This all wouldn't be possible without the earlier generations. We continue to build on top of a well-round foundation of engineering and continually conflate that with our technologically advanced age. We will push limits into no other within the next upcoming years.

I had gen3 plug-in and I was doing 100mpg as a taxi (video on my channel). My wife used it for 6 months, taking kids to school and shopping and only put petrol twice! Sadly it crashed(video on my channel) and insurance wrote it off. For me, plug-in and range extender are the best.

@@ciobanuvalentinmail excellent question mate. Hybrid alone is pointless, expensive to buy and really not better than diesel. Plug-in and range extender are much much better. My Citroën C4 1.6Hdi easily get 65 or more mpg, i mean in city, as a taxi. £20 annual tax.

It's fascinating to see the planetary gear which connects the electric motor and the combustion engine to result a hybrid. Mechanical simplicity is efficiency, longevity, and durability. In my opinion this is art and an engineering feat at it's finest.

@@erdemozturk4585 I'm not a Toyota ASE or have engineering background but I'm just curious about how cars work, especially hybrids. Toyota Hybrids are designed to work in parallel. At any given moment, either the ICE or the electric motor can power the wheels independently or both at the same time. what they did is instead of a traditional torque converter and planetary gear transmission assembly on a gas only car, in place are a motor-generator combination that acts as a starter motor, alternator/generator and transmission. Here's the clever part: when starting the car, the smaller generator powers up the ICE until it warms up then shuts it off. When you put in "D", the second, more powerful traction motor then powers the wheels until more power is needed, then the ICE starts again to assist the electric motors. when cruising at city speeds, depending on Toyota models and environmental scenarios, the ICE is shut off and the motors can solely power the car until a certain range is reached and the battery capacity is down to 40%. When cruising at highway speeds, both the ICE and electric motors drive the wheels and the latter charges the battery (to maintain 40-60% capacity). When coasting in "D" the ICE is shut off once again and the generator charges the HV battery (regenerative deceleration) ; or it stays connected to the drivetrain when in "B" so regen is stronger (but at this point, no fuel is consumed) from rotational inertia of the ICE helps the car slow down sooner. Idling keeps the ICE off unless HVAC is being used or if the engine needs warming up again. Power steering, brake master cylinder, AC, and all other accessories are electrically powered so there is no drive belt unless if it's the MKI Prius. This also makes the ICE to run very efficiently even under load. What makes Toyota hybrids very reliable, not only they are well made is the elimination of many moving parts compared to a gas only car. The HV batteries last very long too as the computer system only allows it to have very short charge-discharge rate.

I have a 2013 Ford C-Max (known as the worst year for this vehicle). It uses the exact same hybrid drive system, except paired to a more powerful engine, I'm not the first owner, but I've had the car for a year added 10K to the dial; it had over 105K miles when I bought it. I've had ZERO issues with the car. Even the most unreliable year has been extremely reliable for me. Also, I should mention that maintenance is cheaper than your average car because there are fewer moving parts. No belts to wear out, and fewer fluids to change. Brakes can literally last over 100K before needing replacement if you coast whenever possible and use the regenerative braking system whenever possible. You could literally drive the car and the only time the brake pads will engage is when the car is at a standstill. If that isn't considered low maintenance, I don't know what is. As for affordably: I only paid $8500 for mine and it is *FULLY* loaded with keyless push-to-start, heated leather seats + leather-wrapped interior, a Tesla style panoramic sunroof, backup cam + parking sensors, auto park assist (literally parallel parks the car for you) and a *bangin'* Sony sound system with satellite radio, 11 speakers including 4 woofers, 4 tweeters, a center channel, and 2x 10" subwoofers pumping out 500w each (so over 1100-1200w going to the entire system). In candy blue metallic. For under $10K you can't do much better.

