I ~finally~ got the green-light from Toyota for my recall for this issue. My R4P's VIN was a less than 500#, so this has taken forever. I'm taking the car in this week to get the cable replaced at the local dealership. I just wanted to comeback around and thank you for making this video.

Thank you for sharing this video sir, I am an owner of a 2020 Toyota RAV4 hybrid, I must say I really like the vehicle. This video is very helpful as I was avoiding all hybrids originally for years due to a possible concern such as the present concern. I will be making an appointment to have the component in question inspected by my local Toyota dealer/technician. This is extremely disappointing that Toyota has been aware of this issue since 2020 ,has failed to address the issue of an integral part that corrodes! The good thing about this is the RAV4 is an extremely big seller in the Toyota lineup and if we could get all owners to join together we could provide the voice needed to provide the power to pressure Toyota to do the right thing. Toyota needs to address this issue immediately! I urge all Toyota owners that have this integral part that could possibly corrodes to start drafting letters over to your local dealers, Toyota CEO, and the local news station, social media outlets! We have to apply more pressure or receive an hefty bill ! We need to document a visit with our local dealer about this concern as well. We are the consumers, We demand that Toyota address the issue or face the consequences of losing sales, brand attraction, and etc.

I just had this happen with my 2019 RAV4 Limited Hybrid. Got a notification: “A malfunction in the hybrid system has been detected”. Made appointment right away but had to have vehicle TOWED to the dealer because it was totally inoperable on the morning of the appointment. The estimated cost to repair it: $5269.75. I have +51k miles but vehicle is less than 3 years old. Dealer indicated that this is not covered under the hybrid warranty but only under the general 36k warranty. So if this is a design issue and takes about 3-4 years to show up, my guess is that there will be a surge of new cases on the horizon. At least for corrosion prone areas. I live in the northeast where they make the roads with 25% asphalt and 75% salt. No hybrid or prime 4 me. They are fun to drive though. I’m a “buy a car and make it last 12-15 years kind of person though”, Buying a gas model that I can service myself and will not need to inspect as many major electrical systems. That’s a pricey wire and while I love the brand, fighting any of them over warranty work and parts is a terrible experience.

Does the 2023 Rav 4 Hybrid also have this problem? I heard that Toyota Canada issued a recall for the high voltage cable in certain Rav4 Hybrid models on August 24th, 2021. The recall was issued due to the risk of corrosion on the high voltage cable, which could cause electrical resistance, overheating, and potentially a fire hazard. Toyota Canada advised owners to contact their local dealership to schedule an inspection and any necessary repairs or replacements.

My wife has a 2019 Rav4 Hybrid limited with 95000 miles on it. We're in New England, so lots of salt exposure in the winter. Will check today and see how it looks. My plan is to coat the cable with B'laster Surface Shield which is a lot like Fluid Film, but it doesn't get washed out so easily. If I lay it on thick enough, it should make its way into the orange cover and coat the braided copper.

2023 model here. I disconnected my connector day 2 of ownership and applied more dielectric grease to the inner grommet, reconnected it, then sprayed the area with Fluid Film. Our hybrid has the foam gasket addition so I count myself lucky in that regards. 13 months later in southern Ontario my cable still looks new. Why people worry about voiding their warranty is crazy. I'd rather not need my warranty! Toyota states to not spray rust inhibitor on a hybrid vehicle. Of course they will tell you that. They want to sell you another car in 8 years time.

Their fix should help keep the crap out of the connector, but I still don't understand how that crap get to rust through the insulation of the wires. Is the insulation drying and breaking so the copper can rust? This connecter should be able to handle being under water and should be fully corrosion resistant...

@@jamesmcgregor9491 I'm in Ontario and I harassed Toyota Canada every week and got the same story every time with no ETA. Out of nowhere, 3 days after my last call to Toyota, the Dealer calls and says my vehicle is ready. It was under warranty so I did have a rental for the entire time and I insisted the vehicle be stored inside and they check the brakes after it sat for so long for rotor warp and rusting. The Dealer did as I asked and ended up replacing the brakes as well. As a side note, the gas tank was replaced under a recall because of the partial filling problem. That took the better part of a year.

My understanding is that it is a design flaw with the cable assembly (that orange cover over the connector). As such, it should affect all RAV4 regardless of where they were manufactured or assembled. Having said that, if you are just getting one now, you very likely have the new redesigned version. I got to see pictures of the new design. In my opinion, it looks like the old design with a cut out part to allow airflow and water to leave the assembly when it got wet. Time will tell if that’s the final solution.

