Andrew, I worked in a Toyota service department for 2 years. I was in the shop though. What I saw was that anyone who had any know how, some morals and a brain in their head, was pushed out and replaced by a puppet. This included myself. I was there for a particular reason as a young man. To start and complete my apprenticeship for mechanics for the company I admired since I could say the word “Landcruiser”. As an 18 year old, I was smart enough to be trusted with basic mechanical work, which I performed, while being paid minimum wage. I worked those conditions for two years before I finally realized I was being screwed, and I left. I had heard, “keep working hard, we’ll give you an apprenticeship” too many times. From my experience, they treat the sales people well, so they perform well, but the same is not said in the service department. Really sad isn’t it.

We buying a car for what we can effort to buy. The difference in price between a Pajero and Land cruiser, is huge! but now the point is do we really need to get that far? So it is not only a question of cost but also of why and how you are buying that vehicle. Pheraps you want to go doing overland I will definitely not spend time and money with a land cruiser I will rather looking for a camper truck style (fuso, Iveco, Isuzu nps, etc etc) which are closer in price and better suite my needs. So to summarise for everyday camping family stuff and outdoor excursion etc I will pick a Pajero because cheaper and reliable, for more serious stuff I get my hands on one of those trucks I mentioned above because for same price than a land cruiser (that needs to be heavily modification) I got a better vehicle. So this entire story of land cruiser modification, extension, and bla bla bla it doesn't make any sense to me!! Unless you have tons of cash to spare to buy it and modified, obviously by doing that you are taking your own risk because Toyota will void the Warranty for any modification you are doing.. This is a reoccurred theme and always I saw this type of arguments around please stop bring this up!

Andrew have spent hours, day, weeks month, years on modifying land cruiser.. But the true is in front of your eyes and one day you should accept it for what it is! You cannot modify a vehicle, indeed in general no vehicle. Because they were designed, designed, tested and manufactured in accordance with the Manufacture Specification and Standard and according to road safety and national law. If Toyota sells you a car as it is you shouldn't for any reason change it that is the rule number one! Which you keep failing to understand.... And now you crying!!

First of all, it is actually corrosion that's the problem - but it's internal corrosion. The transfer lever has a spring under the cross shaft that is compressed by lifting the lever up. The spring is retained by a circlip. Over time, irrespective of the way the vehicle is driven, the sliding section of the lever and the spring/circlip rust. As these are finely machined surfaces with a very close tolerance, the lever first becomes difficult, then impossible to lift. The only permanent fix for this is to pull the lever and housing off the vehicle (incredibly easy to do), clean everything up and fit a new spring and circlip, then put it all back together with a high quality waterproof grease, then regularly 'exercise' the lever. The factory seals on the housing just can't stop the formation of condensation inside the lever housing. It will be a repeat issue if not completely addressed as above, and should be addressed this way under warranty if the vehicle is still under warranty. It is not a fair wear and tear item - it is a warranty issue. I would ask Toyota for proof they took the lever off, cleaned it, replaced the spring/circlip, and reassembled it with waterproof grease. If they can't provide proof they did this (rather than just working the lever loose by repeatedly pulling it up and down) ask them to do it properly under warranty otherwise you'll be back in the same situation again very soon.
@Revnge7Fold
@Revnge7Fold Жыл бұрын
If that's the case then why not send pictures of the internals showing the rust?
@nelsyoung833
@nelsyoung833 Жыл бұрын
You have a good point and clear explanation. Water ingress is probable if the vehicle is crossed on deep water or may have been caused by 'stray' splash of water sipping into the lever shaft. Aside from the seal, they could have designed to put a rubber boot as double protection for water and dust.
@contributor7219
@contributor7219 Жыл бұрын
@@Revnge7Fold It's absolutely the case. As I said in my comment (read it again) it is possible to effect a short-term fix by working it up and down without removing it from the vehicle - but that won't last. If Toyota did that they won't have any photos of the corroded internals, because they didn't remove it and repair it properly - hence me suggesting he go back to Toyota to confirm it was repaired properly.
@contributor7219
@contributor7219 Жыл бұрын
@@nelsyoung833 The lever housing does have a flexible rubber 'boot' and the mating halves are supposed to be assembled with sealant, but this just isn't enough to keep all moisture out. From the factory Toyota put a tiny amount of protective lubricant on the sliding surfaces, just enough so the lever slides, but not enough to provide protection from the inevitable moisture ingress. If you are unlucky enough to get a car where Toyota saved a few more cents by using insufficient lubricant, you get this problem sooner rather than later.

Is this an issue with newer toyotas? My first gen hilux has never suffered from this even though it only gets used in 4wd very occasionally. Same with the 3x 70 series landcruisers I've had or still have, the newest being 1992. It can go 6 months or more without being in 4wd, no issues. Have toyota fixed something that wasn't broken and in doing so caused a problem?

