I gradually remove, clean, derust and treat any fasteners that are rusted but still usable. I treat with phosphoric acid and then after (NOT before) reinstalling them I spray them with clear coat. Spraying them before removes some of the paint as you tighten them. Seems to work pretty well. To derust them I use a mix of mechanical means like wire brushes, die grinders and rotary tools, or chemicals like phosphoric acid or for really cruddy fasteners diluted muriatic acid (then neutralized in baking soda and water--absolutely essential). I HATE rust. Even when it's just ugly to look at, but especially when it endangers the structural integrity of the car. It also makes it hard to make out details on things you might be working on and see what's going on, the way that dirt, grease and grime do. A clean and rust-free car is a good car.

Same it does my head in. We live in a wet coastal part of the UK and the cars around here are rusting away, people just don't look after them and the parts seem to be lower quality now. In my latest video I mentioned at the end about making a bolt bath to renew old bolts so this advice is lovely timing, thankyou!

I have a Hyundai with the exact same problem, the bolts are made of monkey metal and rust and shear if you just look at them the wrong way.

I've got a VW 10 years older after a hard life that has bolts in better condition than this Toyota

2 issues cause rusty bolts // zinc plating is done by dipping ,,the longer dip= thicker coat = more rust resistance // not common but poor metallurgy.

Yes the Zinc dipping thing is a good idea, my stepdad mentioned doing a DIY zinc dip,

I do not know what year the vehicle is but if you can find me a vehicle that does not have that problem it has never been driven & stored in a garage from the day it was bought. The other thing is vehicle manufacturers use the cheapest fasteners as they keep costs down & profits up.They are not in the business of making vehicles to last they would never make money I am not sure what you expect but the reality is metal rusts & you are dealing with the lower end of the manufacturers nothing is going to be gold plated.

@@LesReeves I have a VW Touran 10 years older than my Toyota that has over 260,000 on the clock. Most, if not all the bolts and screws are in better condition than those on the Toyota because they're better quality.

@@stupidscruff Buy a Lexus & you will find the quality & besides it would seem that you are in Europe & vehicles are more prone to rust so all manufacturers use better undercoating to protect against the harsher winters,The other point in the first video is where is the vehicle from seaside or inland ?

@@LesReeves It doesn't matter where the car is or what spec, the bolts shouldn't be rusting that fast. They're sub-par. Don't be making excuses for obvious designed obsolescence! 😎👍
