I don't ever remember them using an actual published popular song. Ride Like The Wind by Christopher Cross was in the showcase and there was a pretty good edit on one of the parts. The other one was a little choppy, but I imagine they used a razor blade cut edit. It was really interesting at that time that the highest winner was over $39,000 up to that point in time. Thank you for sharing.

They did this a LOT way back when, up till at least 1991 I think (they used Madonna songs over the credits each day of the 20th season premiere week). If you only watched after that (which I did admittedly too, being born in 1987), you'd not know of that, but it was very commonplace during this period and before. Celebration by Kool and the Gang was used a couple years earlier to close a 10th anniversary show I believe as another example.

When I saw "biggest winner" I had a suspicion that Golden Road would be involved. Turned out I was right.

That should've been bells and clangs, at least after Bob announced Biggest Winner -- a graphic might not have hurt either in Post for the occasion. Herring would not hold the record long, as Diana Brownfield broke the record, and the $40,000 barrier, early the following season.

How much would you have guessed on that Boat Showcase? (I would have guessed $12,500)

That would put him over the then-hard winnings cap of $50,000 at the time, he would have to donate some of his winnings.

The average citizen has a hard enough time paying the taxes on items they win on game shows. Especially if they're California residents. On an Army Captain's salary, it would have been very difficult even if he was in Base Housing. He and his wife would have had to discuss what they really wanted to keep, which would have probably been less than half of the prizes.

He would only do that if the contestant had won the $ ($1,000) and was resetting it for the Bonus Spin.