Mitsubishis are hugely underrated and their warranty cover is superior. I've owned both Toyota and Mitsubishi in the past 5 years and in terms of warranty cover Mitsubishi is far far superior to Toyota and my Japanese built Mitsubishi is better built than the Toyota. No corrosion or trim falling off in the Mitsubishi. Both issues in the Toyota which were ignored by the service department.

I drive Isuzu Dmax for two tears now. After about 40000km vibrations during breaking appeared. The Isuzu service stated that front discs are bent and they replaced them with new brake pads under warranty. I was very surprised that they made it this way. I live in Poland which is very small market for pickup vehicles (there are only 2 new Dmaxs in my town which is 450000 people). They said that they know this problem, it was caused by bad type of brake pads, that's why they decided to reply whole front brakes. Thank you Isuzu 🙂

I had a similar experience when I took my 70 series in for its 1000 km service and I mentioned that the rear springs had a very loud squeaking noise and was told after the service that as I had after market suspension it was nothing they could fix. No after market work had been done on the vehicle at this time.

I had the local dealer look at one of the rear springs on my 79 series as it had sagged and was squeaking. They advised that as it was an aftermarket spring, they were unable to do anything. I advised them that the spring was in fact replaced by them under warranty and asked why an original spring was not fitted at that time... All the service person could say was that they don't know the history of every vehicle. I haven't been back.

Yep, I caught the Toyota service center in an outright lie with regard to them EVEN LOOKING AT MY TRUCK when I took it in for an issue under warranty. I asked them to diagnose a suspension-related issue that manifested itself through noises over bumps/rough terrain. They called (late that afternoon) and said they "took it on a thorough test drive, and couldn't reproduce the issue." By chance, I had taken a mental note of the exact mileage on the odometer when I dropped it off, and when I went to pick it up, the odometer read *exactly* the same....
@TrailerYacht

I photograph my odometer out of habit now when I drop my car in for a service for the same reason. I also use a sharpie to mark each tyre (non-obviously) to see if it was rotated and write the date & mileage directly on the oil & fuel filters when they are changed. Can be hard to find a trustworthy mechanic. 😇

Who btw, is an independently privately owned business, and only interested in maximising profit, and doing as little warranty work as possible. The factory don't pay the dealerships much for doing warranty work. They'd much rather the customer pay, so he can be screwed over as much as they can get away with.

We have been done by Toyota on a new 4WD, we recently sold because was too tired going back and forth. Challenges times.. waited 7 month for the bloody thing. First year we had the steering intermediate shaft failure resulting on a clunking in steering, which they tried to challenge was due to heavy off road use and then we had the steering rack ends on both sides rust away by 38,000kms and a driver side CV eject itself which was blamed on a standard 40mm lift by TJM. While I can understand the lift, could be linked - what I cant understand is because we disassembled the front shock tower track side, to reinsert the ejected CV so we could continue the 4WD track out of the Victorian High Country back home they voided the warranty on any part of the driver side suspension as we preformed this work on the side of the track. They also then advised since the ejected CV is likely linked to the 40mm lift, they also now void all suspension warranties which include the front differential. So fed up, that we just sold it 3 weeks later. True story and one only around 3 month old. The warranty situation is getting a bit beyond a joke, especially if you had heard how they talked me into buying the 4WD for exactly 4WD use, off road on our KZbin channel and even part of the sales tried to sell me a lift and GVM upgrade from factory which they also confirmed if you get lift even done pre-reg the warranty on these suspension parts are still void by Toyota but are then warranted by the company in which Toyota select to do the lift, but they don't tell you any of this at the time of sales. They are fooling us into buying something with all these conditions we silently don't realise we are accepting. It's a worry and I'm glad someone like you Andrew are now bringing this to the light.

