I have learned a great deal about man-packs, which are just what I need since I enjoy NPOTA, POTA and SOTA work as well as the West Palm Beach Amateur Radio Group’s weekend excursions-Radio under the spreading Oakes. So since one of our younger members introduced me to the frame plus man-packs, I have acquired Armoloq rails for my FT-870. I bought the bag from Optics Planet. The battery is a 12v. 12 AH deep discharge Lioh, a gift from a big battery dealer. I just finish rejuvenating it (back from near death) after a long period of inactivity. BTW, Seth at Amoloq is the best: his work is elegant, is service is first rate, and he built the business from scratch. Highly recommend Armoloq! I like your setups. They remind me of the World War II manpacks. This gives you the opportunity to set up quickly in an emergency. It takes me about 10 minutes to set up for HF. By the way, I like the interruptions. Makes the video more realistic.

Thank you. I owe this setup style to Seth from ARMOLOQ. He was former military and wanted to run his radio within commo windows. He reached out after noticing that I had a similar commo window approach while on summit or in the back country. Also, I am really glad you enjoyed that bit of reality mid way through the video. When I first got my 857 I wanted to build one of those big man pack frames from ebay. In my opinion these frames seem better. My 857 is my backup rig.

The bigger man pack setups built on the ALICE pack frames look cool and would be fun to build, but this setup feels cleaner, lighter and has worked well in the field.

The 857 is such a great radio too bad they discontinued I won't get rid of mine. I actually prefer it to the 891 I think it's easier to use atleast for me but I do have more time on it. Also for a 100 watt radio it's compact and a shack in the box with 50 watts on 2m and 20 watts on 70cm makes for a complete package. Hopefully there is a replacement in the works. Great setup you have and great review.

I like your setup. I'm currently using a Gator box which it very big and heavy. I am looking for something more portable for POTA and SOTA. I am also currently using a Chameleon MPAS2 which I need to condense maybe to a Tactical Delta loop or wire antenna. I think the Tactical delta loop would be more shoot and scoot capable than a wire in a tree. Also don't let life's inconveniences take so much control of your life. Their only temporary.

@@TheTechPrepper I currently use my 891 for SOTA and a few portable operations. I use a homebrew battery pack like the ones that OH8STN made on his channel - they work great! I have the Portable Zero rails on mine, and currently just use a regular backpack so I'm always open to better suggestions. I like the Armorloq rails but wish they were a little cheaper!

I agree about being hard on gear. I was the RTO and jumping out of the APC (before the Bradley) with my Ranger ruck in hand tossing everything on the ground then gearing up. The wife says I’m to ruff on stuff, I feel if it breaks with me using it it isn’t worth having.

Recently found your channel. Great video and content! Similar to you, I started with the Ft-817 and used it for years. Great QRP shack in a box with the built in battery. I own the FT-857D too, and have been wanting to get into SOTA/POTA. The quick deploy man pack concept with that pack and frame really appeals to me for all the same reasons as you. So just reached out to Seth for a purchase. Also picked up the Xiegu G90 (20 watt) rig...and may ask Seth if he could make a cage for that little rig. There are several excellent videos on the FT-857D, but I may do a detailed video as I gain more experience with it. I will be walking through all the digital settings and few things I’ve learned about the 857D for 2m packet and HF digital modes. This will be in the next video when we take on the end-to-end Pi build. As for programming repeaters and a simplex frequencies, I perform all those manually even though I have the programming cable.

I've searched and searched trying to find a kit that would fit my requirements and while there's a ton, you have the most comprehensive overview using high quality bits. Only item I wasn't sure on, which pouch did you go with for the LifePo battery? I found the side admin pouch, but haven't been able to find the proper size for the battery setup.

I'm ordering one of those TPA frames for an 891. I like the pack, but would like a bag with a top cover similar to the bag that you were running with the 817 in a prior video to help keep it protected to some degree from the elements. Any suggestions?

The PRC-117G is the only bag that I know of that works perfectly. The ARMOLOQ owner and I have been talking about designing a joint bag, but we're just in the concepting phase.

Hey Tech Prepper I love your videos. I copied ur setup with an ft857 and a tpa packframe plus a signals stick antenna. I have a small problem where the swr of the radio is high on 2 meters when i transmit. But the Swr drops a little when I place my hand on the frame of the TPA frame. I wonder if you could give me some advice on what is going on? I am a quite new ham sorry if this question is dumb.

