The owner of this Toyota Yaris complained of an engine noise. It wasn't leaking coolant and the valve train was very noisey, but as it turns out the noise under the hood was the water pump. Follow along and I'll show you everything you need to know to replace a Yaris water pump or most any serpentine belt driven pump.

Hi Brian. Have you ever seen permatex high tack. You can get it in a brush can or spray can. It's what you should use in that application instead of Right stuff
@mrb1864
@mrb1864 6 жыл бұрын
spray tack not bad but all I do on decent quality gaskets like that is smear a little grease on surface of gasket, keeps it in place and helps bed it in plus keeps surfaces cleaner for time it may come off in future . Never had one leak yet . Have had some really poor paper gaskets with some aftermarket junk when very light smear rtv seems best best though .

Added hint.....don't need any further gasket sealant.....use the metal/composite gasket that comes with the new factory (Aisin) unit.....and if YOU ever need to do it again....no issue scraping off goo. Mine didn't leak using only the provided metal gasket on a clean engine mounting surface.

It’s even easier if you just get the water pump that comes with coated metal gasket like the OEM one. They never seem to leak (the gasket) and it’s faster to install and a lot easier if the pump needs to be changed again.

@emilecollin6927

Well you aren’t quite right, I had to completely change the gasket because once the aluminum one breaks even a little bit, it leaks everywhere. Silicone makes it stick to the water pump so you don’t accidentally snap it like I did or install it wrong.

I brace it with a prybar- I know that seems sketch like you're going to bend it, but I've done more than a hundred without bending a single one. From there, I just pop it off by hand. I think the prybar twist method helps break it free as you go around getting the three bolts cracked free.

Put a pipe, or a closed end wrench/spanner on the open end of the 10mm for more leverage. Make sure you are turning the correct direction.

On a related note: The sliding nut on the alternator was the cause of my week plus of driving with a strange noise. (recently replaced an alternator). Could not figure it out until I got an automotive stethoscope. Best $15CAD ever spent. I did not tighten the 14mm properly (pulling the slide nut in) and it caused the alternator to vibrate and possibly ruined some bearings in the alternator. The only combo that fit the limited space was a 1/4" drive adapter and a small socket. I have ruined 2 of the 1/4" adapters and ultimately welded the socket and said ruined adapter together! Noise is gone!

There's a big difference between my 1.3 litre MK1 Yaris and a family member's 1.0 litre. I can almost stand in the engine bay of the 1 litre and everything is so, so, so accessible. It has the air filter on top of the engine block too, mine is to the right. Best thing is the oil filter on the 1 litre can be accessed and taken off by putting your hand straight through next to the radiator. It's basically designed for ease of use. On my 1.3 I have to get underneath the car and it's a lot easier if I remove mud guards and trim that gets in the way. I'd go for a 1.0 for my next one just because it's so easy to maintain!