We had nothing but issues with Toyota Australia and Ferntree Gully Toyota here in Victoria regarding our brand new 2019 Lc79. It kept popping out of 1st gear. Toyota Ferntree Gully repeatedly said there's nothing wrong after a "test drive." it wasn't until more of these issues started popping up and when I mentioned this to Toyota Ferntree Gully the service rep asked me if I actually had this issue or if it was something I had read online, they even started asking how long I had been driving a manual car for... WTF. The issue was extremely dangerous when it REPEATEDLY popped out of Low range 1st gear in the high country. Very scary with my family in the car. We purchased this car as a tourer, it more kms touring than running around the shops. FINALLY Toyota Australia issued a service note that certain landcruisers with xxx vin had had an incorrect first gear 'cog' installed and that it should be replaced under warranty. FINALLY after 4 visit they agreed to replace the first gear issue. But this was only th start of the jsjses!issues!!! I immediately had vibration issues through the car. I returned a total of 6 times to Toyota Ferntree Gully and the excuses they gave me were HILARIOUS. They started blaming the accessories on the car; they blammed the tyres, the bp51s, my canopy, roof racks and even my bull bar.... I actually recieved a letter from Toyota Australia that they would jot authorise their dealers to look into my issue unless the "heavily modified" car was returned to standard... Yup I called Toyota aus and they said I even had to remove the sound insulation... Again, WTF. Long story short, ended up a friend of a friend who works at Nunawading Toyota who did me a solid and had a look. IMMEDIATELY he said he knew what the problem was. The incompetent baboons at Toyota Ferntree Gully had done a half ass job at taking my gear box out. They got lazy and removed the gear box without removing my arb sliders and cross member and just smashed the gearbox in and out (there were marks all over the box and body). As a result they knocked out the spigot bearing! How the f$&k do you manage that and then BLAME THE CUSTOMER for the "heavy modifications" to a lightly modified landcruiser!? Toyota Ferntree Gully and Toyota Australia ended up admitting wrong doing and replaced the clutch, flywheel and bearings inside the gear box. No apology, no nothing!! Andrew this has left such a sour taste in my mouth I will never ever buy another product from Toyota Australia again!! I'm not dissing the cars, I'm saying buy a Toyota and just know that Toyota Ferntree Gully and Toyota Australia DO NOT GIVE A S&$T ABOUT UOU ONCE THEY TAKE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY!! sorry for the rant. I hope you resolve your issue in a timely manner.

A bit off tangent here but I had similar experience with my hilux. It has a timing chain rattle on start up for a few seconds. This is a known issue to do with with a bad tensioner which they said yeah it would be covered as there is a bulletin for it. But then after taking my car in a couple of more times for gods knows what to further diagnose they now say it’s within spec because they’ve moved the goal posts. Had there not been a class action for the dpf issue I’m sure my hilux would still be blowing white smoke.

Hi Andrew, I have had the very Toyota warranty-void responses from Toyota (Australia) staff, literarily on arrival for a normal service interval (10,000km). The advice was that the paint warranty is now void as I put a decal (sticker) on the hood adjacent the intercooler inlet. I asked (insisted) for this to be put into writing but they simply refused. The advice was that they don't need to. I also have a clutch/driveline shudder issue (from new) but because I have a bullbar fitted, the warranty on any suspension or driveline component is also now void owing to the extra weight ?!?!?!? They consider the ARB bulbar as having significantly extra weight. I had a very firm discussion with the staff and simply pointed out that Toyota also fits a Toyota bullbar and side rails to the 79's. This had no impact on the conversation. The shudder still exists and they have on multiple service visits confirmed that the warranty is void. The Toyota warranty means nothing. I also have the same high wear issue ion the brakes and had to have the rotors machined (badly warped) and new pads fitted at roughly 30k. Again Toyota (Australia) refused to entertain a warranty claim and I hardly do any off roading. Their response was "I must be hard on the brakes". Terrible, terrible, terrible..... Oh, and the Safari snorkel voids the engine warranty as well. You can guess that the conversation was cut short at that time....

Thanks for sharing. Reports like this help consumers who might be on the fence when it comes to buying their 1st or even next Toyota. At what point does a manufacturer need to reach to say it's time to use better materials and or make the customer experience as smooth as possible? I have noticed the Australian market shifting a bit to the big 2500, 3500, and big F Series. The CEO of Toyota resigns, Australians have more confidence in American made products than Japanese. I would never have thought that 20 years ago.

Very frustrating... Fella just posted on YT with a new 79 that's had a brakeline ripped out when the driveshaft bolts came undone, and the shaft went wild. Warranty refused because 'vehicle has been used off-road'...I have 2021 Troopie with 9000km, that I ran out of fuel on the sub because there's no 'low warning' gauge on the sub tank. As it ran out, I got engine warning lights (take vehicle to dealer). I ran a scan and an 'airflow' read came up. Cleared it, and did another 60 km, then it came back on. Did this for 2 days until I fully filled the sub with diesel, then it stopped doing it....until the sub was down to 1/2, then it started again. Will do it in any conditions ie. coming off cruise at 110kmh, or crawling in traffic. Only constant is whether the sub is below 1/2...then it starts. Got my local dealer to use their scan tool, and they got the same fault code. Said they only get that code 'without reason' on vehicles that have 'pedal controllers'. I dont, but do have Safari ARMAX fitted. Dealer didn't charge me for the scan read, and I'm now trying all kinds of 'variable conditions' to see if I can get repeatability under normal operating parameters (that a tech/mechanic can't possibly do), so it can be looked at with my report in hand to help the techs.Will then bypass the ARMAX to see if I still have the problem. When it was in for 10k service last week, I asked for the scan to be done again and 'stored codes' read as my scan tool has stopped seeing stored faults or codes. The dealer scan read 'DPF 3rd sensor faulty'. Neither the 'airflow' nor 'DPF' faults have anything to do with a sub tank running out of fuel according to the dealer workshop manager. Andrew, I dont think this is a "Toyota" issue, this is an automotive trade issue. I live in suburban Sydney. The service department at my local Toyota dealer dont care if they serve you or not - they know that if you dont return someone else will come along so they dont seem to be concerned about customer service to keep customers coming back. After my lack of satisfaction with my local dealership I took my Toyotas to a country dealership. They couldnt have been more different - always welcomed you by name, always did what you asked them to do and I always got the feeling that they actually valued your custom. Now I have a VW and while the local VW dealership are better, they try the "your wiperblades need replacing" trick which was strange because I had only replaced them a couple months previously with VW blades from their parts department. When I told them that there was no reply. Looks like I need to find a country VW dealer for serviceing in future !