Not a dumb question. Check out my current instagram post. Search for thetechprepper. Basically, put a couple of ferrite beads on the jumper cable and a small ground wire. You'll get your SWR under 1.5 to 1. You're missing half the antenna when running a whip. This is why I usually use a J-pole with the manpack.

Great video and very nice concept. One big question that jumps out at me with the 857 is airflow... the radio has a fan in it and blows out the back taking air in thru the vents around the control head. How does this pack handle airflow? My first thought when seeing this is radio will be running pretty hot after a time (I do understand that you're NOT running full power, etc.). Also, the 857 is meant for 'mobile' (read 'vehicular' ... not being critcal but pointing out the expected power usage environment i.e. QRO vs. QRP, etc.) comms and is a bit of a pig when it comes to power so hence the 1.5 hours of battery life on your 4.5AH. You can likely take a page from OH8STN's power experiments and augment a slightly larger 6.0Ah battery with a foldable solar panel and Genasun (or other suitable) charge controller. But power options can be flexible... my main question is the heat management of the radio sitting inside the bag?🤔

I get engine noises and such from my neighbors as well, although my other hobbies involved hot rods and motor sports. Sometimes my neighbors play what seems like bass boosted music after 2200. The dog interference would drive me nuts though. Unless I missed something, water might be a good addition.

Congratulations on your upgrade, Warren! You’re going to enjoy HF. The FT-857D was incredibly difficult to find and the prices have gone through the roof on the secondary market ever since Yaesu discontinued the radio. I was lucky that a viewer sold me one for $1000 USD which included the ATAS-120 antenna. The FT-891 is a much more modern rig with much better receive quality. I’m only preferring the FT-857 at the moment since I’m heavily into 2m packet and need more power than my FT-818. What kind of modes and bands are you interested in?

Don’t underestimate what you can do at QRP levels. I’ve made a number of contacts over 5,000 miles away in the FT-818 with simple wire antennas.

Thanks. It's the PRC/117G bag from High Ground Gear. Occasionally, some of the colors go on sale for about half price. Tactical Tailor also has a similar model, but I have never used it.

Have you seen any way to mount the head to your car in an elegant way? There is no 1/2-20 thread. How do people mount this to the car? thx.

I have not, but I've never really researched it. I have the separation kit, but never used it. My approach is anything but elegant as it's deployed in the manpack configuration. The radio either sits on the floor or rides shotgun.

You can get a BNC-to-SO-239 adapter. I keep those with the bag in an Altoids tin. I run lots of antennas, but my go-to is the PackTenna Mini EFHW for 20m/40m.

I have not tried an HF whip with this setup. There are surplus military and commercial manpack style whip antennas on the market that should be able to handle your power requirements. For example, I came across a pedestrian antenna from Super Antenna while doing a quick search. newsuperantenna.com/MP1RP/. You may want to check the HFpack on the Google IO group as this question seems like a question perfect for that group.

I plan on using my FT-891 in the field and in the shack. In your opinion, will the pack frame allow you to use the radio on the desktop? In other words, does it make the radio too long to be usable sitting on a desk? Thanks!!

In my opinion, it sits too high when oriented vertically. It's really difficult to see the display and use the controls while seated at a standard heat desk. It works great in the field though especially if you run it in the PRC/117G radio pouch.

@@ErikAtTheW I have my FT-891 with the TPA pack frame sitting on my desk in a horizontal configuration now. The two relocation mounts are used as feet and work well enough for easy access to the controls. However, when on the desk, I run the coax from the antenna connector on the back of the radio. I don't take my FT-891 portable anymore as it is pain to put back into the radio pouch. I also need to remove the relocation mounts from the bottom of the unit to the top. It's really a pain switching between this configuration when going from a portable operation to use in the shack. Honestly, I see little value and usability issues when using the pack frame in the shack. I absolutely love the pack frame, but it is really designed for vertical use in the field.

Or if purchased, a link to them please? And what for device in the middle between the Pi and the 857D (if any) like a MiniProSC , Signalink, or M-Link U5 device? Did you ever figure out to record your QSOs? I noticed that when you record from the speaker jack from the control face, you can hear the Tx, but it's attenuated a lot.

