Toyota Land Cruiser 6x6. Spectacular. Dubai-Oman. Part-1

In February 2016 I took a remarkable vehicle into Oman. A Toyota Land Cruiser 79-pickup, 6x6. This is part-1 of a short series of videos about my adventure in the UAE and Oman. Unlike the Mercedes 6x6, the Land Cruiser 6x6 has an active third axle, which means that the articulation keeps weight on both rear axles for as long as possible.
Parts 2 and 3 include our ride through the spectacular mountains of Oman as well as a review of the driving qualities of this 6x6 workhorse.

I went to Dubai for a family vacation and it's amazing. Then we got a chance to ride a Land Cruiser over the sand dunes. It was the best! The family fell in love with it and we decided to get one.

Those AOR straps are kinetic. They are made for you to get the recovery truck up to a reasonable speed and then slingshot the stopped truck out of its predicament. The stretch tremendously and then contract and boom....slingshot the stopped truck out.

Great video These tyres are not good for crossing the desert more load on the engine more fuel consumption & you have to keep the air pressure below 25 psi .

+OjBlack100 Well, Dubai is amazing, and it sets the scene for the vehicle and trip. I make 4x4 travel shows, not just 4x4s charging around over rocks etc. There are plenty of channels that show that.

Did you ever get to witness the dune events that happen held by local based 4wd club .. ... but they treat dune driving very differently... all the 4wd's have got tuned engines .. Also what's the procedure if you happen drive into quicksand ?

I understand they have very deep wells for water every so often and camels can go a long time between drinks but what about food? You can run the BFG tires on 8-10 psi easily depending on the load you carrying. 15 psi or above wont even bend the sidewalls on light load !

I have just completed 10600 km trip in Namibia and had the same tyres. I do not rate them in sand, never got stuck but they made hard work on some sections of sand and river bed.Even at 1.2 bar

1,2 bar does not seem very low for thick sand. My guess is that is wasn't the tyre, but the pressures.

hi mate, you are correct, it is multidrive, The side of vehicle above the rear axels has the logo. Also Andrew speaks about Multi Drive in Part 4 of this expedition. Also I think he covers it part 2 when discussing the configuration. hope you enjoyed the series

You should visit the western region of the capital Abu Dhabi specifically Liwa desert, its desert is a part of the big desert in the Arabian peninsula known as the empty quarter. If you cone at the first week of January there will a festival and competition of climbing a dune known as Mureeb dune( means scary dune) it is about 300 meters high

I often see you recovering vehicles in your videos with the pulling vehicle using reverse. I was always taught not to do it that way if possible to avoid damage to the gearbox. Any reason you do, or is it just 'luck' that I've only seen that kind of recovery?

1.2 on the back and 1.6 on the front is the recommended pressure any lower and the Landcruiser does rock and roll. Khaudum was no problem but some riverbeds ( i did not do sand dunes)were a little bit harder. Remember normal pressure is 3 bar and 2.4 bar Tyres were completely shagged at the end of the trip and were brand new at the start.

Who recommended this pressure? Did they know the weight of your vehicle, the type of tyres and how they react to deflation. Weight distribution front and back? Generalizations like this are not a good idea to follow. Every truck will behave differently. 1.2 and 1.6 means the sand was not particularly thick, and if you struggled, the pressures were too high.
