota replaced the head unit once and the CPU once, but since then they have just told us "user error" whenever we experience problems with reboots or just plain old non-functionality. They're patched and updated it numerous times. It'll work for a few days or even weeks, then will stop receiving phone calls or texts, or will even refuse to recognize an iPhone connected via Bluetooth or the hardwire. Toyota told us it's an iPhone incompatibility. Garbage. Replacing the whole thing with a Pioneer system with wireless CarPlay.

That is not entirely true, the dealer will not update your maps for free. And when I tried to get the bluetooth update back when I made this video the dealer was not offering a free update. I think that's going to vary by dealer.

Toyota will give you a free update just by staring at the stereo without changing the sd card then charge you for their hard labor. lol. i just gave them a call because i need an update and the parts department guy said its $169.99 for the sd card. U.S version. thanks to the ppl of ebay you can save $100.

Nobody should pay for an sd card bought on ebay. Toyota lets you download the latest update for free which suits your vehicle year and model

They don't let you download the map update for free. And at the time when I made the video the firmware fix for the bluetooth was not available on the web site. You had to visit a dealer.
