Nicky Campbell presides over a special debate recorded at the Harris Academy in Peckham, asking just one Big Question: Is it time for all religions to accept evolution as fact?
Amongst those taking part are: Matt Ridley, author of Genome; the geneticist, Professor Steve Jones; Rev Greg Haslam, senior pastor at Westminster Chapel; Dr Steve Lloyd from Biblical Creation Ministries; Inayat Bunglawala, chair of Muslims4UK; Rev Dr Malcolm Brown, director of mission and public affairs of the Church of England; Dr Robert J Asher, a paleontoloist from Cambridge University; the sociologist Professor Linda Woodhead from Lancaster University; Imam Abdullah Hasan from Neeli Mosque and Islamic Centre; Professor Steve Fuller, sociologist, Warwick University; Mohamed Ali Harrath, founder of The Islam Channel; Pastor Marjorie Esomowie, Triumphant Church International; and Adam Deen, executive director of the Deen Institute.

No, it's not time religions accepted evolution. It's time religions accepted there are no gods.

Look I'm the first to say that religious devotees are not logical people but what you just said is equally dishonest and illogical. You will not find ONE serious and credible scientist that will tell you that there is no "god", with god being defined as an intelligence. They will tell you that they do not know if god exists because they do not know what created the big bang. There are theories about other dimensions or multiverses but as of now those are not able to be measured or experienced and so there is no evidence to support those theories just as there is no evidence to support a godly intelligence. Lets say we were able to prove that we are simply living in a simulation, which is a legitimate theory. There would still be the question of what created that simulation. Did it come from some natural mechanistic process or was it created? It is an unknown and so you cannot say there is no god because it cannot be proven otherwise. You can say, however, that the god of the bible as well as Islam and the Greek gods and many others does not exist as proven models of reality make the models of reality in the bible impossible. You can prove that man was not created separate from all other life 10,000 years ago and so you can prove that the biblical account is incorrect.

cmcrumley Scientists will say they can't say there is no god because they, like you, can't prove a negative and not because they can't say what caused the Big Bang. You are right, in that they don't know what caused the Big Bang, but that has nothing to do with the question of god. As for living in a simulation, for that to be a 'theory', requires supporting evidence that explains why we are living in a simulation. So what is your supporting evidence? One minute you say it's not possible to claim a god does not exist, the next minute you are claiming a bunch of gods YOU don't believe in don't exist. Here is why I don't believe any gods have ever existed: The bible proves itself false with over 400 contradictions There is no historical evidence for Jesus There is no archaeological evidence for 40yrs in the desert The Noah flood story is impossible / other ancient flood stories have no Ark No god has ever appeared to the masses, only claimed private appearances There is more than one religion and factions can’t agree Religious propaganda (preaching) is for the sole purpose of promotion of that religion Scientific enquiry has explained the natural world Exponents of the supernatural are all proven fraudulent ever since video and audio devices exist We have historical recorded evidence for the invention of religions by men.(Mormonism/Scientology/Islam/Hillsong) There are no cave drawings with dinosaurs! There are no cave drawings with biblical themes The word ‘faith’ exists There is the same amount of evidence for unicorns & fairies as there is for Allah. Fucking none! We can prove all positives but we can’t prove a negative - therefore God is a negative How many people would believe in and obey some unproven deity if there was no penalty not to? Since my physical dead body, my flesh won’t actually be accompanying me to Hell, what’s going to burn? If god created humanity, animals and plants and loves his ‘life’ so much…why did he create death? The God Mithra or Mitra was known 1500 years BEFORE Christ! Here is a list of characteristics that were poached to assemble the Jesus myth: Mithra was born on December 25th of the virgin Anahita. The babe was wrapped in swaddling clothes, placed in a manger and attended by shepherds. He was considered a great traveling teacher and master. He had 12 companions or "disciples." He performed miracles. As the "great bull of the Sun," Mithra sacrificed himself for world peace. He ascended to heaven. Mithra was viewed as the Good Shepherd, the "Way, the Truth and the Light," the Redeemer, the Savior, the Messiah. Mithra is omniscient, as he "hears all, sees all, knows all: none can deceive him." He was identified with both the Lion and the Lamb. His sacred day was Sunday, "the Lord's Day," hundreds of years before the appearance of Christ. His religion had a eucharist or "Lord's Supper." Mithra "sets his marks on the foreheads of his soldiers." Mithraism emphasized baptism.