A few people have told me off the record that the real fix will be in the redesign coming in 2025/2026. If they could relocate that cable that would certainly go a long way. Christine, Toyota may offer you to sign a non disclosure agreement in exchange for a rebate (it’s the classic technique of overcharging and then buying silence) - be ware of the consequences… if another problem come up, you’ve « signed out » your way into another request for a legitimate problem. I don’t know in what state you are but in Quebec we have a law that protects consumers and Toyota had to let it go for anyone that brought in a lawyer. So a big lawyer bill may be lower than an overcharged HV cable…

I agree with everything except the dealer as the best route concept. They all with NO exceptions are crooks, and I am saying this as someone who spent nearly 20 years in the field investigating their misdeeds. I have a '21 Rav4 Hybrid living its life in the US Northwest with full blown winters. After having the car for over a year, I opened the connector (yes, disconnected high voltage battery first!), and saw no signs of corrosion. Nevertheless, I applied silicone grease. Now - a couple of years later - I am planning to do another inspection. I also read that this problem affects US and Canadian models while mine is made in Japan and allegedly is not affected. I also read that Toyota was forced to include this cable in general hybrid system warranty in Canada and class action suit is crawling through the US [in]justice system to make Toyota do the same in the US. Unfortunately, we are dealing with Toyota of America, not Toyota, and its modus operandi is consistent with "normal" US corporate mafia's.

I doubt the Toyota decision makers are reading KZbin threads but if they are, brand loyalty comes from many many years of being well-known for something. If that is quality / reliability and there becomes a frequency of design issues that you are passing off to your customers, you really cost your company their tie into customers. If I want tech, I'd buy a Tesla. If I want quality/reliability I buy a Toyota. Get it? Even worst, when someone feels fooled from their own beliefs supporting a brand for decades, there is little that can be done to reverse it. Don't believe me? As our friends over at Anheuser-Busch how to fix a brand issue... Toyota, FIX THIS WIRE and end the issue. This is not minor and to even hear that people were paying for this repair themselves makes Toyota look like Ford.

@@BobPellerin Which is too bad. That leaves the 2019 to 2024 with a defective design. I've considered a 2024 to replace my Prius v with the bad EGR design (clogging with carbon, leading to blown head gaskets, unless the EGR system is cleaned out before full clogging). But I live in upstate NY where salt is readily used in winter. I don't see the "redesigned" cable, which is almost identical to the original design, lasting 10 years like I typically keep my vehicles. Since the cable is not covered in the hybrid warranty for the 2023 & 2024, a $6k repair outside warranty will exceed any and all gas savings with the hybrid. While Toyota cannot fix the cable location now, they need to redesign it with more corrosion resistant materials or better shielding to better protect it from the elements.

@@vandeda I've seen pictures of the 2024 cable and it was from a model built in February. The cable has now added what looks like heat shrink over the braided ground sheathing. It retained the other changes over the years like the drilled holes in the black plastic cover, the orange connector cover cut, and the foam gasket at the interface. I would say the 2024 might have actually corrected the problem and time will tell. Considering what the warranty costs are I would think Toyota would have addressed this faster.

Hi Bob, the part number you mention (821H10R011) does not fit the RAV4 models that have a VIN starting with the letter J. So, it appears that this replacement part does not fit my 2021 Prime. Did you ever get any validation from Toyota whether this is affecting the 2021 Primes?

Most of the information I got was from people that reported the problem with pictures as documentation. There is a class action suit. I was told the Prime and the equivalent Lexus models all also had the problem. You can send the question to the facebook group “towards a recall RAV4 hybrid”

I have a 2020 Rav4 Hybrid XSE, and the day we were to leave on our vacation the car had a Hybrid Malfunction warning. Took it to the dealer, and it was the corroded High Voltage Cable. Thankfully we had hears about this problem a few months earlier and had the check it and it started to corrode. But we were told Toyota would not replace it unless it was completely gone. They noted it, and because of that they said that the warranty would cover it. I'm so glad we do not have to pay for the replacement, BUT the part is not available right now and it could be up to 6 months before my car is drivable.

What part of the country are you in? Is it somewhere where a lot of salt is used for snow?
