We live in Mississippi and there is NOTHING here. Except for a 2022 fully loaded Ford Escape PHEV that I stumbled upon at Mac Haik Ford in Jackson, MS, USA, that the sale's people didn't even seem to know was on the lot. I'm still holding out hope for the 2023 models and hoping for more options.

In Canad, Kia got caught red handed with creating an artificial shortage, by stockpiling new cars in huge parking lots. This way, they scratch the dealers' back who can then rip off their customers. IT's a disgusting game.

Thanks for your videos; I've been watching them for months now as I look at a hybrid or PHEV SUV for our new family car. I checked out a Kia Sportage last week and put a deposit on the PHEV SX. Here in Toronto, the wait time is expected to be about 8 months. With a 3+ year wait time for the Toyota RAV4 Prime, and nearly $10k more for similar features, the Kia Sportage PHEV is the winner for me. I like the heat pump and spare tire on the PRIME, but as you said in the video, it really comes down to the one you can get in a reasonable time.

Excellent review! I was on six waiting lists for my Prime XLE, which I got in December at MSRP, and $8500 in incentives. Timing was just right. 11,000 miles, 60 gallons of gas. Love my Prime! Heat pump is a big plus, as we have lived in northern Ontario, and Western New York…

Hi Guys great and practical reviews! My daughter just got her RAV4 prime 2024 XLE and as it’s parked next to my wife’s Kia Sportage PHEV 2023 I can’t help but compare and yes you are right with the “ Bank of Toyota “ however here in Quebec the RAV4 was 58,000$ plus 800$ for paint ( two tone red/black ) before a 10,000$ rebate and the Kia was 48500$ before a 7500$ rebate. The Kia EX Premium comes with driver memory seats,passenger fully powered seat full panoramic moon roof and full leatherette seats! Rav comes with small standard moon roof no memory seats and no passager power seat also no rear heated seats but roughly 10,000$ more than the Kia! So the question is “ is it worth 10000$ to buy the Bank of Toyota ? “ Having both in my garage and having driven both I will stick for my wife with Kia!!!

We have a Sportage X-Line Prestige on order in the U.S. The Rav4 does have superior electric range, gas mileage, resale, and Toyota reputation BUT...the Sportage interior, features, and space are superior to the Rav. The heat pump and 8 miles less of electric range don't matter much to us here in Texas. We'll drive locally on electric 95% of the time so we don't mind the engine running a little more, otherwise our gas might get old. Plus the Rav4 design is old, tired, and hardly updated at all over the last 5 years. Also the Sportage has real all wheel drive(this is reason for most of the hit in mpg's) while the Rav has the less powerful, disconnected rear electric system. We have a 2017 Kia Niro and it has been rock solid so far.

Exactly the conclusion I came to in getting my HEV EX. I know the RAV4 is probably the better car, but I just don't like it. Liking mine a lot so far, the PHEV should be even nicer.

I put a deposit down on both of these and I’ll go with whichever comes in first. As much as I love the Kia value, tech, and and interior, I’m still hoping the Rav4 arrives first. It gets cold here in the winter and that heat pump is going to make a big difference.

The Kia is the value buy, but the Toyota is the one to own long term. Toyota's Hybrid system is over 20 years old now. It's bulletproof and provides real world efficiency. There's a reason the Kia has so much for such a low price. You won't notice why today, but you will after 5 years.

Good looking is all what matters in cars these days so it seems. Bling and tech. The more, the more that can break. But take the car you like the most. Taste is different for everyone. I tested the KIA and I didn't like it. I don't like the shape and interior. Also the KIA Sportage in EU is much smaller then the CA/US version. I ordered the RAV4 Prime XSE + XSE package (Style in Belgium) last month. With the new Digital cluster and new infotainment system, the interior looks so much better. Waiting time here in Belgium is 7 months. Great comparison review! Keep up the good work!

For what it's worth, I have a 2011 KIA Sorento that I purchased new and approaching 12 years later it has almost 260K miles. And I have never had any issues out of it and would buy another KIA in a heartbeat. One of the best material investments I have ever made in my adult life.