Unholy Alliance I actually meant hypothesis, not theory, and its called the hypothesis of simulated reality. Why are you listing off all of the examples of incongruity in the bible? Did you even read my post? I clearly said that biblical portrayals of god are not possible! My point was that you cannot show evidence that makes the existence of god impossible! You can actually prove a negative, there are mathematical proofs that prove negatives.

As I was walking towards the house, something caused me to look up to see a classic 'flying saucer' glide directly over me well below 100', was as big as my house and looked like it just cleared it. It had a tight cluster of three brilliant red lights in a triangular pattern bottom center, which I have recently been told is part of their navigational guidance system. It wasn't until the next day, as I was telling my coworkers about it, I suddenly realized that although that craft was really low, it never made a whisper. Close my eyes today and I can still see it. Fifty years later, this still haunts me. Two years ago, I attended my first UFO convention, driving 800 miles to do so. Last year my wife went with me, but she recently fell and cracked her kneecap, so this year I am going alone. Those who claim to have 'spoken' with ETs and asked them about God, say they shrug it off as 'Non Relevant' . Those "who are in the know" say Full UFO Disclosure is coming soon and those who are religious within our midst are going to have a rough time dealing with it as it will collide head-on with much of their religious dogma teachings. We reside in a galaxy of 400 billion stars and the Hubble has revealed at least two trillion other galaxies. For us to believe we are somehow 'God's special creation" is beyond ludicrous. The evolutionary, humanist, naturalistic religion claims to have all the answers to our physical origin, our biological origin and biological development yet when closely scrutinized is not capable of backing up a single one. Big bang - everything from NOTHING. Stars cannot form all by themselves from clouds of gas. No one has ever observed ANY process whereby the Jeans limit is overcome spontaneously. Assumptions abound. Planets cannot form all by themselves from clouds of dust. No observational evidence or in fact ANY mechanistic process to back that up. Abiogenesis is an impossibility, yet there is highly complex life all around us... how now, brown cow? Evolution suffers from the same basic problem as abiogenesis - how to generate an abstract entity, specified information, via purely random physical / chemical processes????? How does that happen? That which is purely material giving rise to that which is abstract????? HOW?????

Life is actually like an engine increasing entropy even more than if life wasn’t present on the planet. Converting higher order energy like light to fuel processes etc. in fact, many believe this actually aids in supporting evolution as systems are potentially more likely to gradually restructure themselves to increase dissipation of energy, which just so happens to be associated with life like qualities like I mentioned above with light.

@Chr0maticAttack 10 жыл бұрын
There is your problem...you first attack the intelligence of the people you condemn by stating they must not have had Biology, then you state it's foolish to question the existence of the sun or gravity. Well, as a physicist I would be stupid to not question their "existence" or their laws as we continually discover new things about the universe that are altering previous conceptions about the nature of reality altogether. Also, evolution is a theory and not a law for a reason whereas the existence of gravity and the sun are based in current physical laws.
@crowsnest43
@crowsnest43 10 жыл бұрын
Chr0maticAttack I stated that they apparent haven't taken a Biology course because they demonstrate general ignorance about Biology. Pretty simple. Thank you for personally demonstrating that ignorance is commonplace, with your statements. You obviously don't know the difference between a scientific theory and a law, if you're implying that a law somehow supersedes or trumps a theory, or that science doesn't sometimes use then interchangeably. Could you please explain the difference between Newton's Law of Gravitation, and Newton's Theory of Gravitation? Does Newton's correction of Kepler's law mean that laws are broken, or that laws are indisputable? Does Einstein's correction of Newton's law mean that gravity is false? (Those are rhetorical questions, by the way. Based on your statement "Also, evolution is a theory and not a law" shows that you really don't know enough about the scientific method to go anywhere near those questions.) A Law is an explanation or observation of something that happens. A Theory is a detailed explanation of facts that have been repeatedly tested and peer-reviewed.(So yes, there are laws of evolution.) So why is it that people reject the Theory of Evolution (seemingly with no understanding of it, or the scientific method) while having no problem with accepting Atomic _Theory_, Newton's _Theory_ of Gravitation, or Einstein's _Theory_ of Relativity?