Can't say enough good stuff about my gen 2 Prius. Plenty room even in the back seat. Comfortable on trips loaded up with people and luggage. Love the rear hatch and stow/spare tire/tools compartment. Very smooth handling, quiet, ice cold ac. Idling is incredibly efficient. 40-50 mpg still just crossing 200k miles. Oil/filter and even transaxle case fluid changes are simple, cheap diy. Engine runs smooth as a swiss watch. My mother recently got a newer Avalon and I tried talking her into the hybrid. Now she's pretty regretful. Don't miss out, get a Toyota hybrid and leave the fully electric cars to the one percenters who need any reason available to burn money while status signaling to others. I love how the 2023 Prius looks and, of course, its highly accomplished engineering. I'll get one in 2040 or so when I can afford it. 😂

Im sure its super smart and the most efficient sollution.. but i have drove one long enought to really dislike the lack of feeling that any of the motors are connected to the wheels and the engine doing whatever it wants to develop power instead of linear power delivery... even an electric with no gears at least the motor is directly connected to the wheels and you can feel the direct power feel.. in Toyota? not at all.. i push the pedal and stuff happens and the car goes faster but you dont feel anything going to the wheels as both motors are going throught a VCT

Something that I learned yesterday, is that electric motors are dramatically less efficient when load is less than 50%. Ideally, 75% load is used, as it's most efficient. The more powerful the motor, the more efficient it is at low load, supposedly. I have no idea if this is true, but it's interesting to think about. It means that the hybrid system could be almost always used in tandem with the engine during accelerating, for maximum efficiency. Otherwise, it's actually slightly less efficient, because it takes some energy to make electricity, and to run the motor. A result is a decrease in overall fuel economy, unfortunately. The CVT transmission more than makes up for this, but it could be better, and/or even simpler.
@boyetz88
@boyetz88 2 жыл бұрын
An electrical motor having a load of 50% will still achieve a 75% efficiency compared to an internal combustion engine which has a measly 23% efficiency at the most..
@grantmccoy6739
@grantmccoy6739 2 жыл бұрын
@@boyetz88 that's definitely not true. 23% is low, definitely not it's maximum. It's at least 35%, but could easily be much higher than that. Even though electric motors have a high efficiency turning energy into force, power, etc. they are not quite as efficient as engines, because the power source is being oversupplied, mostly being wasted. At any given time, electricity is being generated, but not being used. This is because electricity cannot merely meet demand. Anything not being used is wasted, grounded, etc. It's not as good as advertised, the comparisons are not thorough enough.

No, engines are much worse at low loads. Electric motors are near 90% efficient from 1% load onwards until they hit around 80% max RPM. Engines have a narrow range of RPM and load where they operate the best. The hybrid system allows the engine to run in its happy spot, and store excess energy in the battery for later use, such as when the engine is turned off.

This is the way every car manufacturing company should go instead of producing fully electric cars that run on energy from coal power plants. Hybrid drive is the solution between conventional combustion engines and fully electric cars that will run on energy cell which are not being made from lithium. ATM, I am driving a RAV4 hybrid, such an amazing car. If you need a get away car, buy a RAV4 hybrid. For a cross over car, the RAV4 handles more like sedan.

The "Power Split Device" it's a dual input planetary drive, right?
@philipmanolas2270
@philipmanolas2270 3 жыл бұрын
Not exactly, its the double energy flow between the planetary and/or the dual motors.

@@philipmanolas2270 thank you for the clarification, so it is a double input planetary gear set then. Double power/torque input from each motor towards one output.

it generates from one motor and power the other to get the desired gear ratio, in and out of the battery, in and out of the engine (engine power and engine braking going downhill if the battery is full).

@@maggiejetson7904 100% nice explained!! 👍👍👍. Apreciated your input 👌. I'm surprised that they make it look as "New Technology" and tried to impress a lot of people... and this is really old... from the late 40's, actually.

I own a 2013 Lexus RX 450h Hybrid that I've owned since new. It now has 145k miles. The only issues I've had is a faulty O2 sensor and a bad taillight. Everything still works like new. It drives and handles like new. The battery still has 95% health and I'm getting a consistent 30MPG on highway trips and averaging 27mpg in the city. I couldn't love this car more! If and when I decide to get a new car it will another Lexus hybrid - no doubt about it.

Toyota is minting money with their hybrid system. And unlike EV'S the hybrid system has proven itself to be reliable and affordable. It's not a surprise that Toyota has been waiting for quite a while to come up with full EV'S. In a world where a lot of people can't benefit from an EV (yet), a hybrid is fantastic. I own a Camry hybrid and it is giving me over 50 mpg 😂