One thing to consider with the Toyota versus the Kia is the engine choice. Kia offers a turbo, Toyota offers a naturally aspirated engine. Long term say 10 to 15 years down the road, the turbo may require expensive repair. After having owned a 2013 Hyundai Sonata with engine bearing failures and oil consumption issues I vote for the Toyota. whereas the Toyota may require little of any additional money spent on maintenance.

A local Toyota dealer just informed me that they have the new Rav4 Prime come in. When I look at the price tag, there is a Dealer Adjustment for $10,000! Making it over $60K USD for a Rav4. Precisely, it's $60,260. I am sure some desperate people would pay for it, and the dealers are taking advantage of it. With tax, you are looking at almost $65,000 out of your pocket for a Rav4. It's ridiculous.

Hey, thank you for the great review! No JD scores this time, nor what prices are retained. I usually look at these in your reviews, but I guess with the Kia being very new and both being very rate it's hard to tell if the numbers are real. Kia with a turbo engine and an automatic, I'd go to the Toyota with naturally aspirated and the eCVT. Kia's turbo is basically a consumable, needing a change every 100k-150k km, if all of them are on petrol that is. The Toyota on the other hand, is probably going to last a lot more. In Europe, Toyota have announced a 10 year warranty for all of their vehicles including the whole hybrid system. That makes it an ever more reasonable choice. Sadly, again in Europe, the Sportage is smaller than what you guys get in North America, which is a shame.

I have a RAV4 plug in and the warranty on the hybrid system is 15 year's or 150.000 miles which is one of the reasons I went for the RAV4 and trust me it's a lovely car to drive and own

It's also worth mentioning price wise in the US the Toyota dealers seem to be more willing to add on "market surcharges" my Sportage phev should arrive in the middle of November for MSRP, the local dealer wanted 10 grand over MSRP for the prime... The only advantage the prime has for me is it accelerates faster, but I think I'll live 😂

Based on this video and how I buy and drive it would be the KIA. Why? I never buy a vehicle with any expectation of resell or trade-in because I simply put too many miles on my cars averaging 250K for my last three vehicles. I like the Toyota brand and have owned a Camery that I loved, but I also love y current KIA Sorento and would buy another one in a heartbeat. That said, my current leaders are 1st the Hyundai Santa Fe PHEV, unfortunately they at still selling the2022 model and not the 2023 and 2nd the Ford Escape PHEV. Following a previous from Motormouth I waited 13 months and got my Sportage PHEV SX white color here in Quebec July 5th :there’s no doubt it’s way better over the Prime in terms, of design, beauty, tech, interior, full moon roof, etc, etc,etc. I love it. Having an heat pump would be nice BUT it is far from being a deal breaker… an heat pump does not heat like a radiator when the temperature is very low… also when the gaz motor starts to generate heat the motor runs idle while the car is moved solely but the ev motor if u still have electricity left in the battery, after it runs hybrid… thus while on EV power, and idle motor is so cheap in gaz… idk maybe 2 litres/km so not worth caring about especially if u,d choose to pay a surcharge ove msrp to get it…. Which I didn’t for my Sportage…

We have a 2022 RAV 4 Prime SE now with nearly 10,000 miles. 45+ MPG (US gallons) in pure hybrid mode with a depleted battery, and 45-50 miles in pure electric. Toyota is easier to maintain and there is more Toyota Dealerships than Kia. I don't believe that Kia can match those figures. Also down here in the states buying new a RAV 4 Prime at MSRP is pretty close to impossible. If you want one now expect to pay over $50,000 U.S. dollars with a minimum of $5 thousand to $10+ Thousand over MSRP.

