Hey Scotty, my father has a 2003 Dodge Durango SLT our engine is shaking it sounds like it one for the cylinders it not the engine mounts and all the plugs have been changed white smoke is coming out of the exhaust I think it’s a cylinder head crack should we fix it or should we just junk it for a Corolla? It’s got 163k miles.

Best vehicle I ever owned was a 1988 Toyota 4Runner. It had a 4 cyl 22RE motor, small lift with huge tires (like that when I bought it), and a 5 speed transmission. Before going to college, I gave it to my dad because I wanted something smaller for the travelling. It had 300k miles on it. He drove it for years, putting another 300k miles on it. The body rusted in half, and a guy bought the motor to put in his truck, and is still driving it today. Never had an issue with that little motor.

I have a turbocharged Mini Cooper S. It's pretty zippy. A few of the guys I work with, they think they are fast in their base model Corollas and Civics and Nissan Sentra. The other day they took off, trying to do a burnout, and the smokers standing there waiting for the next shift to start started talking bout it and I was like "You think that's cool? You think that's fast?" Well I got in my car and I really took off out of the parking lot and I looked back in the rearview and their jaws were floored. Needless to say, don't rice your car, put real power under the hood.

I always used to say that long before when they nust created cvt transmission that gear is called a final drive it takes away the strain off the belt during kick off and also extent the continuous drive at high speed so the fluid wont have to boil due to tension
@MainMite06
@MainMite06 4 жыл бұрын
The CVT fluid isnt being spoiled from actuating motion from the pumps, *The fluid is getting spoiled from high engine heat* Modern day cars deliberatly run 180+ degrees fahrenheit as a homeostatic temperature to clean the emissions at the cost of engine power. Epicyclic transmissions are designed to handle high heat, in fact they can run their best in high heat, Because epicyclic transmissions use a mix heavy petroleum/mineral oil thats meant to control friction rather than lubricating metal as priority CVTs on the other hand use a mineral oil thats more relatable to dot3-4 brake fluid than ATF. The CVT fluid is designed to be more of a lubricant than a friction modifier, In truth CVT fluids dont like high heat, this is has been the true crux of why CVTs been failing before 50K miles. The poor CVT has to deal with the heat of it needing to actuate it's pumps while being to attatched to a lava-hot ICE The fluid can be poured in red or clear grey, and then after 40K miles it could be drained out motor oil black. CVT fluids are freakin' weaksauce

The biggest problem with American automotive companies is that they start at the bottom line profit and work everything in from there. The first thing they should do is make all engineers work on the assembly line and also make them listen to the production crew about problems or ideas. I worked in Research and Development with all type engineers/designers and were taught to keep our ears and eyes open for total input. An example is our operating manual was written by Tech Writers but tested by our secretaries who never touched the machine. So many little things were found that were left out or put in the wrong steps. Our production workers found steps to make it easier to install some of the modules.

Scotty did you ever see the all-electric transmission that was prototyped for the early VIA Trucks? The Gas V6 engine under the hood had an electric motor mounted to the back of it, then in the rear of the truck directly connected to the rear axle was a unit that had 2 different internal electric motors. 1 for acceleration and 1 for highway driving. They stated in their display booth in Vegas that it had better acceleration than a stock V6 silverado in motor 1 mode, then once you got to 45mph, it would apply the power to the 2nd motor which was designed to reduce power consumption at 45+ mph speeds. The test drive they did was undetectable of any transition. It was kinda unique that the output of the motor on the back of the gas engine was directly powering the rear motor for propulsion.

CVT's have actually been around a long time! Leonardo da Vinci designed the first concept. Milton Reeves invented a CVT for his saw mill in 1879 and later in 1896 he applied to his first car. A CVT was used in the British Clyno car, introduced in 1923.

CVT transmissions can launch fast and Toyota could make them launch faster, but it isn’t all about acceleration for most drivers. They want cars that take off quietly and don’t sound like they are struggling to leave a stop light. My Mustang has a torque converter that lets it launch at 4,000 rpms if I want to and it is insanely loud while doing so. Yet it also don’t really fully engage under 2,000rpms. It’s either performance or comfort. If you want both then you have to pay for a $100,000 Tesla p100D. But then you have to worry about your next charging station. It’s all about trade offs. It’s as simple as that.

