I think we have to come to terms with the fact that armor and camouflage are becoming obsolete factors on the battlefield, as firepower increases, and detection systems defeat stealth capabilities. If you're going to lose the vehicle to anti-armor weapons anyway, it might as well be cheap AF, and its focus should be on its ability to bug out.

It reminds me of the speedboat strike craft. I forget which war, but it was an era of "big battleship energy" and then one side was like "What if we put 3 guys in a speedboat with a bazooka and send like, 20 of them?" The result was that the boats could approach, launch their ordinance, then escape before the big ships knew an attack was incoming, so they weren't prepared for it. Even if they maintained high alert constantly, the ship big guns werent able to rotate fast enough to track them, so the defending crew had to resort to using small arms to try and shoot rapidly moving boats. And then, even if they did get one, it was literally just 3 guys, some wood, and an engine, so the losses were minimal. Its a weird case of being cheap, fast, and unorthadox beats expensive, slow, and routine.

That was a French idea, because they couldn't build as many battleships as the British so once torpedoes were invented and torpedo boats started running around the French thought "Hey, what if we send a swarm of those against the British battleships?" The British of course were not stupid and equipped their battleships with a great variety of smaller caliber guns and also created the Torpedo Boat Destroyer, which then got also equipped with torpedoes and became just destroyer. Funniest part is that the French eventually admitted that torpedo boats were not as successful as they hoped and that to rule the seas you did in fact need a massive fleet of battleships.
