Drain fluid, remove trans filter, remove most of the valve body bolts. LEAVE THE 3 REAR BOLTS IN, just loosen them. Careful here, watch the video first to show which LAST bolt I removed to lower the valve body in order to access the SL2 Trans Shift Solenoid. The Servo Spring under the valve body is under pressure, pushing the body downwards. YOU CAN USE A LONGER BOLT TO LIMIT THE DROP OF THE VALVE BODY. Take your time here, it is easy, once the valve body is dropped, you can access the SL2, remove the 2 bolts and slide it out. Put some trans fluid on the seal and install it. Torque the bolts up and reverse install everything. Sorry for the grainy video, my GoPro was not working at this time.

after watching the video, we left two bolts installed but loose, opposite the SL2 solenoid. We removed all the other bolts, with the bolt next to the solenoid last. The valve body dropped enough to change out the solenoid with two loose bolts still installed. Made the swap a bit easier. Thanks for the video. Car shifts much better.

Nothing wrong with an oil bath. [ugh] You just need to order the SL2 solenoid, not the valve body. Also, the ECU/ECm was not soldered correctly from the factory, this needs to be corrected. After these 2 items are repaired/replaced. Drive the RAV for 30 mins or longer in stop and go traffic so the system can re-learn the shift patterns. Cheers! Stumpr1

I replaced the SL 2 solenoid and it did make a huge difference in the rough shift I was having on my 2002 rav4. Now I have another issue to resolve. After I drive it for a while and put it in park, it goes into high idle. Basically once the engine gets warm and I put it in park the rooms are at 1800.

If it is spring tight ? What happen it dropped down? Is it easy to put everything back together and put it back up? Right now I’m scared to drop it down and I can’t put it back up.😮 also what is behind it beside a spring ? Too bad I can’t see your video process while you doing, but I might get the idea.
@stumpr1
@stumpr1 2 ай бұрын
that spring is under pressure, pushing down. Get longer screws that match the others [size and threadwise] and install them in the forward area of the valvebody, this will limit the travel downwards of it. As you only need like a 1/2" of drop to access the valve itself. When it dropped, it startled me, as I was not expecting it. I had my hand holding the body and slowly lowering it.
@stumpr1
@stumpr1 2 ай бұрын
Long screws are the answer, take your time, remove the front screws and add in the longer ones. then slowly loosen the rest. The valvebody will slowly drop down. Remember you only need a little space to clear that SL2. That spring, not sure, guess that it applies a clutch. I lost so much video on my GoPro which had everything, so I just posted this grainy video.

So basically when you bought the used SL2 solenoid, you didn't have to check the resistance in it to be sure it meets recommended specs? I have read that the resistance in the SL2 should be 5 to 5.6 Ohms (that close range). Mine is 7 Ohms and i experience 2nd to 3rd jerks just as you experienced. I don't know if such a slight difference in resistance could cause my shifting issues. Not easy to get the SL2 solenoid in my location 😒 so I want to know if anyone has ever confirmed the resistance in SL2 solenoid before swapping it?
@stumpr1
@stumpr1 8 ай бұрын
Bought a New, unused SL2, in the package. Not a Toyota one which is priced at an insane amount. I did not have the meter to check these items. After reading on variuos Toyota Forums, everything pointed to these 2 bad areas. The ECU/ECM factory solder was faulty and the SL2 solenoid. I replaced the SL2 and had the ECU re-soldered. After that the RAV4 performed great. Shifting was right back to normal over the next 30k. A total win win on my part. Read a few Forums, but I'm pretty sure there are people who tested these and found them to be faulty. RAV4 has been lost to an accident. Stumpr1

@@stumpr1 Thanks for the replies. Sorry about the Rav4. I have already got my ECM re-soldered. I don't have any DTC codes. I really suspect the SL2 as the culprit. When tested with the battery, the valve moves pretty well and makes the clicking sound as suggested by many. The only difference is the slight increase in resistance from the normal range.

@@juliustay2541 I don't recall offhand if I had any codes, I changed the valve just by reading some service bulletins from Toyota with regards to everything that was going on with the trans shift issue. After changing the SL2, start and drive the vehicle for 30mins or more, in stop and start traffic. This way the solenoid re-learns it's shifting patterns. Thru the ECU, there are a few pages of notes on the AFTER install/repair. And one of them is drive the RAV. Re-learn it's shifts.

I switched out 2 solenoids after solenoid stuck on or off code. I tested them with a 9 v battery and alligator clips. No click. Nothing happened. So im saying they were bad. I just decided to install the new ones I ordered. After putting everything back I refilled transmission fluid then tried to Reverse and nothing moves. Accelerate in Drive and the car doesn't move forward. Have you seen this before... One KZbin comment that stood out was that this lady hired a mechanic to work on her car and this happened. She returned the car. A response to that comment said its an easy fix... That the shift solenoid has to be in the same position it was in before removing..... That's all i got.. All solenoids are bolted down so i dont what that means. Symptoms were cold engine shifting with some tension 1 through 4 then in under 5 minutes it wouldn't shift passed 2nd. High revs and whiny if i tried

Hey stumpr1, I have 2002 Toyota RAV4 and I has wondering if it is normal for it to hold its rpm at around 3k for a while and than shift. Is it because the transmission is not up to operating temp? It only happens in the winter. Thanks
@stumpr1
@stumpr1 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is a normal condition, when the engine coolant is not up to operating temp [or close to it] The Temp sensor tells the ECU that the engine is cold and it will HOLD the trans in 3rd gear to keep the engine operating at that higher rpm to warm things up quicker. Also, this is better for less emmsions out the tailpipe. Gettting the engine to operating temps faster, lowers emmissions, less hyrdrocarbs out the tailpipe. Cheers! Stumpr1

