TPY-4 is a multi-mission, ground-based radar built by Lockheed Martin. It uses Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology to provide greater efficiency and improved reliability as compared to legacy systems. TPY-4 can operate in contested electromagnetic environments and provides the warfighter with the ability to detect and track current and emerging threats.

And any country with wide open shorelines with distant waters offshore? It's too bad nobody's developed 18KHz Radar for underwater metal detection to guard against submarine vessels and mines. Can penetrate soil to depths of 6 ft and reflect from septic tanks - and Land Mines. As the lessons learned in Martial Arts, there is always something you can try to do about everything

@@TooDamnOld yep, it’s an incredible system, allegedly being able to detect Chinese missile launches over 5500km (3400 miles) away as far back as 1997, and also can detect stealth aircraft as well. Because both nations are a part of 5 eyes, it’s likely that all of the intelligence gathered by JORN is sent to the Americans, which means they don’t have to build their own system

@@john-paulfarrell2562 higher frequencies = higher transmission altitude. Ham radio 30MHz follows the curvature of the earth. Higher frequencies are more line of sight or more direct line transmissions. So up the frequency to up the detectable altitude. Should work fine at a guess ~ 50-75 MHz. Longer ranges for early warning from Chinese Hypersonics, don't like them either. ☮️🇺🇸

OTHR can't track aerial targets, much less provide tracking guidance. It's primarily a trip wire sensor (i.e. hey, something's out there, keep an eye out.)

Need to have a radar that can target drones...while identifying birds as a non threat target. This radar could be used in concert with a drone defence systems to take out small drone threats. I can't wait to see further developments of this system.

the radar cross section of most 5th gen planes is smaller than a bird the US has lots of jamming and active protection systems to prevent drone use
