I drive with my car in eco in almost 100% of the time. Rare exceptions are when I expect to need to accelerate quick. People are always in such a hurry on the road but sometimes just easing to speed is saving just as much time as speeding. So many times I catch up to those who fly off the light while I’m in eco mode 😂

ECO MODE ( in Hybrid or EV ) can be used as SNOW mode, when in slippery conditions. Basically an ECO MODE - could be a SNOW MODE as it is easier to control the throttle, especially in EV mode where the torque is available instantly. Just another way to use it

Another fantastically informative video, Thank you! I find my 2019 Rav4 Hybrid chooses EV mode all on its own and it seems to always be at the right time. Going through a drive thru.... as long as it has sufficient battery it switches to EV. No gas burned for the entire 10 minutes going through. Perfect! When I start it in the morning it goes on EV mode for the first .5km of my drive. Even going down the hi-way at posted speed limit (90km/hr) Flat and level it can go into EV mode until I give it more gas or start going up hill. Driving in town it switches back and forth but surprisingly is in EV mode a lot of the time. I'm loving the hybrid version of the Rav4. Thanks again for the great video!

I tend to use ECO mode in city situations. Speed limits are low due to high density population. It keeps me from speeding. Sport mode is something we sometimes use during long road trips in summer (larger hill climbs, more weight, when there isn't a pandemic :( ), HVAC seems to perform better in this mode. EV mode only when the car needs to move a small bit.

I use EV mode when I come to a red light when the heat is on in winter (switch it on below 25 mph) to keep engine off, when reversing out of or into my garage (coolant temperature needs to be above about 70 F), drive thrus, and when parked/stopped less than 10 minutes when heat is on. ECO limits A/C power to 2500 watts on Camry compared to 3600 watts in other modes, it also decreases fan speed by a third increasing time before engine comes on due to coolant temperature drop in winter or battery depletion on hot days with A/C on. Sport mode increases responsiveness as well as sensitivity. Eco has a dampened response even if pushed quickly. The 3 modes will all produce the same maximum horsepower output at full throttle.

Sorry for my English. I have Camry 2019 hybrid on taxi, mileage 76k km. In my opinion on normal mode battery charge better and faster than eco . Example when you drive on eco mode and stop push accelerator pedal charge lvl is lower than normal mode. Try this two ways when you drive fast or when you going downhill. On normal mode charge lvl is higher when you stop accelerating. Lvl the ecomomy driving on normal mode when you learn how to drive your hybrid , it may be the same as economy mode. Ev mode is very helpfull in hot sommer when car is stop. When i have full battery charged i can use my air conditionig 1,5 hour for free. When is winter and car and engine is cold ev mode works only to 30km/h . When car is warm ev mode works normal to 50km/h . If you accelerating to much ev mode is off, slow down wait a few sec. and accelerate gently again if your battery are charged ev mode will be available again. Max distance on "electric mode only" i make is 4km. I use normal mode when i drive a car at night ar when i must charge battery fast or low traffic at day. I use eco mode at day in big traffic. I use sport mode when another driver in his 2.0 TDI car( mostly) made me angry :) and bye bye.

@tomekmackiewicz7104 ай бұрын
@@nikolavidic2928 If it's Toyota then: 1. Try to find a long straight section where you go downhill with a high speed limit. Quickly accelerate the car to 110-120 km/h or more as you can ;) Release the accelerator pedal and drive in normal or sport mode. You need to maintain such a speed (lightly or heavily braking) that the car slowly slows down and the tachometer needle remains halfway or close to 0 in the blue CHG field for as long as possible (not towards the green field). 1 km of such driving is about half a charged battery. Over time you will learn how to do it on flat ground in shorter distances. 2. Check or replace the air filter in the battery ventilation because if it is dirty, the air does not cool the battery properly, it overheats and it will not charge even up to 80%. 3. Do a battery test at the service center. service center. EV MODE is available when the battery status is 8 to 4 charged fields.

MPG average will only be about 2 mpg different between all of these modes. Also, the maximum acceleration (at full throttle) is the SAME on all these modes. The biggest reason to avoid ECO mode is because it reduces fan speed one notch for the interior heat and air conditioning system, so avoid ECO on very hot or cold days. This is what I have read in the Toyota engineering manual and also what I have experienced in my 2011 Prius.

Thank you, i can't wait to get my rav4 hybrid. It is being built this week so only a few more weeks to go. Not looking forward to a 7 year payment but i won't feel so badly when gas prices keep going up. I've been driving my scion xa for 16 years now and it has done me well so i decided to stick with Toyota because it has lasted me this long. Just time to do something newer as it is starting to fail on different things little by little and not worth sticking more money into it. You always have great advice and we the subscribers appreciate your wisdom and advice!

2021 Corolla owner here, had it for 3y and love it. The drag from the generator during liftoff is also changing with the mode selection, it increases in sportier modes. I love that of the sport mode. Other than that, I use sport mode only for highway onramps. I would say that at fixed speed on the highway, the mode doesn't matter at all because all the power to move the car is being provided by the thermal engine at the same RPM.

