Very useful tutorial thanks man. I'm tech savvy but routers give me a headache. With this method does it disable the WiFi on your ISP router or would you have to go into the settings and disable it yourself would you know? I want this to act as my main router handling everything and shutting my crappy plusnet router off and just leave it as a modem.

If you are on fibre to the cabinet I'd recommend buying an Openreach VDSL modem and replacing the Plusnet router with that. Then plug the Openreach modem into the tp-link and it can be the main router doing the PPPoE. No double-nat that way!

@@freename lovely advice thanks sir. Well I got it working earlier, following your tutorial didn't work for me, I had to put it into router mode, enable DHCP, then turn the wireless off on the plusnet router. Whether or not this is it's ultimate form I don't know but it's reaching the end of my house and it's giving me nearly 40 mb whilst retaining all my home assistant devices without having a breakdown lol Subscribed too man

When i setup like this roaming switching does not work. My mobile device stays connected to the original router and speed drops significantly because of range. To connect the ne AP i have to manually disconnect and reconnect to the the new AP. This works but it is pointless. Are there any settings that can force roam switching?

Hello sir. Thanks for the tutorial. By the way, does this router support speed more than 100Mbps if using as access point with the ethernet cable? I want to know because I have an extender that can work as an access point but it seems only support speed below 100Mbps even when I have 1Gbps internet speed.
@freename

WiFi will never reach gigabit speeds. Depending on what you are using to get onto the wifi (computer, tablet, phone etc.) the limit may be the device you are using and not your access point. See my video here for my experience with the TP Link and what speeds you can get. I've linked to the middle of the video but you might find watching all of the video helps you understand how different each router and device performs. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m2fHkJdpZ8mIaKc&t=609 The speed test server can do 1gbps (see the beginning of the video). My experience with the C50 AC1200 wasn't as good as some other routers I tested in the video.

Nice video! I'm currently trying to set up a WiFi network (5 Ghz) from another TP-Link router (TL-MR 100 4G/LTE) - which in turn is connected to my ISP's router. I'm not familiar with AP mode but ... can it work by patching in the ethernet output of another router and then creating a WiFi network to connect wireless devices? Thank you in advance if you have time to answer!
@freename
@freename 3 жыл бұрын
That sounds like you do want AP mode.. If you have ISP router --> to WAN port of your own router --> then a cable to this new tp-link and you also want it to transmit wifi. The best mode would be the AP mode rather than router mode. In router mode you would have double NAT or possibly triple NAT if your ISP router is also doing NAT.

Maybe using WDS mode but I've no experience of that and can't give you advice. WDS mode _might_ allow you to repeat your existing wifi signal and also use a cable into a computer or console. In normal access point mode you would need a cable going between the TP-Link and your main router. My advice is to work out how to do this. It will be much quicker and more reliable in the future.

Yes. But remember it is a wireless access point only. It isn't a wifi repeater, it needs connecting back to your main router with a cable. You could plug anything else into any of the LAN ports on the tp-link too and they will connect but if you plug just that in and no other cable back to your main router then what you want is a wireless repeater or wifi mesh system using wireless backhaul.

Are you testing the speed plugged in with a cable or on wireless? Wireless will _never_ be as good as wired in. I don't have any test results for being close to the router bit when I was about 2 walls away I got only 15mbps on the WiFi. If you want NAT then just plug it in, don't do these instructions as that turns it into an access point only with no routing.

AP needs a cable. Repeater, WDS or mesh would work without needing a network cable.

I have had a frustrating time with this router. I bought three to standardise my network and noted several things: 1. The english instructions in the router interface are poorly written. I see errors typical of someone who has not had a good education in English. Even in China there are much better people who could do this other than the TP-Link junior engineers. Its just a marker that probably there are other issues too. 2. I notice that the Internet LED stays off no matter what. 3. I notice that if I choose the smart IP address (DHCP) I cannot change the IP addresses. That is OK, but in my mind, If it is an access point, the DHCP should come from the blue WAN port and the other ports would use it. Playing around with the settings after that is confusing. I can't easily use that WAN port, I have to put the uplink (to my LAN) on a yellow port and waste that blue port. 4. What is the reset button for? Is it making the device completely "out of the box"? or partially that (some routers I have known will keep some of the settings). I am about to look at this again after doing a firmware upgrade. Nevertheless, next time I think I'll buy a better brand and pay more. I have had a couple of ASUS fancy routers going for 6 years without an issue. I'll update this in a day or so.
@freename
@freename Ай бұрын
1) Sadly standards are crap for most things these days, not just tp-link. 2) In AP only mode it will be like that. 3) When in DHCP mode you won't be able to select an IP address as you've told it you want it to get it via DHCP. It's in Access Point mode so it isn't doing any routing, it's a plain bridge between WiFi and the ethernet sockets. Data comes in ethernet, goes out wifi, data comes in wifi, goes out ethernet. No firewall or other fancy blocking or decisions. No DHCP server for the clients. Anything that connects just has its DHCP request forwarded onto the LAN and responded to by your main DHCP server. 4) Fully factory reset out of box. [Some ISP provided routers like the tp-link Aginet based routers or Zyxel ISP routers can have a customised factory default].

