Thank you for sharing this video sir, I am an owner of a 2020 Toyota RAV4 hybrid, I must say I really like the vehicle. This video is very helpful as I was avoiding all hybrids originally for years due to a possible concern such as the present concern. I will be making an appointment to have the component in question inspected by my local Toyota dealer/technician. This is extremely disappointing that Toyota has been aware of this issue since 2020 ,has failed to address the issue of an integral part that corrodes! The good thing about this is the RAV4 is an extremely big seller in the Toyota lineup and if we could get all owners to join together we could provide the voice needed to provide the power to pressure Toyota to do the right thing. Toyota needs to address this issue immediately! I urge all Toyota owners that have this integral part that could possibly corrodes to start drafting letters over to your local dealers, Toyota CEO, and the local news station, social media outlets! We have to apply more pressure or receive an hefty bill ! We need to document a visit with our local dealer about this concern as well. We are the consumers, We demand that Toyota address the issue or face the consequences of losing sales, brand attraction, and etc.

So if this is a design issue and takes about 3-4 years to show up, my guess is that there will be a surge of new cases on the horizon. At least for corrosion prone areas. I live in the northeast where they make the roads with 25% asphalt and 75% salt. No hybrid or prime 4 me. They are fun to drive though. I’m a “buy a car and make it last 12-15 years kind of person though”, Buying a gas model that I can service myself and will not need to inspect as many major electrical systems. That’s a pricey wire and while I love the brand, fighting any of them over warranty work and parts is a terrible experience.

Does the 2023 Rav 4 Hybrid also have this problem? I heard that Toyota Canada issued a recall for the high voltage cable in certain Rav4 Hybrid models on August 24th, 2021. The recall was issued due to the risk of corrosion on the high voltage cable, which could cause electrical resistance, overheating, and potentially a fire hazard. Toyota Canada advised owners to contact their local dealership to schedule an inspection and any necessary repairs or replacements.

2023 model here. I disconnected my connector day 2 of ownership and applied more dielectric grease to the inner grommet, reconnected it, then sprayed the area with Fluid Film. does 2024 rav4 hybrid still have same problem?
@BobPellerin4 ай бұрын
From everything I have seen, I would say yes. They redesigned it a few times, but it still looks like it will fail to me. I don’t claim to be an automotive engineer or expert and only time will confirm me right or wrong. A few people have told me off the record that the real fix will be in the redesign coming in 2025/2026. If they could relocate that cable that would certainly go a long way. Please note that this problem is mainly where they use salt/abrasives on the roads.

Hi Bob, I have a toyota rav4 hybrid 2019 and this is exactly what I have been dealing with right now. Lia toyota charged me 4k to replace this and it is an absurd amount and I have not give in yet to that price. You are so right about this video everything that you said about "when" it will corrodes. Car is just 3 yrs old brand new car I bought from back then and it's still in low mileage. My car right now won't even move and errors are everywhere in the dashboard even if it's turn on and I don't know what to do right now I don't have a functioning car. What do you think I should do? Christine, Toyota may offer you to sign a non disclosure agreement in exchange for a rebate (it’s the classic technique of overcharging and then buying silence) - be ware of the consequences… if another problem come up, you’ve « signed out » your way into another request for a legitimate problem. I don’t know in what state you are but in Quebec we have a law that protects consumers and Toyota had to let it go for anyone that brought in a lawyer. So a big lawyer bill may be lower than an overcharged HV cable…

You may want to consider a spray that is not conductive....... Something like Krown rust inhibitor, no solvents, not parrafin (wax), can be used on electrics but not on the inside of the actual connector but on all the metal parts on the outside, metal housing and braid like wires that are inside the plastic. For inside the connector itself, some dialectric grease probably.

I agree with everything except the dealer as the best route concept. They all with NO exceptions are crooks, and I am saying this as someone who spent nearly 20 years in the field investigating their misdeeds. I have a '21 Rav4 Hybrid living its life in the US Northwest with full blown winters. After having the car for over a year, I opened the connector (yes, disconnected high voltage battery first!), and saw no signs of corrosion. Nevertheless, I applied silicone grease. Now - a couple of years later - I am planning to do another inspection. I also read that this problem affects US and Canadian models while mine is made in Japan and allegedly is not affected. I also read that Toyota was forced to include this cable in general hybrid system warranty in Canada and class action suit is crawling through the US [in]justice system to make Toyota do the same in the US. Unfortunately, we are dealing with Toyota of America, not Toyota, and its modus operandi is consistent with "normal" US corporate mafia's.

I doubt the Toyota decision makers are reading KZbin threads but if they are, brand loyalty comes from many many years of being well-known for something. If that is quality / reliability and there becomes a frequency of design issues that you are passing off to your customers, you really cost your company their tie into customers. If I want tech, I'd buy a Tesla. If I want quality/reliability I buy a Toyota. Get it? Even worst, when someone feels fooled from their own beliefs supporting a brand for decades, there is little that can be done to reverse it. Don't believe me? As our friends over at Anheuser-Busch how to fix a brand issue... Toyota, FIX THIS WIRE and end the issue. This is not minor and to even hear that people were paying for this repair themselves makes Toyota look like Ford.

@@BobPellerin Which is too bad. That leaves the 2019 to 2024 with a defective design. I've considered a 2024 to replace my Prius v with the bad EGR design (clogging with carbon, leading to blown head gaskets, unless the EGR system is cleaned out before full clogging). But I live in upstate NY where salt is readily used in winter. I don't see the "redesigned" cable, which is almost identical to the original design, lasting 10 years like I typically keep my vehicles. Since the cable is not covered in the hybrid warranty for the 2023 & 2024, a $6k repair outside warranty will exceed any and all gas savings with the hybrid. While Toyota cannot fix the cable location now, they need to redesign it with more corrosion resistant materials or better shielding to better protect it from the elements.
@waynebinky6 ай бұрын
@@vandeda I've seen pictures of the 2024 cable and it was from a model built in February. The cable has now added what looks like heat shrink over the braided ground sheathing. It retained the other changes over the years like the drilled holes in the black plastic cover, the orange connector cover cut, and the foam gasket at the interface. I would say the 2024 might have actually corrected the problem and time will tell. Considering what the warranty costs are I would think Toyota would have addressed this faster.