Thanks for all this information on these drive modes! I am a Corolla Hybrid owner, in France. Here is my feedback on the drive modes: - EV: totally agree, only useful to move your car without having the gas engine starting up, especially in underground parking lots. Otherwise, useless. I had some difficulties explaining to a fellow hybrid driver that it was useless to smash his EV button all the time while driving in town: the hybrid system knows what's best, it will manage properly between EV mode and gas, no need to empty the batteries on purpose... - eco: oh my... I find this mode dangerous, because it can be surprising if you need power instantly (eg. in merging traffic) and that you find yourself with that sloth of a car unable to accelerate properly. Thanks for your advice to use it on highways, I will try when I reach cruise speed (btw: 130 km/h here in France). Maybe also useful in for traffic jams? Though I doubt it would make much difference when the car is crawling... - normal: well, the everyday driving mode, as you mention. Smooth yet efficient. - sport: not at ease with this one, because the engine revs up very quickly, it seems like a 'on-off' switch to use the throttle pedal... I had noticed the difference in steering, thanks for confirming. It feels 'sharper' in sport mode. Additionnally to what you said, I find there is more resistance when I lift my foot from the pedal... like it's giving more power, but also taking back more power for regeneration, and more 'engine brake'... which leads me to my suggestion: this Sport mode is very useful for mountain roads (at least European ones...). To me, it is the only situation when I find it relevant. Otherwise, as you mentioned, hybrids are totally NOT racing cars...

@ exactly! Floor the pedal and both ECO and Sport have exactly the same acceleration times. The only thing that changes is the 'feel' of the pedal. In ECO it is very long... you need to press deep before it responds a lot. In Sport the opposite. In Normal the response is more linear. But in all modes, full throttle means full throttle. It accelerate equally fast in all modes when you floor it.
@ianjaspermendoza10252 жыл бұрын
I agree with you mate, eco mode is sometimes unsafe in roundabouts or intersections. It pick up so sluggishly. I think its more practical to use normal mode and just control your pedal to play around EV and Eco on the gauge to be more efficient.
@robfernald3397 Жыл бұрын
@@AHBdV I read on multiple sites but can never confirm from toyota/Lexus that the hybrid batteries push 500v in eco/normal under normal throttle but in sport will push 750v. I may have the exact voltages incorrect but you get what I’m saying, can anyone confirm this? However as you said and I’m guessing for safety reasons under full throttle in any mode gives you all the power the car can give. IMO that should always be the case for Merging & possible life safety scenarios.

As an Australian, I found EV mode most effective when driving from one point on the job site to another. It's not going to get you to the shops, it's not going to get you to nan's house, or the train station, but it will get you from gate A to the food truck and back quite fine. For this reason, I used to call it "golf cart mode."

I live in Bangkok and i drive only in eco mode. i am seriously prioritizing fuel economy because i am running two cars. On highway i use normal mode. Now i have a clear picture why most at time Ev mode is not available. Sometimes when i turn on the engine in the morning, i get a sound from the engine bay, Toyota said is MG2 and that how the system has been designed. The sound last for not over a minute and the whole system goes quiet. The more i understand hybrids more, the more i love them just because of how it waas intelligently designed.

We drive a lot in Germany. Merging into traffic on a German Autobahn, coming from a rastplatz or so, can be pretty difficult when you stay in ECO, you really need to set the car to Power mode. That's until you've merged of course. When we drove in Switzerland with our first Hybrid (a Prius), there was this eery feeling of a sudden complete silence when we drove downhill in the Alps. At first my wife and i thought that there was something wrong with the car, and after checking everything i came to the conclusion that we were just witnessing the brilliance of Toyota. We now have a Lexus NX300h by the way.

In my experience, for the short time I've owned my 2018 Prius, I'm actually getting a bit better mpg in normal mode, compared to in eco. I guess it's cause I'm used to being very gentle on the throttle in order to save fuel, while the lack of throttle response in eco mode, made me use "more throttle than needed", hence getting worse mpg.
@dj31142 жыл бұрын
I've discovered the same. I suspect that "normal" mode enables you to get to speed faster and maintain - pulse and glide. I use the "Hank Hill" method of imagining there is an egg on the gas pedal that I don't want to break. However, when someone is directly behind me, I'll pick it up because they shouldn't be caught behind a gas miser.
@TS84NO2 жыл бұрын
@@dj3114 Yeah, I do the same. It's great to drive gently and get better mpg, but not to a degree wich annoys other drivers :P
@lcq21022 жыл бұрын
Eco mode usually dulls out the responsiveness of the accelerator pedal so it’s easier to accelerate gently. Most of your fuel is spent accelerating. Typically the eco mode also puts the hvac in an eco which helps if you use the AC. But if you’re not using AC, it really only helps you drive more conservatively. There’s no difference to the normal mode in terms of fuel economy.
@TS84NO2 жыл бұрын
@@lcq2102 Yeah.. One advantage I have seen with using Eco mode tho, is that it makes it easier to stay in EV-mode in city/slow driving, as the trottle is less sensitive.
@kalmmonke50372 жыл бұрын
yes eco mode is for people who dont know or care how to drive econmically, computer does guess work assuming driver pushes pedal quickly to speed up quickly then doesnt keep foot steady from being bored, non attentive to driving, so his pedal position changes for no reasson when he should be speeding up and slowing down at a non quick rate and maintaining momentum, for lower tire, brake, oils, fuel cost

Excellent and enjoyable explanation. As a middle-aged "gearhead", I never imagined that I might find myself owning a Prius but I needed a reliable and frugal vehicle. I saw a used 2011Prius for sale and, out of curiosity, I started researching the technology and became so intrigued I bought it. I'm still a "gearhead" though and am absolutely not a typical Prius driver. I spend WAY too much time in Power mode because I just love how much sportier it makes this "eco box" feel to drive. That said, I'm going to start making myself use Normal and even ECO modes more often. Maybe it'll keep me from driving like a maniac. ;)