Something that should really be touched on in these videos is REAL-WORLD fuel economy. The Rav-4 is rated for a worse fuel economy than owners will generally have, and the Sportage is rated for much better economy than owners will generally have. My family owns a 2020 Rav-4 Hybrid rated for 40mpg combined. No matter how it is driven, the car has yet to average below 45mpg. We also own a 2023 Sportage hybrid which is rated for 38mpg combined. It is absolutely babied when driven, yet we can’t average more than 31mpg. If you watch other “real-world” test videos or read reviews on car forums, you will see very similar stories. Nobody is averaging close to the 38mpg the Sportage is rated for, yet almost everyone is far exceeding the 40mpg the Rav-4 is rated for. The Hyundai Tucson HEV and PHEV are even worse from what I’ve seen. Kia and Hyundai have a long way to go with their hybrid systems to compete with the fuel economy you get from Toyota. If you find an honest tech at a Kia dealership, they will also support the claim that fuel economy is the number one complaint they’ve been getting from owners of their new hybrid.

My goodness thank you for this. It's astonishing how many reviews of these and other PHEVs (this vid is better than most) don't get into this in any detail, much less provide any kind of 'real world' testing of the manufacturer's specs/claims. Maybe these journalists' 'test window' is too short? Or that such actual testing/research would require too much work that wouldn't translate into more KZbin/social media engagement? If actual mileage--including how well the larger plug-in EV batt factors into that (how often does ICE engine come on, etc.)-- isn't as important to you as piano black and heated seats, etc., then why on earth are you considering a PHEV in the first place--particularly ones that are more unicorns than real and that you'll pay a hefty premium for??? If you don't particularly care about mileage/EV usage, forget about these PHEVs and find yourself a solid HEV that is available and reasonably priced. Relatedly, all the "heat pump versus no heat pump" talk/comments mean little when there aren't some real-world user cases, facts, etc., documenting how well heat pumps work/impact mpg and EV range compared to not having them.

This year both my mom and dad are turning 65 years of age. Additionally, both are going into retirement and they celebrate 40 years of marriage. So my sister, brother and me decided to buy them a new car, an SUV, their lower back is not what it used to be and they have issues when they need to enter very low vehicles. We keep circling over three different models: Rav4 Prime (we already have 3 Toyotas in our family and we absolutely adore them), Kia Sportage PHEV and Hyundai Tucson 2025. And we just can't make up our minds. We know that Toyota is the priciest one of all, but there's a 100 year old tradition behind Toyota and have such good experiences with Toyota it's very difficult to move away. However, both Tucson and Sportage look amazing, the only thing I personally don't like on a Sportage is the weird shifter. We also like the fact that Rav4 has the best EV range, our parents usually commute up to 100 km per day, so these 70 km would fit in perfectly. But the differences between the models are so minute, it's really tough to choose. I adore the new Tucson 2025, I think it's a gorgeous car, both inside and outside, with great features and such a well designed infotainment software. Any thoughts? Something that would help us choose?

I’ve had a Toyota sienna limited for 8 years now and never had a spare tire. I did get a puncture fast one once but was near home and then just stuck a winter rim on and then drove to the dealer. It’s no biggie

Shopping both right now. Availability has improved a bit but can still be challenging to get EXACTLY what you want. I'm really liking the KIA a lot but I'm worried about long term reliability. I keep my cars past 150k miles and 12+ years. The lack of an actual spare is bothersome too.

My Mom's neighbour ordered one and he was told by the dealership in White Rock, 8 moths. Not sure if that has changed or not. Kia brought this PHEV into the press fleet for journalists to drive which is why we have it.

We agree on everything that has been said: Rav4 has the reputation of the brand, but it has become outdated in line, instrumentation, technology, etc... The interior of the Prime has been updated a bit since it was released, the infotainment is larger among other things. Personally, im not impressed with it but im totally fine with it. I dont see the sportage interior as an improvement over the rav4 personally and i prefer the rav4 exterior

Seems to me you would go with the RAV4 if you keep your cars until they won't go any more and the Sportage if you trade in after a few years. Most likely the Toyota will be the more reliable, durable vehicle long term.

Why do so many comments make it seem like the heat pump is such a deal breaker? They act like tge Kia has no heater. In the end, running the engine for heat won't cost much in fuel. I wonder what range the RAV 4 gets while running the heat pump, probably much closer to the Kia. Why pretend two or three gallons of gas is such a big deal?

