TPiR 1/27/11: Goodbye Greco

Watch out for the fake showcase, Greco! And the classic clips! And cake!
Today would be a good day to check out the full credits on CBS.com when it goes up, methinks.
This was also a show where the three games she mainly created were all in the second half: Pick-a-Pair, Line 'Em Up, and Secret X. It came out interesting since Master Key was in the first half, making this the first double SP show since Bob on 4/16/09.

I think despite what anyone feels about Drew as the host (I think he's done well thus far), you can tell he loves the contestants and the staff. Look at how he reacts when a member of the staff leaves. He does and on-air tribute and usually cries. The guy is a class act.

@Willsatx Drew isn't any kind of producer, unlike Bob, so he doesn't have that kind of authority. And also, Rich Fields has said that he wasn't fired, his contract ran out and they decided to go in a different direction with the announcer.

@@Willsatx It was Mike Richards that dismissed them along with Brandi (yes, the same Mike Richards who didn't last very long as host of Jeopardy), he wanted as many traces of the Barker era eradicated so he could take the show in a "new direction". A story says that Drew didn't even know that Rich got let go until after he got back from the World Cup in South Africa

It's not shown here but Secret X, the game she personally created in the 1970s, was the final pricing game played on her last show, which was also a tribute to her and recognized by those who have followed the show over the years.

Kathy Greco has been one of the original staff of “The Price Is Right” since 1975 when she did the first hour long show while Bob Barker was still around at the time. She did an outstanding job for this great “One of a Kind Love Affair” show to quote from the Spinners’ song. Roger Dobkowitz is the last original staff on board and he has been doing the show for a very long time. You might see him in many of the episodes that Roger appeared, it’s on KZbin.

It seems like no one will ever forgive Mike Richards, and because of that, everyone automatically blames him for any departure. I loved Rich Fields as much as the next guy, but I'm sure Richards had some reason for letting him go, and besides, George Gray isn't exactly a bad announcer himself. This was years ago; it's time for everyone to move on. Considering that the show is still immensely popular and that they've made some nice changes to the show, Richards must be doing something right.

All I can say is that Kathy will be missed big time! For a second, I thought it was set up lol, in the sense that they would want someone to win her showcase, but then I realized that they couldn't tell both contestants the price of one showcase. @WayoshiM "Small Products" are such things in the price range of $10 to approximately $200. They cover such things as a mop, sandwich maker, ipod carrying case, smoothie blender. Not to be confused with "grocery products", SP's are the things you need to guess the price of for games such as Cliff Hangers, Bonus Game, 1/2 Off, and Shell Game.

no matter what happens, TPIR is iconic, its a staple in American Game Shows. TPIR is never gonna get cancelled, CBS doesn't have the balls to cancel it. If they did, then any other channel would pick it up in a heartbeat and still do it from studio 33, guaranteed. Lets hit season 40 first though

In 1978, she was Kathy McDonald. She got married to a guy named Greco in either the '80s or '90s, and she's been known as Kathy Greco ever since.

Frank Greco to be exact. He actually appeared once on the Price is Right when they were bidding on a pair of golf clubs (he is a professional golfer).

@WayoshiM Yeah, I know. So many of the originals are now gone. What really surprised me was how Mike Richards tried to cover up Greco's departure so that he could keep his reputation. Same goes with Lanisha Cole (who was also fired by Richards). Her departure was never announced, largely because Richards didn't want people to know she was fired due to her race.

Ah Greco... how we are going to miss you. When I saw this air... I was wondering about a surprise appearance from Bob Barker would happen. Would have been a great touch, but alas it didn't come into being. At least the cake wasn't a lie (or a prank for that matter like the showcase)!

Hold your horses! They did have double SP shows before. The Halloween episode of last season had "Cliff Hangers" and "Plinko" in the same epiosde, and then was the New Year's Eve episode this year, that had "Plinko" and "Rat Race" in the same show.

@WayoshiM It was a rumor that spread on TPIR's facebook page, as well as a Wheel of Fortune petition page like 3 or 4 months ago. I was disappointed when I heard this. Her dismissal was unknown, but a number of people believe she was fired due to her race.

Too bad they couldn't have done something for Roger Dobkowitz, the former producer. When Bob Barker retired, he was the last person left from day 1. There was a showcase from sometime in the 90s dedicated to him. I forget all of what was in it, but included as a bonus was a copy of his college thesis about game shows. He sent a copy of it to Mark Goodson. Because of that, that's how he got his start at Goodson-Todman.
