There's a lot of 3D artist who share their shaders and stylizes models using blender for free. You don't really need to do anything other than tweaking here and there. I've been using blender from my backgrounds for years. There's channels like Tadayoshi CG, CG Dash, Tawan Sunflower etc who has tutorials and shaders on KZbin.

Thank you for giving a proper tutorial on how to make backgrounds quickly without telling people to use an AI-generated image. At first I was a little worried that the video was going to end up that way, but your dedication to LEARNING art reminded me that you wouldn't rely on AI-generated images, much less tell others to rely on it. Your improvement is seriously incredible and you've inspired me to give backgrounds a proper shot!

A lot of the hand drawn models you see, are actually taken from sites like acon3d. it's made by anime style graphic designers, for anime style graphic designers. I recommend downloading free models from acon, sketchup warehouse and sketchfab, importing them into sketchup/abler/blender/csp, then using whatever methods you like to touch up filters.

If you use PS, I highly recommend playing around with the camera raw filters > details. It's one of the quickest ways to nudge photos or 3D renders towards looking 2D. After I'll usually use any combo of paint daubs from the filter gallery, layer modes, and adjustment layers. This was the method I used to create my VN backgrounds. Another important factor to using photos or 3D well in 2D drawing is lighting and size of the photo or render. The better my lighting in photos/3D renders, the less I found I needed to do to get them to where I wanted. For size, I tried to find photos/do 3D renders double the size of my canvas.
@041able17 сағат бұрын
That was great! I think that the best way to use blender is using just as a base for photos, and not the entire render process, unless you really know how to use blender and how to transform photos in 3d( yes, it's possible and fast once you know how). But, my personal choice is just paint over, with brush strokes or whatever you got. Yes, it's harder, but it has the most beautiful results.

When i got new idea i'll go to Pinterest first and looking for a background art that fit with my idea the most and draw my idea base on that background more so it fit in with the background quite perfectly when i add the background in (traditional is the same but i trace the background on the paper instead of add the background in like digital, work most of the time for me but i don't know about you and it took me quite much time try to looking for a background that fit in) That's my small personal tip thanks for reading this!

There is also less demanding option of 3d Background which gives you control over modeling, cameras and color Sketchup in my opinion is a pretty beginner friendly program, although its paid, the free web version is surprisingly pretty advanced and has all the essentials to make backgrounds. Although making organic stuff in sketchup is doable, it's pretty challenging to do compared to making it in Blender, cuz sketchup is mostly geometric in nature with architectural modeling in mind. However there are 3rd party models made by people already you can import into your scene and there's quite a lot of them, but you might need to read its terms of use. 2nd program pairs with sketchup, it's called D5 Render. D5 Render is a real time rendering program and unfortunately you need a somewhat beefy pc to run it. D5 can sync directly with sketchup if you have the Sketchup paid version, where it displays real time updates in D5 while you're doing stuff in sketchup Although you can also just import the Sketchup models in blender but D5 is a bit less a pain in ass to use

Another think you can do is photo mashing for a more sureal vibe , but still even then you can make extremely pretty scenes I use it a lot in my work as a base and render on top if it to help with composition and textures , depending on the vibes i want to create i just leave the photos as is for more sureal dreamlike vibes

@momob4276Ай бұрын
Amazing video especially since most artists shy away from backgrounds BUT I will add my two A-hole opinions. 1. Backgrounds using just photos with filters only work if your art is of a high skill. If your character art is not very skilled then the realistic backgrounds even if it's blurred, will emphasize low skill character art and will make everything look inconsistent and look off. 2. The shortcuts mentioned are best used alongside a strong art skills to hand draw or touch up the background with brushes so it blends with your art style. A lot of pro artists that have detailed backgrounds you can see even if they used some kind of 3d or photo base they did hand draw or lineart some parts of it themselves. But regardless, just know using a base for a background is very normalized and is not cheating :)
@tppoartАй бұрын
That's an insightful perspective! I actually had a drawing early on that didn't make it into the video because I struggled to blend it into the background. The drawing itself was pretty bad, and polishing the background couldn't save it. Maybe I should've added that as an example of what doesn't work with these background techniques! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
@matchafuku5913Ай бұрын
Another great video! Thank you so much, tppo! For me when i drawing a character and background illustration, i try to, in someway, make the character interacting with the background. So it doesn't look like two separate things. Don't get me wrong, i personally think your Chiori illustration is very good, but for me i would try to make her like holding the lamp structure or even touching one lamp, something like that.

You could potentially also use Adobe Illustrator's image trace (not sure if there are other softwares with it) which tends to really flatten photos but can be kinda of iffy for some. Its also a very consistent output so it can be kinda recognisable if you use it a lot

Great video. Considering Blender: There is also the IanHubert style of approach. Which is basically photobashing texture to create cheap fast models. But it of course needs some basic knowledge of blender and then most of his lazy tutorials take 20 minutes to actually make. And a little Bonus: In Blender there also is compositing, which just is adding effects to images, so you can also probably set up the compositing in blender to apply atleast some of the photo filters directly to the render

I am a Pixel Artist by "trade" (I guess), so, obviously, I draw them by hand. But, yeah, the next best thing to learning it to draw them by hand would be learning Modelling. Blocking out a fairly realistic looking scene (not even worrying about textures and such) is pretty simple to learn, actually. And so all you have to do is go into your Art Program with a lockout Render you created, trace your lines and add the detail, it will look super painterly (Or whatever style you are going for, really). To get there, is probably not more than 2 days of focused learning.

Great walkthroughs and thoughts! Just like any tool, each will be suitable for different ideas. But as an extra point to manual painting, I find the more practiced you are with painting from scratch, the more creative your ideas will be - you'll start to recognize the infinite possibilities which can then be filled in with whichever tool you prefer. Or even be comfortable with manually painting unique elements into photographed/3D backgrounds.
