I just did this "fix" on my 2021, there is no corrosion anywhere, and I live in the NW with full-blown winters. Still, I applied grease on the seal and mesh.

Thanks for sharing the video. I think the band and shielding is not just for support of the connection, rather it is the ground/neutral connection. If you take out the shielding, it will generate a Fault Code and Hybrid system will not work. It seems it is more than just rust, more likely Galvanic corrosion.

Yeah, he says it like a fact it's just a cable support but it is more than that. Once the ground gets corroded there is static on the AM stereo that is the first warning an issue is coming. So we know it at least provides protection against electromagnetic interference (EMI).

any ideas if toyota fix this issue with the 2023 models?

No it did not

Ofcourse they did: they removed AM radio from factory in order not to be warned about the corrosion until is to late …maybe out of warranty.

The 2023 models have a foam gasket at the interface where the connector mates to the drive motor. The metal might be different on the 2023's but there's no way to know without having it tested as toyota is very quiet about this issue. The hybrid warranty now includes the cable for up to and including the 2022 model, but not the 2023. I doubt it's a perfect fix and that won't come until the next gen comes out likely in 2025. I removed the connector on day 2 and confirmed the foam gasket, applied more dielectric grease on the internal rubber seal, reconnected, and sprayed it with Fluid Film ( all on day 2 of ownership). Important to note, if you open the disconnect for the hybrid battery under the rear seat, ensure that when you close it, you also need to push upwards as a final closing of the switch. There are contacts on the arm that need to be made or the RAV4 will think the battery is still disconnected.

Curious why you didn’t clean the rust off? What about spraying it with Flex Seal, or wrapping it in Flex Seal Tape? Also, I mentioned this in your first video. Some Toyota Mechanics are recommending a small hole in the bottom of the plastic cover to allow water drainage! I’m waiting for my 2023 Rav4 Hybrid to arrive and will definitely address this problem immediately. Thanks for the updated video!

are you sure 2023 rav has no such problem? I see someone mentioned 2023 cable is same as 2022. If you can share more info that will be appreciated.

@@benjiang6493 it’s not been resolved on my 2023 Rav4 Hybrid. Service Manager didn’t even know much about the current repair situation. They did caution me to hold off repairing it myself to avoid any warranty issues. Obviously Toyota HQ’s is fully aware of the pending litigation for this issue. They’ll definitely have to fix it sooner or later!

@@Bigsmegma44 I talked to one of the biggest dealer in Toronto area, they confirmed received Toyota canada' instructions to handle 19 to 22 models cable issues (there's a website mentioned this news and I wanted to double check). However 2023 is NOT on the list so I am wondering if 2023 cable design changed or not. Probably they will cover 2023 model later. I am also wondering if I should do any rust proofing myself ...

How did this design pass. Do they not do a basic analysis of how the elements will affect all the stuff at the bottom? Ridiculous

Especially at the position of that wire, Toyota should have made a better plastic covers that seals better that cable.

Smear thin some Permatex Gray RTV on that rubber seal, to seal it permanently. It will certainly seal for good. Just a smear, too much will make the connector hard to remove in the future

Shilding removal DOESN'T SET FAULT CODES!!! If shielding was there to provide ground, then corrosion would disconnect it and set a code. Shilding only supports cables! On my 2019Rav4 without disconnecting electrical cable I: 1- detached the connector assembly from rear drive housing (there are two bolts at the top of connector assembly mounting it to housing) 2- opened the orange cover, removed completely the shilding, cleaned the exposed cables and connector aluminum housing 3- filled the two orange cover pieces with clear high temp. silicone, closed them on exposed cables and attached to connector (excess silicone was pushed out during closing of the orange cover) 4- applied silicone all around the connector joint to prevent any moisture and dirt from getting into cavity where the rubber seal is between the two connector parts No fault codes were set and there more than 2500 miles on the odometer since the fix. Applying grease creates magnet 🧲 for dirt and dirt has ability to retain moisture. By eliminating cavities for collecting contaminants I might be able to avoid costly replacement of this long cable, which runs all the way to engine compartment. The orange cover on my vehicle has a full back piece. On later models Toyota released connector cover with large part of the back cut out to improve drying. However it didn't help, but only increased opportunity for collecting dirt.
