I just filled my gas tank on my RAV4 Prime for the first time. Almost two months in, 2800 miles driven, and I was down to 1/4 tank. I ended up with putting 9.7 gallons into it. I can live with that!
@YungSteambuns
@YungSteambuns 2 жыл бұрын
Why do you even care about how much you're paying for gas when you drop $40k+ on the car? For real, how are you blind to the original purchase price? As an example I've kept track of every mile since I purchased my 03 echo which I paid $900 for it. 25,351 miles at $2,367.94 since July 2019 You know how long it's gonna take to even be worth the compensation? You'll never find out in the cars lifetime.

@@YungSteambuns ..Many safety features on the RAV4 Prime. Also, if you use this car for business use., the money they give you for gas will pay for your car payment , without doing anything extra (depending on how much you drive). Also federal income tax credit. March 1, 2020 figures assuming 100 miles driven a day. Employer pays 35 cents per mile, so I get $35.00 a day in gas money. Gas is $3.50 per gallon. Case 1: 25 mpg regular car. I would spend $3.50 x 4 = 14.00. So save 35-14= $ 21 miles per day. If you work 5 days a week. 5x21=$105 per week. $105x4.333 weeks per month= $454.00 per month Case 2: RAV4 Prime cost about $6.00 to run for every 100 miles. So each day you work you make $35 per day minus $6.00 per day in gas. So. $35-6 =$29 per day savings. So $29.00 per day times 5 days per week times 4.333 weeks per month (ie. $29 x 5 x 4.333 = $ 627.00 per month gas savings). Conclusion: Your 25 mpg car with a $300.00 car payment is the same as a RAV4 Prime car payment, say $1,000.00 per month minus $627 you make off the gas savings is $373 per month ($1000-627= 373). So the 25 mpg car cost $300.00 per month car payment. The RAV4 cost 373.00 per month car payment. You wind up with a car with better trade in value with more luxury, safer features, with trailer towing capabilities of the RAV4 Prime (2,500 lbs towing capacity). Auto pre-heat/ pre-cool before you get into the car. A 120 volt 1500 watt inverter of camping use. You can sleep in the RAV4 prime with the A/C or heater on without running using the gas engine.

Great video you did Jeff and very in depth review of it. So glad you were able to test drive this vehicle for us. I did have a little trouble following you in the video and fully understand just how it works with the different buttons. I think this might take a bit to get use to and how each button works. I am thinking that if you are able to buy one of these your dealer might have to spend a bit more time with you explaining how each button works and going over that with you. I do really like this new Prime a lot and what all it does. I really like this red and black color a lot and those rims really make it look sharp. Also love that color interior they did with the black soft tech and red stitching. What I don't like is the really high price tag for this but I do understand there is a lot of stuff you can get on this. I think a lot of the stuff you can get on here is priced a bit to high like floor mats for example $269.00 I know the higher up package is the best opinion to go with because of what's on it and does. One thing people need to look into is what this will cost you at home having to plug it in all the time to charge it.

The one HUGE downside of owning the XSE with the Premium Package (that adds the Handsfree Power Liftgate) is that you can’t get an OEM tow hitch as an option. Can you DIY or take it somewhere to do it? Sure, but you’ll need to cut into your bumper and reposition the HPL sensor cables. They obviously sat around and said, “On the fully loaded model, let’s not let them add a quality bike rack.” No, I don’t want to hoist them up onto the roof rack or use the type that hooks onto the spoiler and bounces around on the rear window/bumper. Bad form, Toyota!

The only problem with this (I own two Rav4 Primes) is, you are hauling around a combustion engine and gasoline for nothing. Toyota has finally produced an all electric (type) SUV and it's not the best. It needed better technology and more range with quicker charging. I've used almost zero gasoline since purchases but, paid a premium for these vehicles with some mark up and after tax rebates. 302hp is nor too shabby but, I'd you are in EV mode 99% of the time, you might as well have gone full electric. Toyota just released a Full EV SUV that was half-assed mailed in foe MPG regulations. 0-60 in 6.9 seconds amd a 250ish mile range with not the best space or technology. It should be faster 0-60 than the Rav4 Prime. Also, lugging around heavy batteries. NOW, the key is whether or not the gasoline and combustion engine weighs more than the extra batteries. The extra batteries probably weigh more. Sad

@@UhhhhhnooOOo00oO I get where you are coming from but I still have no regrets about buying a Rav4 Prime rather than a full EV. I love that I never have to stop to charge when on road trips with my family. When home and driving around town I can go 2 months without gassing up, but on weekends (like this weekend) I drove 600 miles without having to waste time sitting at a charger. Works perfectly for my needs.