The CVT in hybrid toyota is different from CVT in gas toyotas. The hybrid one is planetary gears (power split device) called eCVT. The other one is two cones and they are just like you said they do slip. The solution to that it has a dedicated discreet gear called launch gear.
@cc-tb3st
@cc-tb3st 6 ай бұрын
Nobody knows this. Everyone thinks the hybrid ecvt is a belt. No belt at all, it's actually a differential. Toyota does things and names things for marketing for the lowest common denominator customer. For example, using a gas engine instead of diesel on Prius, a car designed for fuel mileage. Diesel would be so much better but the average consumer wouldn't buy it because they aren't familiar with diesel. Or the artificial drag Toyota put when you release the gas to imitate the drag of a normal car. Even though that drag is being turned into energy stored in the battery for use later, it's still more efficient to conserve momentum and not artificially slow the car. I love my Prius, but I would love it even more if it was diesel and didn't have the artificial drag. I also wish the diesel was a generator and didn't actually drive the wheels. It just put energy in the battery and electric motors actually did all the work. Exactly like the new Edison semi.

I see a parallel in the building industry: main companies using sub-contractors to finish a project in order to cut the cost of directly-employed staff. The 'subbies' and the transmissions from a different maker have less commitment to excellence because their name is not on the main product and they have no share in the profit (if there is one). Economists call this the casualisation of labour but Scotty with his poetic turn of phrase would probably call it 'a pile of crap'. He would be right.

LAUNCH GEAR... Does it work for PASSING? Some CVTs have problems when passing on the highway.
@MainMite06
@MainMite06 4 жыл бұрын
Sgt. SLaughter The answer is: No *The purpose for launch gear in this car is to only be the "underdrive gear" , (1st-4th gear equivalent) for launching from a standstill* Normal belted CVTs use two pulleys to manipulate the gear ratio applied to the engine. The input is the pulley that takes engine power. The output is the pulley connected to the output shaft & differential. When you launch a normal CVT from standstill *the input pulley is squeezed and the output is relaxed to make the "underdrive gear" so the car can launch from a standstill quicker* When you're cruising at a steady speed, *the cvt is in its 'rest' position "direct drive", so both pulleys are at rest & the belt is at equal length between the two. *but, when the vehicle has to cross 30-100mph quietly CVT needs to be in "overdrive" (5th-6th gear equivalent) * A normal CVT goes into overdrive by adding pressure to the output pulley and relieving pressure from the input pulley. Whenever a normal CVT has to make panic acceleration, or downshift for acceleration, - *the output pulley gets relieved & the input pulley now is squeezed temporarily to make the engine rev quickly until the high speed is reached, once the high is reached the CVT goes into "overdrive" to slow the engine* In these Toyotas whenever you need to panic-accelerate- *the CVT relieves the output shaft to squeeze the input shaft to speed the engine up* -Just like any other CVT.. The fixed gear is solely used for getting the car moving!

Wait a moment, doesnt scotty say to wait a few years to see how well new tech works out before buying into it? Isnt a gear for initial acceleration in CVT transmission a new technology?
@MainMite06
@MainMite06 4 жыл бұрын
Flightsimguy There are different styles of CVTs, like the Toroid style, but the conventional belted CVT is the one Scotty hates. *Normal CVTs use a regular automatic clutch pack for a reverse gear* Otherwise in a normal CVT, whenever your car is sitting & put into "drive" -The lockup converter locks up like a dry clutch -the input pully is squeezed to make an "underdrive" (so now the CVT is now in 1-4th equivalent) -The CVT will stay in "underdrive" until you're already moving, -once youre moving, the CVT will release pressure from the input pulley & go into "direct drive" (4-5th equivalent) *with Toyota the 'underdrive' function is now done by the rigid clutch pack* *The CVT belt no longer has to 'underdrive' itself again*