I haven't tested the solenoid yet, but there is another "Line pressure control solenoid". Do you think this could be the source of the error code or could it be the SL1 solenoid? Hey, I have not ran into that one before, but I do remember reading [a little] something about it, just not to sure what would cause it. I would do more reading on this before doing anything, what's the RAV4 forums saying about this? Is there a majority leaning towards one thing or another? BEFORE changing fluid, dropping the pan, filter, gasket....etc....IF THIS WAS ME, I would buy a solenoid and have it ready to change out, if I am dropping the pan to change the fluid and filter, damn, I would change the solenoid at the same time. As you're already 3/4 of the way there. Why drop the pan twice if you do not have to?? Let me know which way you go on this, let others know as well. Cheers! Good luck, Wayne S.

sorry, late reply. I would try disconnecting the battery for a few hours, see if this resets the transmission solenoids. 4K at 100kph, yes, as there is no overdrive to bring the rpm down. As for a solenoid, try the battery disconnect first, as this might be an ECU/ECM problem.

Hi there! About to attempt this repair myself. ECU has been replaced but still having that hesitation from 2 to 3. Just wanted to be clear on your process. You dropped the pan, removed the filter, removed all but the 3 bolts on the end of the valve body opposite the SL2 solenoid. This allowed the valve body to droop down enough to fully replace the solenoid without fully removing the valve body. I assume those rear three bolts were loosened somewhat to allow the drooping of the front of the valve body? When you were performing this repair, did the valve body fall off? Or did it just pop down on you unexpectedly while staying connected? Additionally, I assume all those valve body bolts are different lengths? Did you have some sort of diagram that allowed you to know what size bolts went in what holes? Or was it obvious? Any advice appreciated! thanks for the content!
@stumpr1
@stumpr1 8 ай бұрын
you got it. drain fluid, drop pan, TAKE YOUR TIME removing valve body bolts, slow and easy, drop the body JUST ENOUGH to clear the SL2 solenoid. It is the solenoid located towards the front of the tranmission. Google search a pic of it, if U need too. wish I added that when I did the video. CORRECT< DO NOT REMOVE THE VALVE BODY, you do not need to. Be careful as there is a servo spring pressure the body down, again, take your time to slowly lower the body. I left 3 bolts in the rear area, but you can leave more in, just slowly undo them until u get clearance. Once your pan is dropped, you fully understand how far it needs to drop, say 1/4" of so....roughly.
@stumpr1
@stumpr1 8 ай бұрын
valve body did drop from the pressure of the servo spring, I was NOT expecting that. Valve body did not fall off. Some bolts are longer than other, but the short ones will not fit inot the long bolt holes. [too short]
@stumpr1
@stumpr1 8 ай бұрын
what would be great is this. Get a longer valve body bolt and put it in the FRONT are of the valve body. This would limit the drop of the body, under the weight of the spring. Or find 2 bolts and do the same. Take one short bolt out, replace with a slightlt longer one......does this make sense? I would have done that, if I knew about it before hand. The servo does have a good amount of downward pressure, but I could push it [valvebody] back up with my hand. KEEP your bolts close at hand.

Great vid, Sir :) I'm having some clutch, slip, reversing up sloping driveways. 2003 Camry. U241E. No fault codes. Trans has been flushed, pan cleaned, screen filter changed. The issue is being managed by handbrake start, reversing up incline. The slightly increased revs seem to apply that clutch pack a bit firmer? After a couple trips down the road it was still harsh but seemed to be getting better. So the third trip without turning vehicle off she went on main road and it shifted great. @stumpr1
@stumpr1 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Daniel, thanks for watching. Yes, the NEW solenoid did solve the problem. I did do the ECU re-solder first, which solved a few problems, except for the 2-3 up shift. Once I changed the SL2 out, everything has been great with the transmission! A few thousand KMS later and things are excellent! Good Luck, take your time. Cheers! Wayne S.

Hi Paul, went thru my invoices, could not find that one for the SL2. I can tell you I got it off Amazon. It did come from China and was priced around that $47.00 mark. Dealer price was crazy, about $350.00? or so. Also, our Rav4 has been driving great with the 2 changes. Stop and go city driving, highway driving, hot and very cold conditions. I am gong to see online if I can find it and post it here. Thanks for watching and commenting. Cheers! Wayne

@@stumpr1 Thanks Wayne.... my problem is a bit different...My 2001 Rav4 wont go beyond 2nd shift... the rpms keep going up but no shift into 3rd... and when I click the little OD button on the side of the shifter...nothing... I had the ECM problem about 6 years ago and had it redone... worked great until 4months ago... sent the ECM back but this time, not the cure... another question for u is why did you choose that solenoid (SL2) when there are a few others in there also?... do u think I should replace them all while I have it opened up?... liked your Flames jersey... jonesing for hockey right now!!! From Boston so u know who my team is!!! Go B's!! hahaha
@stumpr1
@stumpr1 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, 2 things come to mind. 1: SL2 NOT allowing the shift to happen-as it is stuck. 2: ECU is damaged? I would believe the SL2 is the problem though. SL2 controls the 2-3 shift. [up and down] I did not replace any others when I was in there, guess that would be your choice at that time. Would it hurt, nope, just your pocket book a little. HA! CGY FLAMES! SES light on code P0752. 2-3 shift problem, slip and or hesitation from the SL2 solenoid. ALSO, ECU needs to be re-soldered, as the factory solder was faulty. One part replaced, the other was a repair.