In my personal experience it feels like one has to fight declined requests 3 times. It feels like most people give up along the way having been fobbed off or not wanting to be seen as trouble makers. The quality of everything we buy continues to plummet yet prices are soaring. A 12 month old Australian icon 4WD (with a premium price tag to match), and they want to quibble about a simple QA/QC issue for a basic part that should never have failed? The Toyota dealer MUST know who you are Andrew. And if they are happy to treat YOU like this, just imagine how the average owner who is not a media personality with 300,000 subscribers on their KZbin channel is treated. It seems our cars are intended to be thrown away after 5 years now, once they are just out of warranty.

I've had to repair countless amounts of these during my time working on mining fleet. The newer ones are junk and seem to have less lube from faqctory and prone to siezing easier than the previous model. We use to remove the lever housing, split it by removing the 4x bolts, soak the internals with a penetratnt then in the vice we would persuade it to move. Once free, pack it full of grease (marine grade wheel bearing grease or similar), add some non hardening aviation sealant to the gasket then rassemble. Once this was done we would never have an issue with this one again (we would just have to slowly work through the entire Landcruiser fleet until they were all modified once it was noted to be siezed). Best of luck with your warranty claim, but if they just end up replacing it with a stock new one, you will be having this issue again later on down the track.

I had issues with Low 4wd on Tacoma many times. Sometimes it works, sometimes it takes 50 to 70 seconds for it to go in to 4wd Low. Good thing is, they hold their value' I sold it for good money. I have the same story to share. Last Thursday I took my Prdo for 100k service to Gergory hills Clintons. When I made a booking, I specified a few issues I wanted Toyota to address. Of course, I received a phone call stating that it will include $180 fee for diagnostics. One of the issues was that my car pulls to the left especially when I'm breaking. Before I did wheel alignment, tyre pressure etc. Nothing helps, so it must be either breaks or bearing (but there is no sound). In the morning I brought my car. I showed the personnel there what the issues are I went on a drive with their expert. Around 5pm I went to collect the car. And I found out that N O T H I N G has been fix. Apparently, they changed oil filter and eng oil and some minor other things. The pulling to the left in their opinion was due to incorrect tyre pressure which is complete BS, and other things I asked them to address were left not done at all. Apparently, they didn't have parts ($35 pins) and the other one was not touched at all (I showed it to the personnel I spoke in the morning; he could tell me why it was not done). I paid for this service over $700.. I was seriously considering buying from them a new Proado. But I don’t think I will be going to them. Not after this.

The dealership then replaced the oil filter. In my opinion I think their training is to deflect and cause doubt that it's the customers fault....I would request a time line of photos for any warranty work/ diagnosis as my guess is some mechanics probably have a laugh each day as to how many partial or incomplete services they can get away with. If Toyotas can't handle dust, sand, moist air, and dirt, they face losing a quarter of their sales. Incidentally, Apple Computer denied an AppleCare coverage for a $3200 maxxed-out 18 month old MacBook Pro due to "corrosion" - because I had used it in Boston which, as Apple apparently knows, has ocean air. Paid $650 for the coverage because of the expense of the system and Apple refused to step up to what actually was a somewhat common design defect. That's ok... I banned Apple iPhones at our mid-sized corporation in response. If you're going to lie on systemic vulnerabilities, you're gonna get the ban stick.

I had a simple warranty issue with 1 x brand new Hilux on a Toyota flitted tow bar. They ( Toyota ) couldn’t rectify after 2 seperate visits and on the last visit “kept over night”,. I got garbled excuses over why this trailer wiring harness was not working and they were blaming the actual trailer/s wiring, although our other vehicles had no such issues. After visit 2 and much frustration I crawled under the tray and found the Toyota tow bar pack connector not all the way pushed in on the vehicle harness. This just made me think what are they actually doing while they had the vehicle… nothing it would seem. So after this experience our small fleet of Hilux’s no longer get serviced by Toyota but by a professional Independant mechanical shop.

