That's pretty much exactly the same conclusion that I had. TP-Link summary: quality of hardware: extremely high, quality of software: extremely high, warranty and support: extremely good, features: they have a wide range of devices, with the features you would expect of industrial grade devices, price: pretty sharp ! which makes them accessible for even small companies, e.g. sole-proprietors or freelancers, ... The bottom line, they deliver what they promise, at a sharp price. I bought 4 devices of them in the last year, and all of them were exactly what I was looking for. And I am the kind of guy that compares device specs and reviews for months before I actually buy something. I am really aiming for 100% uptime, high throughput, with no worries. And that is exactly what their devices have done for me any my business.

O wow, I literally had the exact opposite experience. We had about a dozen units for residential use, very low bandwidth needs (just connecting a handscanner back to a central site that ran the server for all the sites). We had TPLink VPN routers (600's?). What. A. Piece. Of. Garbage. They supposedly could handle 2 WANs. That was false. They could handle several hundred megabytes of throughput. That was false. They were secure and provided "enterprise grade VPN". That was only true for about 3 days in a row, after which we had to reset them remotely, using a remote client at each site. TPLink is low-grade garbage, especially when much more reliable systems from Ruckus and Meraki-Go are available. Heck, we ran 30+ sites with a couple hundred UniFi devices (not their routers, though!), and they worked great. Only time they went "down" was when we upgraded the firmware or someone drunk hit a telephone pole. Cost more, but we got that $$$ back in productivity and not losing sleep.

I'm watching videos to get an idea of what the interfaces look like to help me decide between a TP Link Omada system with a ER8411 + TL-SG3210XHP-M2 or a Unifi system with a UDM-Pro-SE + USW-Enterprise-24-PoE for a 2.5Gbps home network, and your comment about 100meg and gigabit internet service really caught me off guard! The ISP I work for has been offering gigabit home internet since before the USG launched, and we actually stopped offering 100Mbps internet service in 2020; the slowest we now offer is 250Mbps!

One advantage of a command line interface is that it makes documenting a configuration more straightforward. Plus, you can use a configuration manager like Ansible to manage devices with a command line interface so that it's no more time consuming to configure 1000 boxes than it is to configure 1. I agree that a GUI is nice for fooling around, though.

First of all, I want to thank you for the enormous kindness you have done in providing this video. Very, very much made me interested in this equipment. I was looking forward to getting an EdgeRoute from Ubiquiti, but I needed something more complete. Including that it could provide distinct subnets between ports and VLANs. I need more details. How is web filtering control carried out? Is there a layer of malware and intrusion detection? I'm really close to deciding on this one.

Mentioning the user limitation: Your looking at the TP-Link ER605 which max's at • 20 IPsec VPN Tunnels but their ER7206 will handle 5x that at • 100 IPSec VPN Tunnels. This actually varies with the VPN protocol ... Lookup: compare ER605 & ER7206 ...

Here in the Netherlands we use Fortygate, which can do more than Unifi and TP-link. Only this one is a bit more expensive, you should think more for a small company at € 300,-- for 100-200 user, around €800,-- above the 250 user, €2800,--. You have multiple ports with Gbit support. can also be applied directly to the fiber.

For a project a few years ago I installed some TP Link TL-ER6120 routers and one Draytek Vigor 2960. The Draytek failed earlier on this year while I've not had a single problem with any of the TP Link routers.

Will agree with one thing, the reporting of PFSense really does suck. The ntopng package mostly works, but lacks on the free version. Also the USG-3 runs Gigabit if you don't turn on IPS/IDS, if you just want to see what your clients are using for traffic it will route Gigabit with DPS on. Verizon FIOS gigabit up and down on my end. Back to using an SG-3100 for now. Love TP-Link, wouldn't use it outside of the home. Been using Ubiquiti gear for many years in both home and commercial installations.

Why would you not use it the same way you use Ubiquity gear? From my tests it's better than Ubiquity, which is why I have no unify gear at all any more.

Wow so the Omada interface definitely shows more information than the direct GUI! What I would love to know is the % uptime for each WAN (when being used in multi-wan mode). Is this info shown anywhere? Thanks!

I have TP-Link equipment but there are places in the states that Frown on the use of Broadband over Mains so I think if the mains cables are routed through steel cable conduits which are grounded then interference should not radiate.

Wonderfully explained, it takes time and patience to understand the product beyond the data sheets. And yes for corporates cli is much easier to deploy and maintain but for small and medium businesses and for home it's a hassle. I really appreciate the time taken by you to give the essence of different technologies to the public. Keep up the good work, also try to use Cisco small business products and utms like sophos and fortigate etc as they are much more useful in these scenarios.

TP link is good, just might of skimped on capacitors like most budget computer companies; case by case solution but assuming you have a computer that supports iommu always running, pass a network card and virtualize! less one device, and pfsense!

Hey Unkyjoe. Great video. I needed a router to replace the built in firewall in my Xfinity gateway, so after a couple of quick reviews and review videos, I snatched one off Amazon for ~$70 (tax included) and it should be here later tonight. That Xfinity gateway is SUCH a piece of garbage. They've disabled SO many features on it that I can't even setup remote access to my unRAID server properly like I had it at our old house with gigabit fiber (gosh I miss my fiber... and it's only been 2 weeks). Anyhoo... rant over. The previous home owner installed Ubiquiti access points in the house (2 of them at opposite ends of the house). Here's my question, can I use the TP-Link TL-R605 and Omada software to configure and use the Ubiquiti APs, or do you know will I still need to use the UniFi Controller docker in unRAID for that? Thanks in advance for your reply and for a great video. Subscribing and liking.

you will still need the sep controller for Unifi, so yeah I would do it in docker or run as a windows service, either way. Thanks for watching!

Great review! One question that came to mind: does this router support acting as an OpenVPN Client? Currently I use Untangle as my NGFW solution, and it supports OpenVPN as either a server and/or a client. Would I be able to upload a .ovpn file to this TP-Link router and have it connect back to my Untangle OpenVPN server as a client?

These are all home routers. They get the job done but are not very efficient or secure. If you want something higher end you have to get a professional router.

Thanks for the video. I have recently invested in a bit of Omada-compatible gear from TP-Link. Everything is working great but for the life of me, I have never been able to get the router to be adopted. I have contacted TP-Link support and they have even logged onto my controller and they say they can see what the issue is. I'm sure it has something to do with IP address ranges and or subnets but my understanding of such matters is not great. Can you perhaps offer any direction based on your learnings? TIA