@@Monkeyseemonkey79 I agree but, is it worth it for one trip a year of 600 miles? And, you could have made that trip in an full electric. You stop for lunch and/or gas.....obviously until it's 5 minutes or less.....the technology exists, but it's expensive and in most current situations can cause battery life drain. They can charge a car battery in 5 seconds but, you'd get about 2 charges out of your car and the batteries would be done. Like cell phones. It's why cell phone charging cords are short and slow as your charge gets nearer to 100% (Not really 100% and not really bear zero. You sgouodb5 use your phone whilst charging and the slower the charge, the better for the life if the battery. (Charging between 20% and 80% is paramount for lithium ion or Nickel hydride batteries.) Rav4 should have had lithium ions and not Nickel Hydride but, they are more expensive. You'd get slightly longer range and they are slightly lighter. I'm summation: Of one has a Rav4 Prime, they have a decent amount of money. It's really for zero to sixty in 5.2 seconds in an "efficient" decent size SUV. (The bigger the more batteries they can fit but, there is a weight trade off at one point.) 302hp. Most don't even know about the different modes and never take it out of default or change the regen. Two Rav4 Primes in a close family and they have almost zero clue how the system works. They just know, that they have never used fuel. For long trips, they use their regular gasoline SUV and they have a "regular" hybrid Venza. The new one. Decently built vehicle. My Mercedes' [plural] are foe weekend driving and real driving. It takes about 5-7 years to recoup the extra cost of the "Prime" if Rav4 Prime. Especially, with today's demand upon demand. It's really for convenience and your feeling of ZEN. Shh..don't ask where those batteries come from, how they are manufactured or about the disposal of them. Still, with every calculation made, after about 10 years of ownership, (I used to always lease) you save about 1/3 in emissions over a decent mph gasoline powered vehicle and about 1/4 of the overall costs. Remember: Batteries are older than petroleum in powering things. Still, better for the environment and more efficient now. That was not a summation by me. This was a long rant. Most lug around a huge SUV body for the one time a year you go to the dump or help a friend move. Then all smiles

@@UhhhhhnooOOo00oO I fully understand the drive modes (I read the owners manual cover-to-cover) and I don't only take one 600 mile trip a year. I took 10 trips over 600 miles in the last year. And I drive 300 miles roundtrip sometimes as much as 4 times a month. But then I can go two months between those 300 Mile trips. I have unusual driving patterns where, unless I'm doing those 300 mile trips, I'm working from home and driving only 0-35 miles per day. That's why a Prime is perfect for me - I don't use gas all week, then sometimes use a little going camping, mountain biking or skiing on the weekends. Then when I need to do the 300 mile trip to my work's HQ (pasding over two mountain ranges and sometimes in the dead of winter where EV's see their range tank) I can cruise in my Prime with zero range anxiety and don't need to refill gas or recharge the battery at a charging station the entire trip - I just hit the road and plug it in when I get back home. Yes, I could sit at a charger somewhere for 45 minutes but I don't want to. I make a lot of money per hour and value my free time - so my time is very valuable to me. That's why I don't yet own an EV. Come the day EVs can give me the same driving range as a Prime, I'll switch. But right now, for $31k (after state and fed rebates/credits) I know I bought the best value car for my lifestyle and I've saved $$$ not burning much gas over the last 16k miles. And I have't wasted a single minute sitting at a charger or worrying about range anxiety. I get tired of people dumping on plug-in-hybrids. They make perfect sense for certain driving habits and the resale value is unbelievable. I could sell mine tomorrow for over $16k more than I paid for it (net) a year ago. Zero regrets.
@UhhhhhnooOOo00oO
@UhhhhhnooOOo00oO 2 жыл бұрын
@@Monkeyseemonkey79 100%. The resale is more than I paid still. People do dump on plug ins. They are the best in today's market, until battery technology improves. I was implying the vast majority of humans that own the vehicle. On another matter: "Dead of winter" does effect battery range as well. It also depends. In my weekend cars (because I'm able to afford it) I use my gas money pit Mercedes [plural] with a decently heavy foot and to use higher rpms to get the oil circulating in the engine. It's that or go on a 5 hour highway drive to nowhere at higher speeds. Again, a full EV would cover 300 mile trips and you'd have to stop to sleep, eat, entertainment and rest. Usually humans have a destination. A longer trip would require more stops and with more distance, introduces the availability of more charging stations. Remember, as horrid as batteries are, you could pull up to almost anyone's house or business and use a 120v outlet. You don't have to charge a car to 100% evert time. If you needed 20 more miles, you could probably get that 45 minutes of charging. Remember, the charging from lower battery levels is faster at first. To the Rav4......I agree. I only drive about 25 miles, if that and plug it into the garage 240V. I could probably get away with a 120v but, tax breaks on a 240V was inexpensive and handy for future and other. Range anxiety is the key. You said was most consumers do. It's convenience and charging time, coupled with stations. Living in the city, it's almost impossible to manage a full EV. My friend has a beautiful home I'm the city and estate out East and has never plugged in his Prius (Pious) Prime. He didn't even know about the demand for those cars now and bought his lease after 3 years. He get about 48 plus mpg and doesn't bother with the battery part. Interesting. He wants more safety for his family with all his money. I think he's buying a Subaru SUV for the 5 star plus safety crash score. I said the RAV4 Prime was the best evolution in the past 20 years. It's why I own 2. Still, lithium ion and why can't they make a Camry with about the same power and range? Cannibalism? They make a Prius Prime with less power because of size. Shouldn't the Prius Prime get much much better MPG than the Rav4 Prime? I think Toyota is thinking market only and profit. SUVs outsell everything (Sadly, George Bush Sr. allowing them to be classified as cars. Technically, unibody and etc.) so, Toyota gave the SUV market the top configuration. There is also much more space for batteries and power to weight. Imagine if Toyota built an SUV from the ground up for a hybrid.

