Toyota trucks are more than capable offroad! But, depending on the option package, you won't get a true mechanical Limited Slip Differential. There is an Auto Limited Slip Différential feature that you can use! The AUTO LSD system aids traction by using the traction control system to control engine performance and braking when one of the rear wheels begins to spin. The system should be used only when one of the rear wheels spinning occurs in a ditch or rough surface. The system can be used on 2WD mode on 4WD models.

Question: I'm about to take my Tacoma (2012, 2WD/4WH/4WL option but base model also a STANDARD) in tomorrow because I just got it and I was in the mountains and when I was in 4wd-h I was in reverse and it was like the brakes were being applied and it smelled like burning hair I JUST became aware of this LSD thing this week and now I"m thinking I don't need to take it in but I have to drive 3000 miles this next week and don't wany any issues on the road Usually a standard will just keep rolling backwards esp if on a hill but it just stopped on its own ... is the LSD system what I'm experiencing and I should not take it in?
@thegfxmech54754 жыл бұрын
Much appreciate the time taken to stage these examples + sourcing the animation graphics of how the system works. I've had my base model Pre-runner for about 8 years now and never know what exactly the button did. This vid does a good job at showing a couple failures where your rear can fishtail out of the path if your front wheels are simply too dug in. (Possibly push your rear off a cliff!).

What is the A Trac system in Toyota? The 2010 Toyota 4Runner comes with a feature called Active Trac or A-TRAC. A-TRAC traction control has the traction benefit of locking front and rear differentials, but with less weight. The ABS (anti-lock braking system) will automatically brake a slipping wheel.

@@JoeHeine Having previously owned a car with posi, I think one advantage of this is I don't believe it will spin both wheels at the same time and you only turn it on when you need it. I had an '80 Regal with posi and an '85 Cutlass without it. Same car, engine, trans, and rear end otherwise. With the Regal it was harder to spin the rear but once both tires spin in the snow it spins the car out easier. Though with modern traction control I guess that wouldn't be an issue.

It’s an electronic limited slip. You can use it with traction control disengaged.
@DJ-du4tq6 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I'm trying to figure out HOW this is different from just regular ol' traction control.
@J-Bibble6 жыл бұрын
It's quite different. Traction control regulates engine output. Auto LSD does not regulate engine output and brakes the spinning wheel with greater force. The result is being able to pretty much spin both tires at the same time with an open diff. It works really well. I used it a few times in the snow last year after getting stuck in 2wd getting in and out of my driveway. It's great when you don't have time or don't want to shift into 4 wheel drive.
@pablomoreno19996 жыл бұрын
sort of, TC would also reduce engine output because is made to maintain stablility not traction and prevent oversteering or understeering, when offroading you need to brake the slipping wheels but you do wnat to keep power up so when the brakes stop the spinning wheel the power goes to the opposite one and also a more agressive braking so it really creates resistance. under normal driving conditions it is usually more convenient to reduce power rather than braking hard because you may want to reduce the speed or prevent a rollover or a skid, so smoother braking is required and reduce power is best, drag and physics will do the rest to keep you safe, in an awd car though traction control is very different, or should be because when you have awd you can split power between all for wheels and you want to take advantage of that, (using torque vectoring for instance) so with awd rather than cutting all power it´s better to move it around in order to find grip somewhere else in the case of AUTO LSD is like having 2 in 1 traction control, in normal mode cuts power, brakes smoothly so the car´s reaction are more predictable and handling is easier under sudden braking or moose manouvers and in LSD is better for offroad when you want to prevent spinning but keep power up and moving around looking for traction, theorically, the perfect traction control should do all these things without the need of LSD mode, but since perfection doesn´t exist, two programmes to choose from by pressing a button is still a good way to go