An advantage for the Toyota Prime is the towing capacity of 2,500 lbs rather than 1,650 lbs for the Kia. This is the main reason why I've been waiting for mine for 1.5 years.

As I run a heat pump at home on Canada I know they have limitations and I can't think that car ones are substantially better than what I have. I think too much is being made for the necessity of a heat pump IMO. There so little research out there vehicle wise.

Hey! Thank you for the great review I would go for the Sportage. In my opinion it's a better car for the money. Regarding the biggest running cost,in the current market environment, we cannot talk about depreciation. The new car prices going up, and this also pull the used car prices. I don't know what is the market situation in Canada or in the US, but here in Hungary, the car market is suffering. Another point is that the Chinese car manufacturers like MG and BYD is starting to flood the European market with their cars. Maybe history repeats itself, see US oil crisis in the 70s, which pumped up the Japanese car import?

Toyota’s brand name equating to reliability will trump Kia’s brand name any day of the week. RAV4s are beloved SUVs, everybody I know who has one RAVES about them. That and the added EV range over the Sportage is why I think the RAV4 will be the winner but as you guys mentioned, it’s more about which car is more readily available to consumers.

I think the use of the heat pump is overated on vehicules with 60-70 km of pure electric. Probably not more than 40k in winter. After that, the engine will start and the advantage is reduce to zero. It's more important on a 100% electric vehicule.

Toyota is a Win if you are not much into Interior design. They were first one to launch Hybrids so their systems are much more trustworthy than anything else in Market. I live in a colder place so Heat pump would have been good but anyways , I wanna feel happy when I am driving and accessing the features of Kia than crying over it while driving RAV4 😅, also the hybrid system is great too in KIA. Its probably gonna take years for Toyota to build nice interior Until then ... KIA/Hyundai.

They now make more profit per vehicle than ever before as they don’t have to offer incentives . The real reason cars are not flooding dealerships is they all know this. Why stock a yard full of cars then discount them to move them?

FYI: there are plug-in hybrids with more all electric range than a sportage or a rav4 prime. They’re just sedans rather than crossovers. The Honda Clarity and Chevy Volt and new Prius prime can go longer for instance. They’re just not crossovers.

For the 2023 Rav4 Prime in the US, Toyota is installing the 6.6 kW charger in all trims, even the base SE, thank God! Charging that 18 kw-hr battery on a 3 kW L2 charger took almost 6 hours. In the debate on which PHEV is "best", it's hard to ignore the fact that the Toyota Hybrid Synergy Drive has been around since 1997. The inner components of the P-810 transaxle in the Rav 4 Prime, and the primary power inverter/converter, are all descended from the original 1997 Prius, one of the most thoroughly de-bugged and reliable car designs ever. The HSD transmission has no bands, no clutch packs, and the infinitely variable "gear ratio" between the engine and final drive differential is handled by a planetary gear set and electric motor instead of the far more complex multiple gear sets and hydraulic actuators that the Kia Sportage transmission uses. The Toyota uses a naturally-aspirated Atkinson cycle engine vs a turbocharged engine in the Kia: that turbocharger adds complexity and hurts fuel economy.

The heat pump won't work well in temps below freezing and gobbles up battery power, which forces the gas engine to run more often. Do some research. This is one of the main complaints on the Prime in cold climates.

The (spam) email I get from my Toyota dealer says Rav4 Prime is 4+ year wait time in British Columbia. Might as well not even be a consideration! My Camry hybrid was a 5 month wait earlier this year, I love it, but a heat pump would make a difference in how much the engine runs now that it's getting cooler out

I know it's not apples to apples but I decided on a deposit in a Santa Fe. While the lack of heat pump is not ideal, I hear that it breaks down to about 1L/hour of fuel to heat. Anyone have any opinions or feedback on actual real world fuel economy of the Santa Fe or Sorento in Canadian winter environments?

