Has Toyota even said how they are going to fix this issue? Is it going to be a new engine or a short block replacement? If it was me, I would want a complete new engine as that debris could still be in the used parts, more so for an engine that has already blown the main bearings.
@ECPP6 ай бұрын
I agree, it should be a complete crate unit, but insider info tells me likely only going to be a short block and maybe oil pump and the field will have to assemble. See even the qualifications will differ and quality may be inconsistent. Not a great idea, IMHO
@davinlaroche30296 ай бұрын
As an engine builder myself, I wouldn't accept anything but a long-block replacement... unless the dealer is taking the vehicle from my hands when the recall is performed. Whatever debris is floating around in the block can absolutely make it to the heads, and in the event that that happens, you'll be on the hook (and so will your truck 😄) for that repair, which is as costly as the short-block.

If they are really serious about MPG, they can just make all the Tundras with lower trim levels and still keep the 5.7 with them. In other word, make them more as work trucks so average commuters are less likely to buy them. You said the 5.7 had some issues early on...and it did, but weak valve springs arent as bad as a failled main bearing or conrod bearing. The valve springs were addressed and that was it. Removing a cylinder head isnt nearly as bad as literally tearing the front of the truck apart to remove the entire engine. I know Toyota is very very good at resolving issues but these new Tundras will be not touched with a 10 foot pole. Like you said...NEVER BUY anything all "NEW" because you will be the lab rat. I think FORD is the worst for this. The one irony is that the second gen tundra has probably got a boost in value due to its reliability with the 5.7 v8 and 6 speed transmission. If people would take time to read the official documents on the issue instead of listening to 95% of the BS info or content creators that only give the negative side of the issue with no solid facts from what they are saying. Does this recall suck?? Absolutely it does !!! Will Toyota fix it?? I assume once the correct repair method is available they will. To date this recall only affects 1% of the 102000 vehicles recalled ... That is fact in official Toyota documents available online at NHTSA . This is a voluntary recall on Toyota part . So that tells me they are willing stand behind there product and make it right!! They could be like GM with the lifter / camshaft issue they have had since 2007 and once vehicle is out of warranty customer is on the own or like Ford with camshaft phaser issues in the 5.4 v8 and 3.5 ecoboost dating back to 2006 ford had a chance to fix issue when ecoboost first came out in 2011 but continued to use the same crappy phaser design like in the 5.4 and once warranty ran out customer once again left paying. There are countless examples manufacturers leaving customer to deal with there crappy design flaws without recall or help outside of warranty periods. Is Toyota a perfect manufacturer ??? Absolutely not !!! Are that better than most on the market ?? yes ... Is Toyota reputation taking an ass kicking lately ?? YUP !!! Hopefully people can weed though the BS and make a informed decision for themselves !!!

As a Toyota owner (2023 naturally aspirated RAV4 Adventure series) and having just traded-in our 2022 Tacoma (V6, naturally aspirated) for a 2024 Hybrid Max Crown, I am now concerned about the Crown, (although made in Japan), because Toyota has dropped the ball on the Tundra and the new Tacoma with that 4cyl turbo engine is a lead ballon for Toyota. Having been "convinced" we no longer needed a pick-up, but rather a sedan, I wish we bought a gas (naturally aspirated) 2024 Camry TRD instead of a Crown. By the way, our trade-in 2022 Tacoma TRD Sport never made it to the dealer's lot, it had 5040 miles on it and was sold to someone looking for a low mileage 2022-2023. If it were not for the extreme government mandates on emissions., Automakers wouldn't have to rush. to design and implement new engines. In fact, the V8 would still be available in the Tundra if it were not for government mandates and regulations.

Toyota is cutting cost like the Big 3 putting out subpar products. Let’s see how they handle the recalls,are they going to install crate engines or have butchers at the stealerships tear down the engines and putting them back together with half the parts missing !

Haha strange times Thomas. Anything older Toyota is insanely reliable like the Toyota 4Runner, V6 Camry, Corolla, V6 Tacoma, V8 Tundra just to list a few, but oddly enough the next generation of turbo engines are needing a little massaging before reliability is hopefully back like before. BMW? Well late model 4 and 6 engines but those V8s I am not sure I will ever trust from Bavaria. The oldies are the goodies for Toyota. How are things with you as well lately? Any more car shopping?

If they had manufactured this engine in Japan instead of Alabama they would not be having these Quality control issues. you usually see these kinds of Quality control issues North American Car plants. Toyota has made reliable six cylinder Turbo engines in the past like the JZ series.
@nerdbikes38416 ай бұрын
It is not government regulations causing these modern engines to blow up. It is ego and trying to keep up with EV power and torque. The fact is, EVs offer huge power and torque and ICE cars are not able to keep up with the power except by using turbos, overstressed engines with exotic designs and materials. It is the struggle to try and keep up with raw EV power that forces the decision to go with turbos and risky engineering. You can have a massive NA 8 cylinder and still lose big time with even a moderately spec’d. eV. The new choice is simple. If you want reliable and slow, go with a V8. If you want faster, go with an EV or an overstressed, over engineered overboosted turbo engine.

But all the fanboys said Toyota has made turbos for decades, that this engine has been in the LS since 2017, that Toyota stress tests these engines for millions of miles! Just because they can make a turbo diesel doesn't mean they can make a gas turbo engine.