All the religious apologists can really do in this area is cast aspersions and innuendo about how that evidence is discovered, in a vain attempt to cast doubt upon it. Attempting to discredit the source of information is the oldest trick in the book when it comes to debating, and an incredibly transparent and dishonest one too. The other tactic is one of solipsism: When reality disagrees with your theology, challenge reality itself. This is another common religious apologist tactic, the attempt to say that if you cannot know anything absolutely, you cannot know anything at all, and therefore all scientific evidence can be thrown out. Of course where this obviously fails is that if you're throwing all of science out of the window, how can you keep holding onto scriptural "evidence", which has even less going for it and nothing beyond circular arguments backing it up? Throwing out reality itself isn't a valid way of proving any religion true. Then you have the presuppositionalists, who use philosophical sophistry to try and "logic" God into existence, by claiming that the laws of logic and reason itself cannot exist without God. This is perhaps the most intellectually dishonest tactic of all, only used by the most pathological "defenders of the faith", who fall back on this flawed argument because they have nothing better.

Catholics believe that the universe is the creation, and the exclusive dominion, of an infinitely powerful Spirit Being, called God (call us crazy, but I dare you to consider carefully why we think this). First, there is the evidence of logic. Through the process of simple mathematical-type reasoning, man inevitably comes face to face with certain indisputable principles: Everything has a cause; nothing can bring itself into existence. Obviously there is a long chain of causes in the universe, but ultimately there must be a first cause, an uncaused cause. This uncaused cause we call ``God.'' (The theory of evolution, even if it could be proved, would not explain the origin of anything; evolution simply deals with what may have happened after matter came into existence.) Further, 1) personal creation (man) presupposes a superior Personal Creator, 2) universal order presupposes a Universal Orderer, 3) cosmic energy presupposes a Cosmic Energizer, 4) natural law presupposes a Universal Law Maker. Basic principles of reason such as these explain why so many of the world's leading scientists are firm believers in God. Then, there is the evidence of divine revelation--on countless occasions God has revealed Himself by voice, vision and apparition (by means which are receptive to the human senses), and demonstrated His Omnipotence by stupendous, obviously supernatural miracles. Many of these revelations are a matter of authenticated historical record. The Scriptures, for example, are full of such accounts; and in modern times the world has been witness to such Heaven-sent miracles as those at Fatima, Lourdes, and St. Anne de Beaupré in Quebec, Canada, where the cured have left a forest of crutches in testimony. (The Lourdes Medical Bureau is open for examination by any doctor.) In addition, there is the liquefaction of the blood of St. Januarius which still takes place in Naples each year on September 19, his feastday; the incorruption of the bodies of many Catholic saints (such as St. Bernadette, who died in 1879); and the miraculous Eucharistic Host of Lanciano, Italy, which has been scientifically proven to be human flesh and human blood, type AB--to mention only a few of the miracles still on-going in the 20th century, which point to the existence of a God. And lastly there is the evidence of human intuition. Psychologists have long known that every human being--the atheist included--intuitively seeks God's help in times of great calamity, and instinctively pleads for God's mercy when death is imminent. Hence the renowned Voltaire, who was so eloquent in his denial of God while he enjoyed health, fame and fortune, repudiated all of his atheistic writings on his deathbed and frantically sought the ministrations of a Catholic priest. Nikolai Lenin, as he lay on his deathbed, looked around him and frantically asked pardon of the tables and chairs in the room. For as hunger for food proclaims the existence of food, man's intuitive hunger for God proclaims the Reality, the Omnipotence and the Justice of God. Catholic belief in God, therefore, is purely and simply an expression of intellectual sanity.