RAV4 here... But I'm one of the rare ones to be lucky to have a NX450h+. The Toyota is much more solid and with proven reliability. The heat pump is important in Canada. You also need to compare the 2023 RAV with the new Toyota multimedia system and the dash. It will make it a bit more modern.

If Kia has a better dealer network in B.C, Sportage should be the default choice in this comparison. Even Hyundai has much superior dealer network with better after sales service. Although Prime has an outdated interior, Toyota has a proven dealer network and long-term reliability. In fact, there are outside garages willing to deal with Toyota PHEV. Its just a piece-of-cake for regular Toyota hybrid, when it comes to ease of maintenance and parts costs. Head goes to RAV4 and heart goes to Sportage.

The whole length of time I would own these cars I would cringe seeing the old style dash of the RAV4. For the cost savings and excellant features I would go the KIA SPORTAGE Im going car shopoing this weekend so will drive them all to be sure. Outlander, Rav4 and the Kia sportage. Im sure I will end up with KIA trading in my Mercedes 2022 EQB350

EV owners tip. In BC electricity is half price after 600 PM to 600 AM. Grins...... Thats about the time our 2022 Santa Fe PHEV comes home from work 6 days a week. We get 130 MPG average as well, as the usual trip is 40 kilometres... Our interior is so superior to Toyota product as well...

Sorry but I’m not paying $75,000 for a RAV4 Prime. I did however, enjoy everything about the RAV4 except the engine when I drove an XLE 2.5L model, which I found underpowered and loud when under acceleration. Unfortunately Zack’s also used the word “loud” here in the Prime too..

Are the seats in the Prime better than the seats in other Rav4's, because I'm not impressed with those, but the comfort of most Kia cars is usually very good! I would rather pay less for the nicer Sportage, get more features, and be happy with the great fuel mileage. It's not all about having the longest EV range, and never using the gas engine until it rusts. Might as well get an EV instead of the Prime if commute exceeds 50km.

Thanks for the great review guys ! We’ve been waiting over a year now for a 2022 R4P that we put a deposit on but thinking it will probably be a 2023 model when it eventually arrives. We’ve only owned Honda’s for over 30 years but because of Honda ‘s lack of electrified vehicles we’ve decided to switch to Toyota. I figure if I was going to leave Honda after all these years and they all have been rock solid vehicles it wasn’t going to be for a Korean brand. I’m sure that Kia are making great vehicles now but this will probably be our last vehicle (both retired) and Toyota’s reliability means a lot to us. I thought about checking out the new 2023 Outlander PHEV and am actually fourth on the list at our dealer but was really disappointed when I read it only had 9L/100km mileage when it’s in hybrid mode and it has no spare tire so I crossed that one off my list. Meanwhile during the long wait for our R4P we’re driving our little 2020 Honda Civic Touring and it’s a great ride and we’re not suffering. Just waiting to hear when the 2023’s will start to arrive and how much of a price increase. We’re really looking forward to the day we get the call that our R4P has arrived…it will be like Christmas 😊

Thank you, glad you enjoyed the review and Congratulations on your new RAV4 Prime, that will be a nice Christmas present. As far as I understand, Mitsubishi has not released the hybrid fuel economy for the Outlander PHEV, 9L/100 km doesn't sound right.

Thanks Andrea, here is 2023 Outlander PHEV review I read. Specs and Numbers We had the opportunity to chat with Mitsubishi’s chief engineer in charge of the Outlander PHEV, Kentaro Honda, who insisted on the fact that the company will not share its plug-in hybrid technology with the Nissan Rogue, even though the two SUVs are built on the same platform. Nissan is instead using a regular hybrid system called e-Power. With battery capacity increasing from 13.8 kWh to 20 kWh, maximum EV range is now rated at 61 km. And when the battery runs empty, combined fuel economy is approximately 9 L/100 km. Honestly, these numbers aren’t very impressive. Remember, Mitsubishi previously hinted at a zero-emission range of more than 80 km. By comparison, the RAV4 Prime (18.1 kWh) can travel up to 68 km running on electrons and then achieve 6 L/100 km in hybrid operation.

