I was determined to find some more power for the MR2 after failing to do so at the last dyno session. So did I?

This is the thing so many people don’t understand. They go after peak numbers and don’t think about actual driveability and performance on track. Glad you put this together to show why it’s important to not just go chasing the biggest number and power under the curve is a lot more important.

Apexi adapter speeds the air up over the MAF (con-di nozzle), tricking the ECU to think you're a couple of hundred RPM ahead of where you are and overfuelling accordingly. As long as it doesn't choke (me daddy) at the top it will be good in the right engine that responds to more liquid life. 1zz probably doesn't like being forced rich in the mid range. I also run cone filters regardless of power, because tunes.

Yeah fair, I was kinda disappointed it didn’t win as it was a nice design with the venturi effect tings. Just slightly too rich for optimal though! The 2ZZ stayed perfect all the way

The car is remaped, so no flat spots on the Ramair setup :) now we ar trying with the BMC CDA carbon system :)

That apexi is using the venturi effect which is cause by the constriction by the MAF, speeds up the flow through just that section where the reading is taken, but ultimately slows back down straight after this is probably why you had such a change in AFR. I don't know the limitations of your class but it would be interesting if you could trying improving laminar flow by messing around with boundary layers, surface dimples could help. Great video as always, keep up the good work!
@iansimpson8309
@iansimpson8309 3 жыл бұрын
I could be wrong, but when you're talking about AFRs around 23.45, the 2zz is running at 13.5 which is slightly richer than the stock airbox which you said was around 14, not leaner as I think you suggested. Any mixture ratio lower than 14.7 to 1 is considered to be rich. In general a car should idle around 14.7 (stoichiometric) but when accelerating (especially in open loop), the extra rich mixture provides cooling for the combustion chamber and provides a safety net to help avoid pre-detonation (knock). This is my (very basic) understanding of how it works, so may be a load of twaddle. :) Some nice gains there and although we didn't see the benefits of them at Snetterton, hopefully it'll become apparent at the next races when you're hopefully feeling better on the day!

Hey Danny.👋 We started off with a couple from Hall and Oates in the Autobarn and ended with the MR2 singing a good tune at HSP. Good chunes all around.🎶😉 Yes, the Apexi is sexy and hips don't lie, but Toyota knows best... kinda. Very cool that you were able to test all those combinations of parts and see what your engine likes best. Science is good. Increased area under the curve is always a win and hopefully that'll be translated at the track. Maybe it won't be so damn hot at the next race. Looking forward to it, Dan. Have a good afternoon. BTW, I had my first sip from the DC2 mug yesterday and I'm about to go back for round 2. Cheers.✌😎

You need one final test. That is on a track day or test day try them both seeing how high your top speed at Snetterton or Silverstone or one may perform better at Cadwell. Horses for courses Dyno is good proof but need that final test and I look forward too seeing how you keep the filter with cold air.

Good marginal gains all add up! I'm guessing that even on track heatsoak could be hurting your performance. Original airbox plus a good foam filter (ITG are nice) might perform better than a cone if the engine bay is baking hot. Might be worth logging air intake temperature via ODB2. Cold air is power so I'd do everything to keep the heat away from the intake. Zircoflex III to make a barrier, Reflect-a-Gold heatshield, maybe ceramic coat parts to keep heat in exhausts and heat out of intakes. Plus, from a distance, it will look like a McLaren F1 engine bay and you can pretend to be Goldfinger.

@PatrickLipp
@PatrickLipp Жыл бұрын
just coming across this video after someone posted it on Spyderchat and I see a few massive flaws in your testing. First and foremost, you didn't allow the ecu to create new fuel trims for each respective intake and/or air filter swap, so as soon as those are created for your new mod, the dyno results would change. Because of this, your AFR's for each run would be different, the load levels and respective load cells used for fueling and timing would be vastly different for the different intakes, etc. If you tested the stock intake with the vane in tact, created the long term fuel trims, and then switched to a 2.5" intake with no vanes and immediately did a dyne pull, you would see the car would be running lean. So long as it's not too lean and you don't see any misfires, this may give you positive results on the dyno because the same load cells used for fueling would also have more advanced timing, creating increased power. You would see this same effect using the MAF mode on a 1zz. What you should have done to make this a valid test is to do a baseline dyno run and then without doing anything else, just remove the air filter and do another run. Then switch intake systems, reset the ECU and then do about 10-15 minutes of streat driving, check that the LTFT's have been created and then do another set of dyno pulls. After that, rinse and repeat, that way the ECU has a chance to do what It needs to do to create proper fuel trims, and have repeatable tests.

Any recomendations?

You could port the Apexi, slim those hips… Never bought into the standard air box argument, find me a racing car that runs the standard road car airbox unless it has to for homologation…. Induction Kits 👌
@DanVal4
@DanVal4 3 жыл бұрын
You are correct. However, one of the reason behind the stock airbox argument is that the plenum (intake) design isn't simply just a fluid flow problem but also a harmonics one. So to design a highly effective system you need to factor in both of these, which takes a lot of resources and knowledge. You can use CFD and and CAD to design a nice intake system that has really nice flow characteristics but if you haven't designed it harmonically to take advantage of the pressure waves etc occuring in the intake system you aren't gonna see an improvement in performance.

I'd say Toyota does know best but it depends on what they are going for. Peak power is certainly not the highest part on the agenda. Tweaking how much air flows through the maf obviously changes the tune. Back in the bad old days you could lower the maf reading a bit and it would add timing and reduce fuelling which would basically make a bit more power but increase cylinder temps (may knock) In modern cars it's a bit less of a thing but after you uncork the exhaust etc you can do the same thing as you have shown. Pretty fun playing around with all this isn't it

@@dannyDC2 Looking forward to it. I've been reading and watching some videos about cooling in general (mostly intercooler as the size I can run is limited to the space in the front of the car). Found that air doesn't really flow in if it doesn't have a low pressure on the other side (inside the engine bay) hence venting the bonnet soon on my RX8. Tricky thing to master this whole airflow thing but very interesting. Hope you find a solution soon.