@@alcidebouchard5315 In a continuous type of universe as described by Laplace or Newton you would be completely correct about everything having a cause. However that's not the type of universe we are in. In this universe everything, and I do mean by this, the basic starting point of every event, including the original occurrence of the universe we observe now. Does not appear to have any 'cause' other than random quantum events. A random event cannot be 'caused' to happen or it will not be truly random, at least some part of it's characteristic will carry information from the event that caused it in the first place. Hence we can observe a statistical average which gives a general guide as to when and how the universe started but we can never determine the precise action that took place right at the start. In other words you are incorrect to assert "Everything has a cause; nothing can bring itself into existence". Mathematically I can take -1 and +1 put them together and I have 0 or nothing. The reverse is also true I can take 0 and split it into -1 and +1, but I still have 0 or nothing. You might say it was God that split the nothing but then you have to consider, what brought God into existence ? You argument for God then reduces to either God is the universe itself, or as I would postulate the universe just happened and doesn't really count as a personal God. It appears to all intents and purposes in the real universe, the one we observe, both nothing and infinity are in many ways the same thing and are both unstable and can't actually persist in any meaningful way. Thus it even seems to be the case that God, even if there were one, would have no choice but to let, possibly many, universes to occur all the time. Not really the definition of creation, just letting it happen. Your divine revelations and miracle arguments do not stand up to scrutiny if they did it would be common knowledge and all those arguing for any god would be repeating them every time there was a debate. I am aware that for the millions of visitors to Lourdes there has been an incredibly small number of documented cases where a cure occurred. Certainly if there were significant evidence theists would not be slow about bringing it forward. And lastly you talk about human intuition, I'm not even sure intuition is the right word to use, you present some anecdotal stories but they don't really prove existence of God merely the fact that from the human perspective "it would be nice if...." . I could actually use this, to point out why it is, someone will desperately want to believe in God even with very poor evidence, or none at all. In some way it is correct to say there is a God provided you believe in him/her/it. Of course this gives you no divine mandate to determine how the rest of us should live our lives and negates one of the main claims being made by most religions.

@@craigphd7844 Careful, quantum events like random electron movement don't need a cause. Something has to have no cause or you end up back with a god causing it. Of course there's still the problem of what caused God. Macro events will act as causes to other macro events but as time passes the random quantum effect will gradually make the present moment less related to the original events that caused it, if not we would be able to produce exact descriptions of the future or past. Random events at the quantum level ultimately prevent that. No matter how good the model.

Yes, instead we should have Darwin as god who influenced Lenin, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, PolPot,. Humans are just cattle. But of course Darwin himself was just a stooge of the occult. None of 'evolution' (mega evolution) ideas can be proven via test/experiment. All of its major pillars have been demolished, so that evolutionists have to scramble like Richard Lenski with his E. coli experiments, which were hailed as evolution's top example. But it was later proven to be evolution by degradation. Instead of gaining new features, the bacteria lost regulation. A mutation damaged its genetic "off" switch. 2. A simple experiment: take two dead fish. Throw one on the beach. It will decay or be prey to scavengers. Take another one and bury it in sediment/water. The latter is what happens in real life; this is what creates fossils, not slow eons of ages. Rapid, catastrophic burial. Even secular geologists are accepting this; but of course they still rebel against the notion of a worldwide, short time catastrophe could create the Earth's face. But 70% of Earth's rocks are sedimentary, formed by water/sediments. And the fossils embedded are therefore as young as the rocks. See Mt. St. Helens. After a few decades it appears to be 'ancient' topography. Or the 200 year old lava flow in Hawaii, radiometric dated as hundreds of millions of years. And of course, radio dating is extremely flawed; this can be tested and proven with actual science, not speculation.3. All of the major evolutionary 'pillars' can be easily demolished like the dead fish example.