It depends on the relationship you can establish with the dealership. I had a Toyota Dealer Principal as a neighbour and friend and as a result bought a string of Toyotas over a period of 20 years. He would give me his lowest price on a new car whilst still making a profit and said if I could do better elsewhere buy it there. I tested it a few times and told the sales manager that was the price I had been quoted a couple of them accused me of lying as they couldn’t match it. When my cars needed servicing he would pick my car up from home and leave whatever latest model he was driving usually to tempt me into buying one. I did a lap of Australia 22,000kms and put the vehicle in for a service when I got home with one damper leaking expecting to have to pay for it. They replaced all the dampers under warranty as the service manager said they may be faulty [doubtful] and also replaced the sidesteps as they had rock damage. I also had a Toyota MR2. Motor replaced outside of warranty period as apparently there was a know fault with the valve train on a batch of them. Unfortunately he sold the dealership so now I have to fight for everything like everybody else and I am still waiting for delivery of a Toyota Prado ordered in late 2021.

That's toyota's MO. I had an experience with them here in South Africa some years ago. A friend had bought a new Corrola and was complaining that the steering was not self centering. He had taken it to the dealership several times, but they told him there was no fault found. He asked me to have a look. I discovered that the steering rack was binding. He went back again and told them what the fault was, but again they refused to do anything about it. It so happened that I knew someone in the engineering dept @ the factory. so I called him. He said they knew there was a batch of racks which had been incorrectly shimmed and that the dealerships had been sent a bulletin. He gave me the bulletin number. Armed with that my friend went back. Magically the dealership then fixed it. I think the problem is that the dealerships are paid a lower rate for warranty work, so they try to fob people off or make up a story to get the customer to pay.

Hi Andrew. You might find it is just the particular workshop in question. I have a 2016 Fortuner which I was taking to one particular dealership. I had a whine from, the AC blower unit and it got rejected for warranty. I challenged the dealership and I got to meet with the diagnostic technician who was hopeless. When I went through a different diagnostic procedure which he agreed with, they decided it was worthy of warranty. The same dealership told me to replace my brake pads at 25000k's at just shy of 80 now I still have 7mm of material on them. I now take it to another Toyota dealership. I had the ac blower motor whine return and this dealership were like, yes sir, would you like a loan car free of charge? My father has a 2021 hilux and he had a similar experience with this first dealership as well. My suggestion is that you remind they dealership who you are and perhaps another dealership may be more willing to work with you.

I have had a few issues with my 2016 LC200, most were minor and had a quick fix. The one issue that I started to receive negative feedback attitude from the dealer service department was the black sooting in the exhaust pipe. They started to argue that the sooting was normal, it was within Toyota's guidelines. It was only when I stood my ground and stated that with DPF's fitted to the car, that sooting should occur what so ever. I told them that I would not accept Toyota's guidelines and that I demanded this issue to be rectified as the vehicle was not performing to the current pollution regulations for that year model. The outcome was they replaced all of the injectors including the ones in the actual DPF's, the DPF's various exhaust components and much more. The exhaust had no soot what so ever for the next 24 months. It started sooting again at about 80,000 kms (2023). I took the vehicle back to the dealer and a day later they advised that Toyota had discovered more items that were causing the sooting than what was originally replaced. The vehicle had all of the originally replaced items replaced again as well as the additional items. When I asked why they were replacing the original replacements as well, they said that they as the dealer convinced Toyota to start from scratch and replace everything so it would be easier to monitor with all new parts. The cost of this work was thousands of dollars and covered under warranty even though the vehicle is well outside the warranty period. This story had a happy ending and I am convinced it was because I was prepared to argue and that I had a good dealer.

As a Toyota mechanic of 15 years in Canada I can assure you the exhaust shields rot 50 times faster than anything else and still last years on roads that are salted all winter. We also as dealerships fight with the head office for approval and labour times as we get it from both ends. Work is work and on our end we want to do it, and it is very frustrating. There are jobs we don’t like doing because they will pay us about half the hours it would be under customer pay, but a good dealership/mechanic values the customer retention and will work to get it through. Here, Toyota is light years better than the domestic brands for honouring warranty issues, but there are situations where it can be a bit of a fight. It really seems in your situation that it is down to the service manager, if it was solved without a parts replacement and was as simple as a stick or a picture of rust, I wouldn’t charge. Pay the tech internally for the hour, explain the situation to the customer and if it reoccurs charge on the next visit.