If you have network cabling in your house back to the main router you can definitely use the router in the video or an old ISP router (with special configuration changes) to turn it into an access point to do WiFi from that location as well. @@ryanwort18 You can always test by changing the name to something different (it doesn't have to be the same, just having it the same means you don't have to manually swap between the networks). In the method I show in the video you will need a cable going from the tp link to your main router. That's going to be the best experience if gaming. Difficult to tell depending on the OS. Google how to find your BSSID on the OS you use. From memory on OSX you hold down Option and press the WiFi icon and it gives you a load of detailed network status. On Windows you go into the wireless properties. Or on Android you can use Aruba Utilities to see which MAC address you are connected to.

You are correct. Two DHCP SERVERS will cause lots of weirdness. I think the setting in the video you are commenting about is if the access point is a DHCP CLIENT, this is fine. (Although may be more sensible to have it on a static IP so you always know what IP it is using).

@@freename Thanks for your fast response. I think I get what you mean, so in my case (using 2 routers behind a modem) I think it would be best to switch both DHCP-modes off, right? That way, if needed, I can reach both routers through the IP's given out by the optic-fiber modem... One more question: Am I right if it would be best to use static channels for both the 2.4 and 5GHz signals? i.e. on the 2.4GHz use channel 1 for the modem, chanel 6 for the 1st router and channel 11 for the 2nd router? @@didgerydoo If you truly have a modem only then it should be a bridge and your ISP provide IPs. They are unlikely to hand out more than one IP. Or your modem is actually in routing mode and giving out 192.168.X or 10.X IPs ? In which case DHCP off for the extenders is fine. Static WiFi channels are a good idea. On 2.4GHz the only non overlapping and "worldwide" channels would be 1, 6 and 11. Unsure on 5GHz but setting statically is a good idea. And look up "DFS channels" and try to avoid using those.

Hi mate, how did you find out the dhcp add of the tp link after you plugged it into the main router?
@freename
@freename 3 жыл бұрын
I would either use wireshark on a computer on the same wired network and filter by port 68 and port 67 for the dhcp traffic.. or, more likely, just looked in the devices / DHCP table of my main router :)

No. It's not a WiFi repeater. It will always need a wire back to your main router. (Though some people say it's been possible to "client bridge" using WDS mode.)

Not sure you can do wireless repeating. You can use it as a wired access point. Some people have said that they enable WDS and it has then worked as a repeater. Google Translate: No estoy seguro de que pueda hacer la repetición inalámbrica. Puede usarlo como un punto de acceso con cable. Algunas personas han dicho que habilitan WDS y luego funcionó como un repetidor.

Thanks for the great tutorial! I have a question, by making the tp archer an access point, we can still connect to the router wifi as normally done before right? It doesnt disable the router if im correct? My router will be in bedroom and a long Ethernet will connect the tp link in the living room. So half the house can connect to the router whilst the tp link side connects to tp link. Is this correct? If so when moving around will it automatically switch to the strongest signal lets say if you are going back and forth the 2 sides of the house. Thanks!
@freename
@freename 3 жыл бұрын
Your original router will still continue to function as normal (as long as the IP of the new TP Link does not collide with the IP address of your original router.) As long as you use the same SSID (wifi name) and password settings on both the router and the TP link you should roam automatically without having to select a new network when you move to the other side of the house.

Is there any way I can alter the setting so that I log into the router and it selects which band to use? @@khxnzy4270 Only with a cable running between the two. What you need otherwise would be either power line network kit that uses your mains wiring or a wireless repeater / mesh system. Both have their intermittency and annoyances. Wifi repeating can be awful especially if you get really cheap equipment. Power line network sometimes doesn't work at all.. but should be ok if it works but nowhere near as good for gaming as a full ethernet cable to your router.