+Tribal Wolf Studios "there is way more proof for his existence of Jesus than atheists have got for there beleif" Atheists don't have a belief that's common to them, that's the whole point; rejecting a specific form of belief. There is no evidence that Jesus was anything but a normal person, and a good portion of historians are not even convinced he actually existed. "John Smith I have never heard or seen people being healed in any other name than Jesus , we are not making statements that's not proven there are people actually being healed in Jesus" Look at the apologetic rhetoric of any religion and you will find that. How many amputees have been healed "in Jesus' name"? It should make you think that he can only deal with symptoms that are easily faked, just like all other religions claim. "why would anyone be healed by frosty the snow man , frosty the snow man isn't real" You got the relevant parallels between frosty and jesus right, good job.

Yes, it's a wonder of accidents that gravity is perfect. Imagine a ruler that stretches across the universe, and one inch increments. Out of all those inches, we happen to fall in the perfect one inch that enables life. Hm, that's a nice accident. Same with everything that enables life. Even if one was by chance, it would be a miracle. But a dozen? All of them? Nature sure is smart, able to create molecular machines more complicated than any human creation; or codes in the genome that are three dimensional (and more to discovered), and even reverse. Well, that Nature Mother is sure smart. She can give us a perfect Sun and Moon, a perfect solar system that confounds astronomers who say 'How come it's like this? It's beyond our expectations.' A perfect place in a perfect galaxy... anywhere else we would be toast; well, good thing she's smart, she must have formed an accidental map. Or put everything in precise order, so that if we had a time space machine we could pinpoint a target and hit it, even though everything is moving (eg we travel around the Sun 1,.6 million miles every day... well that Mother Nature sure has a nice train schedule. Why, she has all the attributes of God, or at least the physical ones. She's really smart.

This seems to be an argument between Darwin- followers and the mainstream Churches. on the the evident world around us and the bible.. Both parties have wonderful material to work with. and both groups have certain ideas and both draw flawed conclusions. This planet is way more than 6000 years according to the bible and everything around us points to design and immense power from the huge creations to the microscopic. The churches of Christendom do not teach nor really follow what the bible really says. They just pick out the biits they like and ignore its laws. The bible is a book of prophecy that never fail to come true. This is the time .. We are all living in the time that will see these prophecies overtake us. Let the reader show discernment. We have been given a good brain and moral sense to draw wise conclusions. Despite what Mr Dawkins says and despite the churches failings the bible does also provide us with practical wisdom like everything else we have to understand the context, and the hard thing living by it's principles.

Hopefully after taking a balanced view, anyone with a modicum of good old common sense will come to the conclusion that people who think the earth is 10000 years old and that there’s life after death, are fucking nut jobs. 🤓

Why can't you just live and let live? The world has always had contrary points of view. Just attacking things with a kind of hatred doesn't bring peace into the world. In my town it's the Christians which put up the homeless, man the foodbank, give free financial advice, pastor on the street amongst the nightlife of Friday and Saturday and scores of other things I won't bore you with and yet you would write them off because of evolution. Something is wrong somewhere..

@@Rayblondie yes secularists and the religious do good things. I do "live and let live". Secularists don't impose their views on our lack of belief on others. It is the religious fundamentalists that indoctrinate children through hate filled tirades against the LGBT community as well as undermining women's rights. I could add in the wholesale sexual abuse of children and the institutional cover up that continues to this day.

Tony Conrad oh please! Like attacking religion is a hobby. I’m not the one quoting Leviticus when it suits.

"my make believe is the truth" "My evidence based fact is the truth" "I don't believe you" That's religion in a nutshell. Also why were the religious and science people so stereotypical of the type of person they were?

As you dismiss the truth of faith (religion is organized faith based on certain theology tenets-please stop being an idiot and using the wrong words for things you know ZERO about), you can not accept the truth contained in the Bible. Sad for you.

Ryan Leach Regarding my picture, it's a fantasy/fictional character, but i do know it's hard for you people to see the difference between fictional and real. And it's not about being embarrassed but you should be embarrassed when fables like snow white or pinocchio would fit perfectly in your make believe book.

TheDusk420 What's evil about making a statement on people who are willfully ignorant / stupid. The way i see it, that they want to be looked at it that way.