Jeff. Great video. Just took delivery of my RAV4 Prime SE in the same color (roof on mine isn’t black though). It’s a GREAT car. I’ve owned almost 30 cars in my life. My very first was a 1986 Toyota Corolla 4 door, 5 speed that I learned to drive on…haven’t owned a Toyota since. This car is great!! Already took it on a 400 mile trip. I’m coming from owning 2 TESLAs (Model 3 and Y) and decided for right now, PHEVs are better for our lifestyle. We do mostly local driving (30-50 miles per day) with an occasional long trip of 400 mile +. So, with the current state of battery tech, recyclability, and weight, dragging around a 75kw battery just didn’t sit right with me…But, coming from a TESLA, hard to give up that performance. This car hits the right blend of the two. I think the SE is the way to go. The extra doodads on the XSE are nice, but they should put them on the Lexus version that will come out soon. I’d rather see them make a lower trim to get more PHEVs to the masses over the XSE which will only cater to a limited audience.

Nice video - thanks. Just getting used to my XSE non-premium, Silver Sky color. I have not put all 302 ponies to work yet - waiting until it’s better broken in. The pickup in either EV or HV seems really good. Got over 38 mpg in gas only on a trip today, so really happy with that.

i'll help you with the charge mode. in US it's useless, but ni some country like holland or denmark and soon also in germany and france. there is cities you can't enter in thermal mode. you need electric vehicle or park your car and take the urban transport . when you approache these areas you can charge electric mode to be sure you'll have enough when in the city. out of this case it's really useless

Thanks for the video...Still having a hard time trying to understand the total miles of this vehicle. If this vehicle gets 90 MPGe, I would expect a vehicle with 14.5 gallons of gas with a full electric charge is going to get over 1000 miles of combined mileage, but when I look it up online and ask the question, the answer always comes back around 500 miles, which is what it should get on a full gallon of gas if the vehicle gets ~40 MPG and has a tank of 14.5 gallons of gas...can you help my logic?
@johnnym3ma
@johnnym3ma 2 жыл бұрын
Range means before refilling and recharging. So 42 miles electric plus 14.5 gallons times 38 MPG (551) = 593. This is pretty close to the 600 mile figure as shown on the EPA website.
@MrMarkwill62
@MrMarkwill62 2 жыл бұрын
@@johnnym3ma this is more realistic... That 94 MPGe is really fluff because it can only be achieved until one runs out of main electric (vice the hybrid electric) and unfortunately for me I run out of 42 miles of main electric pretty quick

Why in the world do we need all these "driving modes"? Can't drivers just regulate power with the accelerator pedal? Isn't that was the pedal is designed for after all? And isn't that a lot easier, faster, and more intuitive than fiddling with little switches and dials? In the early days of automobiles, there was a lot of stuff the driver had to do just to get the car started. Then, as technology advanced, things gradually became more simplified and automatic. Seems like now we are going back to overly complicated for no good reason.

Due to the instant torque, it can be too much in snow/ice. Switching to ECO mode dials back the throttle response and I find it to be very helpful in low traction urban driving. Does my old gas rav4 need drive modes? No -there's not enough torque to bother. However, for the Prime it feels like swapping out your transmission.
