Toyota Retro CRUISER - Toyota LAND CRUISER
The enduring legacy of the Toyota Land Cruiser is a tale that stretches over seventy years, earning it a revered status as the ultimate go-anywhere, do-anything sport utility vehicle. Its loyal fan base extends globally, reflecting its iconic stature in the automotive world.
In a nod to this rich history and in anticipation of the Land Cruiser's highly-anticipated 2024 comeback to the North American market, Toyota has proudly unveiled the Rod Millen Group's 1967 FJ45 Land Cruiser Wagon, affectionately termed 'The Retro Cruiser'. This special vehicle will be on display at Toyota's booth during the SEMA show, which runs from October 31 to November 3.
The Retro Cruiser is far more than just a concept car for exhibitions; it is a testament to Toyota's innovative spirit, born from a speculative dialogue in 1999 among senior managers at Toyota Motor Sales and the famed racer Rod Millen. The project's aim was to blend state-of-the-art Land Cruiser advancements with a tribute to the model's storied past.
Marty Schwerter of Toyota Motorsports, who is overseeing the Retro Cruiser's preparation for SEMA, emphasizes that the truck is not just aesthetically pleasing but is also exceptionally well-constructed. The concept marries the classic ruggedness of the original 1967 FJ model with the luxury of the early 2000s' 100 Series, the pinnacle of Toyota's comfort vehicles at the time.
The Retro Cruiser's journey began with a modest $5,000 investment in a vehicle longing for attention. Significant modifications ensued, including a 10-inch frame extension and body alterations to bolster its muscular stance, alongside substantial performance enhancements. One standout feature is the custom-built independent rear suspension system, designed to heighten ride comfort without forsaking the Land Cruiser's hallmark resilience. The adjustments, including a widened front track and bespoke components, culminate in an impressive 12 inches of rear-wheel travel. The vehicle boasts 17-inch custom wheels paired with durable 35-inch General Tire® Grabbers and is further safeguarded by tailor-made skid plates.
Propulsion is provided by a robust 230-horsepower, 4.7L, 32-valve DOHC V-8 engine sourced from a 100 Series Land Cruiser, enhanced with a Borla® stainless steel exhaust for a more commanding sound.
Inside, the Retro Cruiser contrasts its tough exterior with an opulent interior, featuring modern Land Cruiser elements and surfaces luxuriously upgraded with Connolly® leather. The interior is fully equipped for adventure with a satellite phone, navigation system, and a significant onboard water reserve. A complete interior roll cage also adds to the vehicle's structural integrity.
In preparation for SEMA, Toyota's team has meticulously refurbished the Retro Cruiser, addressing mechanical and aesthetic aspects to restore it to its former glory.
As Mike Tripp, group vice president at Toyota Marketing, articulates, the 2024 Land Cruiser will celebrate its heritage of global exploration while aiming to attract a broader audience of adventurers. The Retro Cruiser stands as a symbol of the Land Cruiser's enduring appeal and is showcased at SEMA to inspire a new generation of enthusiasts.
The Retro Cruiser is part of a collection of 19 accessorized vehicles, builds, and concepts presented by Toyota at SEMA. This year's theme, "Track or Trail, Your Thrill Awaits", hints at a Toyota presence that showcases some of the most exhilarating performance vehicles designed for both on-road and off-road experiences, marking Toyota's most substantial SEMA engagement to date.