I have had a similar experiences with Toyota. The first one was with the fuel tank on a 2 year old dual cab 79. The breather failed and the fuel pump sucked the sides of the tank in and destroyed the tank. Called Toyota and got the same spiel about the inspection fee. Toyota claimed they had never seen this before, called another dealer and used a different line of questioning and they acknowledged that it was a common occurrence. Second one was after a service, someone picked the vehicle up for me and the fuel filter light was on when I received it. I called the lack of service department and they said that I have modified the exhaust and the person driving the car home had accelerated sharply on an uphill run and that caused the filter light to come on. I asked for an explanation of how this could be and received an absolute fairy tale. I then asked if they could send someone out to rest the light as I was 102KLM from the dealer. After absolutely refusing in the first instance they finally relented and told me to go and unplug the sensor and turn the ignition to on, plug the sensor in and wait 5 seconds. When I went to unplug the sensor it was already unplugged, they had not plugged it back in when they replaced the filter. The absolute garbage about the exhaust and acceleration proves that Toyota is hell bent on not admitting fault even if they have to lie. No apology was forthcoming. The 3rd instance was relating to there cap price servicing which I have always suspected was a farce. We had just crossed the Simpson and the vehicle went in for a service ( after waiting 6 weeks for an appointment). After receiving the vehicle back I checked the air filter and it was filthy even though the 20K service said that it was to be inspected. I just wonder how many other items are not inspected or done at all under the cap price service model?

What I ve expired and heard so far is that they will even cover a bad drive shaft after 7 years. I ve had some Batterie problems and they covered it. What they absolutely not like and not going to cover is a modified vehicle. Unfortunately, that's where the bad part begins.

👍. I’m surprised they didn’t say it’s because of the mods, weight & the fact that u have been using it as a 4x4. Yes I’ve heard that one before. At a guess when it comes to warranty claims from any company they may have a different reporting process compared to just the customer paying to fix it. Ie if the vehicle is repaired under warranty the claim has to go through a head office & then oh that’s happened a lot we need to actually upgrade something on a 15 year old vehicle design to warrant the hi price tag. Where as if a customer just pays for the fix. They can sweep it under the carpet. & still claim Toyota’s so called great reliability. But imo. It just comes back to companies want to sell the product for a hi price & not want to take responsibility for their product…. What happened about the breaks? Did u put factory parts or aftermarket parts back on?

The FIRST thing they asked me, before I even gave them a description of the fault, was WHAT MODS HAVE YOU DONE? I have an aftermarket air filter box fitted with associated pipework as well as an Armax snorkel. As I was going to the Cape I needed it to be solid and paid the investigation fee, even though they could find no cause. Feel pretty let down that after spending over $100k on a new car the default position is to deny warranty claims.

They will need to reply to you. It is sad to see how service people try to wash away customer claims and this is dishonesty. My view is that the service person represents Toyota Australia and this is the bottom line. Simple. I understand that this is not an isolated issue but this is where Toyota Australia need to seriously look into this. Toyota Australia need to see that their reputation of product reliability is destroyed or tarnished with shady after sales service and customer dissatisfaction based on bitter after sales experience.

I had a 2014 Toyota Tacoma and at long railroad crossings the air con would stop working or sitting in line at a drive thru or sitting at idling anyplace the air con would just stop blowing cold. Once I got moving again it would blow cold. This at the time was a brand new truck with less than 1,000 miles. I brought it in repeatedly “everything is operating within specifications” I had a 2017 Lexus LS460 and I had this horrible whistle to the brakes, “unable to duplicate” it wasn’t until writing their CEO in Japan that they finally sent someone out and they figured out the problem. I have also had issues with the electronic trunk lid failing to open and other various issues. It’s been a bit of a bumpy ride. There is an address that you can get, I sent a certified letter to the CEO in Japan, some dude from Japan personally replied and then I got a call from Toyota/Lexus corporate here in the US and they coordinated with the dealership to get a corporate tech out to figure out the brakes.

In the states. If a warranty claim is made by the technician and the car company decides it's not going to pay for it,that dealership has to"eat" that claim. Plus, customer pay,puts more money in the technician's,the service writer and the dealership's pocket. Warranty only pays less than half.

I had a case with isuzu in 2016 were my dmax suddenly has lost movement and i towed it to the dealer, after inspection and dismantling the transfer case, they found gears synchros are damage and the needed 3500 dollars to replace it. When I came back to them, I found a TSB from isuzu written in it the issue printed by the service manager and immediately he hidden it. I was angry at him and asked him why, he mentioned that I lost the warranty because I skipped on service of the entire service plan. He sad there was a revision on the oil used rather than 15w40 diesel engine oil they shifted to 5w50 synthetic oil to basically push cars passed the warranty period. Also, I noticed they have revised the spare part to solve the issue and it was not available locally and I insisted to have them which caused a big delay. I sold the truck in 2017 and I am not coming back to them again. In 2022 I was intending to by SUV diesel either furtuner, pajero sport or isuzu mux, and after carful thought, and remembering the hassle I had before, I went with Mitsubishi. Not to say they are the best but I am reminded of the cases I had to deal with both Toyota ( camery 2004 worst car I had) and the isuzu.

Wow! A very strong case right there. Cannot wait to see what Toyota's response is. Hopefully they have enough integrity to engage and respond.

