TRANSFORMERS GEARS Legacy Vs Thrilling 30 Vs MFT - Review

Transformers introduced Gears in 1984 as one of the Autobot Mini-bots. But there have been a few versions since then, and not just official ones from Hasbro and Takara-Tomy. Captain Kyle puts the new Legacy United Gears up against the Generations Thrilling 30 version and the Mech Fan Toys figure as well. And you decide which is better!
Gears is a bit of a cranky Autobot, but apparently part of that comes from a special circuit that not only induces irritability, but was sought by the Decepticons for one of their evil schemes. He was one of the very small mini-bots in 1984, but the Thrilling Thirty increased his size and the new Legacy United Deluxe Gears is much bigger. Even the MFT version stands taller. However, size matters not, Yoda says, so Captain Kyle reviews all three and you get to say which one is better in the comments.

MFT Gears seems to match the G1 cartoon the most. Thrilling 30 Gears is a ALL-NEW ALL-DIFFERENT Gears design, plus he has a little buddy plane gun. But Legacy Gears has G1 cartoon Robot mode with a new modern truck design. I vote for Legacy United Gears as Best.

One of the first things I did with T30 Gears (whose chest is unremolded from Swerve) was paint the relevant parts of his helmet red. I did happen to find Legacy Gears at a mall toy store and am quite happy with him.

@@fatenabu1 Yup. Just a redeco of ER Prime with white thighs, all-blue legs, and removal of the gray stipe in alt-mode. Hasbro is the master of reusing old molds.

I actually forgot Gears even existed until I started rewatching the series a few months ago. Guess he just never stood out like all the other characters from season 1, because I've always remembered everyone else. Anywho, I ordered Legacy Gears, because I want everyone from Season 1, 2, and the movie from the modern SS86/Legacy lines. Got Gears in, and his toy was surprisingly one of my top favourites. He just looks/feels so much like a super retro robot, with awesome articulation. I still really like all of the modern updates to the other characters, but for some reason, this Gears just looks so damn cool.

Legacy is best the chest going on the back of the truck is kinda weird though. I won a badcube gears for free on a Facebook contest but turning it into vehicle mode is a nightmare. Also if you turn his hand so u can see the hole in his hand on the 1 arm in vehicle mode you can put his weapon underneath like a pipe or something

With the MFT one being as close to the animation model as you could probably get in a toy I expected it to come out on top, but then I got my hands on legacy one and yeah, it's Best of 2024 material. I'll keep the MFT one since it's still good, but yeah, Legacy is well worth the multi-decade wait for cartoon-based Gears. The transformation is ingenious while still being quick and easy, the truck is mildly compromised, but it's still cool and that hover mode is way more swooshable than you'd think it should be. Like who even thought Gears and swooshable belonged in the same sentence before this toy? Some of their best design work in years.

If they could have shrunk down the size of the hinge on the doors, maybe making it a diecast part, then that truck mode would have been so much cleaner. I agree he's really good. I love that robot mode on Legacy Gears.

I am very sorry to hear that. A few third-party figures have broken for me. Always disappointing. If you got it recently, you might be able to get a refund or replacement.

MFT is the most aesthetically pleasing and screen accurate. So that is my choice. He will display a lot better

Out of those I like the MTF version the best because it actually has the right alt mode and looks good with minibots from the Prime Wars Trilogy. Personally, I have the Badcube version and I think that's the best choice if you actually care about alt mode scale. Plus he has the welding hand attachment and the personality tape which actually slots in. The only thing I don't like about it is that the arms are a little short. If I come across the Legacy one I may get it just to see if I can swap out the arms with the Badcube version.
