A Toyota master diagnostic technician goes over Toyota Hybrid drive modes. What they do, how they work and what's the best one to use.
In this video I cover a topic requested by my awesome viewers. Toyota Hybrid Drive modes. In total there are 4 drive modes in Toyota hybrids as follows:
1-ECO mode : which puts economy over performance or drivability.
2-SPORT, Power or PWR mode : Prioritizes Performance over economy.
3-NORMAL mode : A perfect balance between ECO and SPORT or PWR
4- EV mode : Puts the hybrid system in full electric mode for a very short driving distance. and some conditions that would make EV mode unavailable.
Questions? Comment or email please note that it takes me sometime to get back to you via email but I always will in the end.

I drive with my car in eco in almost 100% of the time. Rare exceptions are when I expect to need to accelerate quick. People are always in such a hurry on the road but sometimes just easing to speed is saving just as much time as speeding. So many times I catch up to those who fly off the light while I’m in eco mode 😂

Once I realized this, I quit speeding in regular driving that isn’t on the interstate. Honestly, I get ahead of people speeding past me and I am more efficient. People simply like to feel the power. That is all there is to it.

Thank you CCN, very informative. I’ve been using mostly Eco and Normal with the odd venture into Sport mode. I do notice that EV isn’t available when the car is cold, I try to back out of the garage on electric only but the engine always starts immediately in the cold weather. Toyota gave me an App that gives me access to all sorts of information about the car, very handy. It also rates my Eco driving performance on each trip! Sometimes I get a 100 score, miracle. There’s one corner on my drive that I like to take quickly...I lose points for “harsh cornering.” This is too much fun.

I tend to use ECO mode in city situations. Speed limits are low due to high density population. It keeps me from speeding. Sport mode is something we sometimes use during long road trips in summer (larger hill climbs, more weight, when there isn't a pandemic :( ), HVAC seems to perform better in this mode. EV mode only when the car needs to move a small bit.

Great video as always! I wanna add something from my expirenice. I drive Prius Prime so I have a real EV mode good for 40 km. ECO MODE ( in Hybrid or EV ) can be used as SNOW mode, when in slippery conditions. Basically an ECO MODE - could be a SNOW MODE as it is easier to control the throttle, especially in EV mode where the torque is available instantly. Just another way to use it

Great video as always. When we bought our 2023 Venza, it had 3 miles on it. The throttle response was slow driving on Eco mode on the first 200-400 miles. Now that I’ve put 1700 miles on it, the throttle response has gotten a lot better on Eco mode. I’m not sure if I’ve simply just gotten used to the Eco mode, or the vehicle just passed its break-in period. I love my Venza. Very comfortable, feels and looks luxurious.

Another fantastically informative video, Thank you! I find my 2019 Rav4 Hybrid chooses EV mode all on its own and it seems to always be at the right time. Going through a drive thru.... as long as it has sufficient battery it switches to EV. No gas burned for the entire 10 minutes going through. Perfect! When I start it in the morning it goes on EV mode for the first .5km of my drive. Even going down the hi-way at posted speed limit (90km/hr) Flat and level it can go into EV mode until I give it more gas or start going up hill. Driving in town it switches back and forth but surprisingly is in EV mode a lot of the time. I'm loving the hybrid version of the Rav4. Thanks again for the great video!

Excellent and enjoyable explanation. As a middle-aged "gearhead", I never imagined that I might find myself owning a Prius but I needed a reliable and frugal vehicle. I saw a used 2011Prius for sale and, out of curiosity, I started researching the technology and became so intrigued I bought it. I'm still a "gearhead" though and am absolutely not a typical Prius driver. I spend WAY too much time in Power mode because I just love how much sportier it makes this "eco box" feel to drive. That said, I'm going to start making myself use Normal and even ECO modes more often. Maybe it'll keep me from driving like a maniac. ;)

I have watched so many of these excellent videos! I just traded in my 2012 Camry hybrid for a new 2023 hybrid. Love the car and vids to keep it running at peak performance! Thank you!

Excellent job! After going through many videos on eco vs normal finally I found what I experienced. Eco= For highway smooth acceleration Normal= Heavy City traffic when your batteries are unable to charge and restarting engine frequently

Bro can u help me out my hybrid says EV not available battery too low what should I do and how
@farhatsam8529
@farhatsam8529 Ай бұрын
@teslagaming9806 That means your battery is less than 50%. If you always drive in highways, this is normal. You hybrid battery will charge when i can (specially in downhills), do not always use the brakes, let it brake and charge the batteries

Thank you for nice explanation. I'm using ECO mode all the time, normal mode kicks ICE more often. I don't like it.

I knew most of that, so I thought I was pretty smart 😂, but then I realized you definitely answered some questions that I think about occasionally while driving our Toyota and Lexus hybrids. Thanks!

as a 10 years Prius owner, I’ll tell that you are exactly right, people thought Eco mode is for city and PWR mode is for highway, many time I found that I have worse performance with the same gas mileage with Eco mode (compare to say PWR mode), and yes leaving it in normal is really just the best of both world. Thank for the good content.

I had a Toyota Corolla Hybrid(current gen) as a rental for 4 days. Done about 250km and ONLY used 8liters of petrol. As I left the petrol station I activated EV Mode, and drove the 2km to the rental lot just using the battery. Was a nice experience Toyota advertised 4.2;/100km I got 4.3l/100km

OMG, thank you for this video. I switched for ECO to normal and the car is so much more fun to drive and maybe by coincidence my mileage also went up (I did increase my tire pressure to what it should be based on coldest recent ambient temperature and gasoline blend changed from winder to summer as I understand)

I have a 2018 Camry Hybrid and most of the time I drive it in Eco mode because I love the Auto Glide Control, and when I need more power which is often I move the gear shifter to the left and it switches to either normal or sport I am not sure which. I wish Auto Glide Control was available in all modes.

I had a 2016 toyota prius II Eco and always put it in power mode. I'm not a super hard accelerator, but I still always had it in power mode and if I needed to speed up fast to get on the freeway, it was great. I drove it 45,000 miles and averaged 62.5 miles per gallon. Always in sport mode.

For the gen 3 the drive mode also affects how close cruise control tries to stick to the target speed. In eco mode you will go faster downhill and slower up hill compared to power mode.

That's concerning to me as an Australian where we have police that love to sit at the bottom of hills and mail you a lovely fine a few weeks later. Hopefully that's a regional tune applied for the US where you have less speed cameras

I recently bought the 2021 corolla cross hybrid, thanks to all the knowledge i got from this channel. I live in Bangkok and i drive only in eco mode. i am seriously prioritizing fuel economy because i am running two cars. On highway i use normal mode. Now i have a clear picture why most at time Ev mode is not available. Sometimes when i turn on the engine in the morning, i get a sound from the engine bay, Toyota said is MG2 and that how the system has been designed. The sound last for not over a minute and the whole system goes quiet. The more i understand hybrids more, the more i love them just because of how it waas intelligently designed.

excellent information, I JUST BOUGHT A 2021 TOYATO VENZA ,and our sales person did not go over any of these. However in one of your other videos about using your VENZA to never jump another car was the best information, we have never had a Hybird so this was very important for us to know thank you