Having owned many Toyota's in South Africa where at the time up until I emigrated in 2001 had an outstanding after sales record for warrantee issues and even outside warrantee, I had a 1978 Hilux with 200,000km and fitted a turbo by a Toyota approved centre, after 5000km the main bearing journals broke off ejecting the crankshaft. The vehicle was returned to the turbo installer for a review and repair, Toyota collected the exploded engine for inspection and a week later I was contacted to say that a brand new engine had been supplied and the only cost would be installation which considering the vehicle was way out of warrantee was excellent service (It was stolen shortly after it was returned). I have in 2021 purchased a new Hilux 2.8 Invincible here in Hungary where I now live and find the build quality a bit flimsy but was hoping for the Hilux reliability but a rear Diff whine started at around 12,000km and by 16,000km was very loud in the cab, I took it to a Toyota main dealer in the Netherlands where I was at the time to register a warrantee issue, firstly they blamed the new BF Goodrich tyres as road noise and charged me for a diff oil change (no oil metal particle analyses was done) I put it down to the lack of experience on the Hilux and 4x4 Toyota range as they are not common at all in that part of Europe. Having returned to Hungary took the Vehicle to local Toyota main dealer (Hilux is very popular with farming and Government in Hungary), a mechanic went for a test drive with me and straight away agreed it was the diff, a week later a complete diff rebuild had been carried out with a long list of parts totalling thousands of Euros all totally free of charge. (Hilux are manufactured in Durban South Africa for the European market where I was born)

Toyota dealers in The Netherlands have zero knowledge nor experience with 4x4’s they sell. Better to avoid them if possible.Better contact specialized firma like 4x4 Ermelo who know can solve any problem (although not under warranty).

Good morning, same problem on my 78 at first i tought ok is there any trick to get it in to low range that i dont know. Then after a while going back and forth it went in, ok so didnt touched it again till i needed it at some point didnt go in ok. I didnt even bother going to my Dealership because i worked 4years for Toyota as a Mechanic i know how it goes with warranty so i did the repair myself. I know the struggle with warranty claims and i can tell you most of the mechanics know if the part needs replacement under warranty. The problem is most of them dont know how to fill out and do the checking which Toyota wants before they give there go for replacing the part. I know its a bit of a struggle but most Dealerships doesnt train there people and send them to toyota for warranty workshop. I hope you get that part fixed under warranty best of luck. best regards from germany

Andrew, the contempt Toyota Australia and their dealer network have for their customers is nothing short of disgraceful. I bought a brand new 2021 Hilux SR5+ 6 speed manual, disclosing the purpose as going through Cape York etc. I was assured this was the perfect car. However, after the first off-road trip, the handbrake failed and continues to fail. My warranty claim was "refused" on the basis that I drove in mud. Evidence supplied to me to support this was about 5 external photos of my Hilux covered in mud, nothing more. The front doors seals have failed flooding the electrics with water, yet they won't even address this stating the door seals cannot go below the water line!?! The water wadding depth is 700mm, well above this. I have followed their instructions to the letter, but Toyota accuse me of causing the problems. I am taking TMCA and Brian Hilton Toyota West Gosford to the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal but this is ongoing taking over a year costing me around $5k in costs and over $30,000 lost for the Hilux. Thought this was bad. My new 2022 78 series has 16,000kms. The wife and I drove to Port Douglas from the NSW Central Coast. In Townsville (2,500kms) from my home, the 78 went into "limp" mode. The local Toyota dealer told me this was not a warranty claim and to have a local mechanic fix the problem. This would void my warranty and they didn't even look at the car. Turns out the number 1 injector failed and needs to be replaced. After telling me it was bad diesel or possibly caused by rats, they accepted the claim. Disgraceful. Anyone thinking about a Toyota, the warranty means nothing and their customer charter is pure rhetoric 😢

@davethomson2895

@LOT 6 In case you are unaware, there is a lengthy wait for certain cars including the Troopy, which you are likely no longer able to buy new. The Troopy has always been my dream car. It was ordered well before the Hilux and the Hilux issues. The majority of the issues discussed were post purchase of the Troopy (hindsight is a good thing). No issues, there were choices I made, but this is out there for others to help make an informed decision and the disgraceful behaviour of Toyota. Cheers

Hello Andrew, Give them hell mate. This behaviour from Toyota is in unconscionable conduct. They need to be reminded that is was an Australian who codeveloped the Land Cruiser for the mining and agriculture industries and they have been riding the back of these industries for decades from this partnership. I wish you strength and resilience with this matter.