I assume this would not be the setup for running an MPAS 2.0 antenna. There any packs you'd suggest for such a setup.

This manpack works with any HF/50/VHF/UHF antenna, including the MPAS 2.0. You just need to connect the feed line. I typically use wire antennas with this system when operating HF.

It seems you have a Yaesu MH-59A8J mic? If you do, you can change the band on the mic.

Yes, I have that mic. It’s a new addition and works great especially for changing bands. I wanted to point out the only issue I’ve found with the TPA pack frame. If you don’t have that mic, it can take a little practice to access the band up/down buttons through the frame.

@@frankwc0o I agree, the 857D is a great and would benefit from some modern features (like DSP and waterfall). The 991A seems like their attempt at an all band, all mode radio with more power and some modern features, but it's just too big for the field.

It's probably time for me to throw a thermometer in there. Thanks for the reminder. I've never noticed a real problem. I use the radio in this configuration for a weekly net that runs about 80-90 minutes with 20/80% (TX/RX) and have not really noticed significant heat build up. In the field, I rarely operate more than 20-25 minutes. I guess fully duty cycle digital modes could be a problem. One last thing, I have been considering designing a similar bag where the bottom third is a mesh material with a vertical strip of velcro to allow the removal of an outer canvas material while operating.

The 4.5A LiFePO battery from Bioenno. The battery and the Pi with all the cables fit nicely in that front admin pouch. I carry a second in the backpack.

The length of the frames is by design. It's needed to allow for an appropriate bend radius of the coax cable on the rear so that it does not compromise the integrity of the cable.

No. It's just the pouch. Bags are expensive to manufacture if they are not Chinese crap. I actually attempted to get into the bag business and designed (over 10 months) and produced ~150 bags last year for the FT-857D and FT-818ND. They were designed by me, used American materials, and where hand made by a local artisan. My bags were $300 USD. I had to shutdown my business because no one wants to pay for quality. Get into the bag business and let me know how much you would charge. The margins are razor thin so I got out of the business. Enjoy supporting China.

@@TheTechPrepper The typical consumer like me DONT NEED an Army-Proof-Kevlar-Covered pouch so whoever wants to go in to that business NEEDS to source materials that the consumer can afford. Makes absolutely no sense to put a $300 radio on a $300 bag to go to a park and do POTA or prepping. We are not going to enjoy radio at Gaza in the middle of crossfire. Its way cheaper go the Pelican case route. I dont enjoy anything, as I understand the struggles of make a business, MY WALLET enjoy buying what we can afford. Prepping CAN"T be only for the Elite with unlimited funding. Similar bags from China are in the $40-$60 range, from that to $300 its a huuuuuuuuge difference. Im ok to pay $100-$150 for a good bag but $300 is quite absurd as well, oh wait, not a bag, a pouch. We all know where this country is heading and we all know that venture in a business like that makes no sense, I'm sorry you didn't realized my friend, lesson learned. Thank the past and current administration. This country is currently designed to don't produce anything and buy everything from China. Always remember, there is a difference between "I don't want to support" vs "I can't afford to support". Nothing personal, I enjoy what you do its just that those non sense prices made me jump out of my chair.

Please don't run full power on the 857 when you are working that small whip when it is in your lap. You don't need to be irradiating your body with unnessicary RF. 10 watts is my personal limit and I try to keep the radiating element at least 3 feet from me.

Only american preper can use 1Amp RX radio, not thinking about cooling, and than use mh-59 which is almost useless on HF. Eh bro, you evidently have the sense for buying good things, but use them totally wrong. All those staf you chose very well. I love the frame, bag is excelent...next time, just try think like (i need use this maybe 2 or more days, after tornado, huricane, tsunami) I think i was see you with 817 or 818, learn how to use this radio, for preping it is ultimate tool. I have two 857 the first is 13 years old, second i was buy before 14 days. Yaesu dont change a lot this TRX, i must do almost all this mods even on the new version. Sorry for my ENG, in school i must learn Russian. :D

I appreciate all the tips. I didn't realize the MH-59 was producing RFI. I bought it so that I could have a DTMF keypad for Autopatch and for ease of frequency entry on 2m/440. I'll look into the mods you suggested as anything that improves my HF communication capabilities is worth the investment. I appreciate the comment and view. 73
