TP-Link M5350 - mobile wifi / mifi device. Review, web interface and comments

This is a handy little device I have in my bag which I use when on the move. It comes unlocked and you can use it anywhere they have a 3G network.
We look at the device, talk about the specifications, have a look at the box, look at power options.
I also open up the web interface and we briefly look at the configuration options.

did you experience any issuses when trying to connect it to the interneton a 3 sim, as i cannot connect it on an o2 sim?

3 worked OK for me, I also use Vodafone in the UK and have used my device abroad in Egypt without issues. I think it's fairly network-transparent. Worth logging into the Web UI and seeing if you have any text messages. Also make sure you have updated the firmware. Good luck! AM

so if you're on post paid plan how this device works? will it consume your data plan or will it serve like a router.?

+jersey devil Hi! This device is basically a wireless router connected through the phone 3g network via the inserted sim card to the internet. Any data or information downloaded from the internet is subject to whatever plan you are using, so yes it consumes your data!. Only if you are sharing information between different devices on your network using the M5350 as a router (e.g. your phone to your tablet while both are connected to the M5350) then this should not incur any data charge. Hello I need your help about my device. Whenever it's on idle mode everything except for the network connectivity (3G logo and the signal bars) is disabled. Which in turn keeps my device hot and the battery discharging. I know it should disable as my mom had the same device back in my hometown that I used. Which was the reason why I bought the same device in the first place. But again there's some kind of glitch with the Idle feature on my new device. Please help

Hi Jeremy, I have noticed my device getting hot do I tend to keep it somewhere who ventilated but haven't really had any crashes. As long as it is only warm to the touch I can't imagine it will come to much harm. Have you updated to the latest firmware? This might help. AM

Rocky Lagos Thats strange, the "Network status" page on the WebUI might help explain what's happening. Trying logging into it and looking (the default IP address is 192.168.0.1). The small globe on the OLED screen usually indicates a successful network connection. GL! AM

I’m looking to get one along with a sim only deal, I’m going to be using a very high amount of data- so looking to get all I can eat data- but I’m not sure about what sim would work. collapsar27 Not sure, sorry, when I have gone abroad I have just bought a SIM for a local network at the airport. Whether roaming work will probably depend on the contract you have with your provider. Watch out for roaming charges though!

My M5350 lasts 3-4 hours on the battery, I have a mobile battery bank which I have used in the past to keep it going longer. AM

I don't think so on the M5350, you definitely can on newer units like the M7350, I no longer use my M5350 but I checked the emulator for the (slightly different) M5250 and there is no function for port forwarding. AM

+leewolf karl magaro Hi leewolf, I am sorry I don't have those other 2 devices, the M5350 does not support 4G though so depending on your region / location it might not be a bad idea to get a 4G compatible device for more 'future proofing' AM

Hello, could u help me a bit.. I just bought this device, turned on the wifi on my smartphone and logged in to IP 192.168.0.1/ (which automatically obtained by my smartphone ) but i couldn't get an internet access even though i have configured the settings accordingly, when i hit 'connect' it's just trying to connect but then it got disconnected.. Can u help me please..

+Splitting Headache As long as you have a suitable data SIM installed in the M5350 then the default settings should work OK and you shouldn't need to log into the webUI. On your device just connect to the devices wifi network as normal, mine is called TP-LINK_M5_3168EB. The default wifi password for connecting to the device is on a sticker on the inside of the case back, mine is just a random number. Good luck! AM

Sure thing bro, you can reset the m5350 to its default settings - With M5350 powered on, use a pin to press the RESET button in the interior panel.You can then use the quick start guide to set it up again, I have linked the tp-link support page in the show notes. AM

In general, a new SIM with a different number will have to be paid for separately either pre-paid (PAYG) or by monthly charge. If you want to use the data under a current contract you would either have to talk to your operator about getting an additional SIM (they usually charge for this) or swap out your phone SIM into the unit - obviously if you do the latter you will no longer receive calls because the M5350 can't take and receive them. GL! AM