Great review folks. Toyota depreciation better than KiA so the RAV will hold more value. I’d choose the Sportage but there’s that pesky “catching on fire” to think about.

With the tax rebate gone in the US, the Prime does not make sense anymore, because of its price. It is mechanically superior in all aspects: more EV range, better hybrid efficiency, more power and a more advanced Hybrid drivetrain. With the Prime, I am sure I can get to work and back without using gas. With the Sportage/Tucson, not when I need more power to accelerate or merge quickly. The price is just maybe ~$2K over what it should be. Personally, I'd prefer the Tucson PHEV, mostly because of the reduced price. I wish the Sportage had a trim without the sunroof and power lift gate for a reduced price.

You said it. When you are ready to sell your KIA , expect a Kia price. Kia prices their cars lower also because they are worth less due to the quality and longevity of their parts. Nobody expects to pay a used Toyota price for a used KIA.

I talked to three Toyota dealers in NM. The story here is TOYOTA WILL NOT ALLOCATE RAV4 PRIMES TO NM UNTILL LATE FIRST QUARTER 2024, IF THEN!! BAD move Toyota! CO dealers are asking at least a $5k premium and one told me $9k!. Again, TOYOTA, you're ruining your reputation! That said, the KIA Sportage PHEV is still a 4-5 month delivery in NM. I may just have to drive to AZ, CO or TX to pick one up.

Price is not that "low". In practice it is nearly 10 grand more to get in Canada. Dealer adds extra fees and you have no choice because of artificial waiting times (Kia got caught red handed). Plus they often refuse to sell the base models. Count on spending nearly 55 grand plus tax in Canada for the Sportage.

Does anyone have any thoughts about driver visibility of these two vehicles? I test drove the Rav 4 and didn't notice an issue but when I test drove the Sportage it was a bit of a challenge to see traffic when merging and looking over my left shoulder. The side pillars too wide and seemed to block driver visibility. Any thoughts? I'm wondering if it's just me because I'm rather short in height. Thank you!

Lovely pricing on the Kia, just try to find it at a lower mainland dealer at MSRP. Common tactics are having to go with expensive dealer financing to be able to buy or Competitive Price Adjustment of up to $4000. Longing for the days of the merely rip-off document fee of $700.

Availability is a mess for both of these vehicles (especially the Toyota), but I would go Kia all day long. Much more room for the driver, passengers and storage, and the interior quality simply embarrasses the RAV4 (drove one for 8 months and it was a plastic rattle-box). Neither of these cars are fun to drive but the Kia has an edge with better steering too.

Put it in this way remember this is a toyota not a kia i know of the Rav4 is more expensive but you buy a toyota reliability resale value I'm not against with kia good designs i have my 2 neighbors has a kia from optima to Sorento and Sedona all kinds of problems from the engine to electrical but they are still love kia and I'm a toyota and lexus guy 4 months when I bought my 2022 venza hybrid limited when I back up to my garage he heard the sound when i back up he asked me what is the sound i told him it's normal i don't know he believe me or not thanks for sharing your video take care bye.

As usual, Toyota has the incredible reliability but frumpy interior and tried and true but dated technology , while Hyundai and kia have better features, better looks, updated technology, and a better price. But the reliability of Kja and Hyundai is a question mark. But. I always wonder why Hyundai and Kia seem to change their exterior every year.

Kia will be doing fine with its resale value, that’s why I have no doubt I can sell my Sorento PHEV Prestige top trim here in the US for top dollars whenever I feel like selling it (which I think it’s gonna be a long time down the road cause’ I like it so much 😊)

Definitely the RAV4 due to it’s better reliability and resale value. The 2023 Kia Sportage may be one of the best SUVs in its class but not even that has prevented it from being embroiled in a new recall in the United States. The car manufacturer has revealed in a recall notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) that the B+ terminal on the battery may not have been properly torqued by the supplier during assembly. If this is the case, the nut can loosen over time and could cause the engine to stall while driving. A total of 19,701 Kia Sportage models are embroiled in the recall, all of which were manufactured between January 12, 2022, and August 8, 2022.