Andrew, I take the liberty to correct you. There are no warranty issues with Toyota, simply because the warranty expires once you left the show room with your brand new Toyota. I was there I know firsthand. I, too was lured by the “so called Toyota reliability”. There isn’t one. Everything in a Toyota is engineered and built on the edge so at most it will last the warranty, usually it does not. But Toyota has a policy that says everything is client’s fault. Hence the reason they conceal major faults from the public. Want a reminder? Rotting chassis on North American pickups, seever knocks in the LR 150 auto gear boxes, front suspension failuer in the LR Prado, cracks in the LR 120/150 dashboard etc. I can go on but Toyota is not worth the effort.

The classic warranty avoidance is the refusal by a number of manufacturers or utilities to replace or repair dual mass flywheel clutch assemblies that became noisy or failed. In my case a Ford Ranger, At 65k my Ranger developed a loud rattling noise at idle , although the clutch would operate it had a strange looseness to its operation, dealership stated Ford policy of no replacement as they deemed it drivable and it may be my driving style, I removed the gearbox and found the dual mass flywheel had rotated on its spring mechanism so much that I was unable to access the bolts securing the flywheel to crank, the clutch plate and pressure plate surface was as new, I replaced it with one of the many single mass conversions available and being marketed solely because there had been so many problems with this type of clutch in various brands of 4WD italicise and SUV's. Well down the track now, the industry is and was well aware that there was a problem however tried to suppress it, this is simply a case of poor choice of components for the purpose most of these vehicles were used for.

I’ve come across very poor sales people in Toyota dealerships; some years ago I was in the market for a Prado, knew what I wanted, model, colour and trim. One dealership told me that non were available, told me it was a special order and wanted me to sign an order there and then. I shopped round and another dealer found exactly what I was looking for in one of Toyotas holding yards less than 300km away. Obviously I ordered from the second dealership (I actually had five quotes from dealerships in my region) who’s price delivered was significantly cheaper than the one down the road, were great to deal with and delivered my Prado to my front door. The cream on the cake with the story is that the first sales guy phone me to follow up on his quote and became abusive over the phone when I told him he had missed out. Sure glad I didn’t buy there.

I had a wheel come off my 79 dual cab after it went in for a major service less than 400km earlier. I was doing 100km/h, fully loaded and towing a caravan. Luckily i didnt roll i and managed to get the car safely off the road. 3 sheared wheel studs and 2 perfect, but no wheel nuts. Toyota fought this for 6 weeks trying to blame the aftermarket rims, even though they couldnt explain how the 2 other nuts fell off if they were torqued correctly from the service. Finally after having one final email explaining that i was happy to go to magistrates court, and included the dealer principal on the email chain they decided to pay the $2500 in repairs. From what ive heard, warranty claims are a pain for them as they are paid out for the exact amount of labour as specified in the repair manual. SO if they have an issue and it takes longer, that'is free labour and costing the dealership. The best way to tackle any warranty claim is to be full bottle on the consumer laws and your rights before you go in, as they will try to dive, duck and dodge around any warranty work. Good luck with the claim and hopefully they come good

Hi Andrew, as a fully qualified Motorcycle Mechanic/Engineer and years as a hands on Workshop Service Manager. In the 1980’s and 1990’s wages were high and in New Zealand we got no extra bonuses for working hard etc. So to do warranty work was fine just got paid for each hour you worked at work and the company lost money per hour doing any warranty repairs? Because Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha are like Toyota and any other brand, they only pay a fraction of the chargeable hourly rate! When we were charging out $40 per hour to a customer. The Honda was paying us only $20 per hour on Warranty work, this is because the manufacturers believe that the dealership make money when they sell a vehicle! This is still true today, but the problem is the salesman get commission selling a vehicle, but the workshop staff/mechanics don’t. Today with lower hourly pay rates, mechanics need to work hard to have a better charge out rate/dollars earned by the business per hour from each staff member, if you have a good charge out rate, each week then you earn a bonus adding to ones weekly income. It’s impossible to get ones bonus for the week doing one or more warranty repairs! because of the low warranty pay rates to the business. So these days Service Managers try to pull the wool over Customer‘s eyes to help their mechanics make their weekly bonuses. It’s also frustrating over the years when I would once fight for the customer to get a warranty in the manufacture would say no ! Then if the customer phoned directly to the manufacturer and spoke to the right person, we get a phone call saying that we should’ve been doing warranty on customers vehicle and asked us to cover half the costs in exchange for them supplying the parts for a charge ! So the customer would win, but the staff and dealer would be out of pocket. I did have one warranty department tell me how another shop was doing repairs and upgrades without charging it to the customer and that I should have my mechanics do the same! I asked them straight if they were gonna pay for the beers each Friday night for them doing free work ? And got laughed at , within 12 months that other motorcycle shop was out of business. It’s tough , the manufactures should be paying the dealerships much more, the warranties and goodwill should be going further than they ever used to go there now less. I have no idea what the future of splits going backwards as far as I can see I’m glad to be out of the industry . Ps: I not only worked in NZ but in the UK to and it was worse when I was there to New Zealand, it also seems to be very bad in Australia.
