This is just wonderful. When you put so much work and effort into a machine, it is no longer a simple machine. That front axle nut was tightened by the same giant they employ at Kawasaki, to do the countershaft nuts...standing on the breaker bar made me laugh. Been there, done that 😂

I am working on a Sirokko 211 right now that it is getting cold out, that will be one. Plus the engine swap is continuing and ready for a first test start soon. I sadly can't really say when i got one ready, my professional life is more of a focus for me right now and will be at least till late spring next year.

After experiencing disk brakes on a Trabant, one never goes back to drumms, but this repair is actually done very well for whoever still drives with drumms.

The VW Golf Mk 1 Breaks ? they are also on my list! but my budget is quite limited. I actually have to get them sooner or later, the engine swap will generate more then the original 26 HP then the TÜV expects you to also upgrade the frame and breaks.
@ivaniliev78092 жыл бұрын
@@Laracrafttrabant not all parts are strictly golf 1. Some are interchangable with golf 1,2,3. I have installed the trabantwelt kit if you have that in mind and it is a pretty straight forward fit. On my car I have ventilated disks, unlike the trabantwelt and golf 2/3 calipers with an adapter for the original wheels. I do reccomend changing the brake pump as well. Let me know if you are looking for a kit outside Germany . As for the frame, I have welded some additional beams on the floor just like the rally version and they work a treat.

Interesting! i got a golf 3 "joker" at my parents, can i steal most of the parts i need from that ? with just the break adaptors from Trabantwelt? that would make it a heck of a lot cheeper! The little money i have i am putting in the Engine Adapter Plate and the Emissions testing for the TÜV. i am in Germany luckily so parts for Trabant are plentiful :D The break Pump will be from a Trabant 1.1 , sadly the break booster on the golfmk3 will not specially fit in the Trabant without heavy modification. The Engine Cradle is modified and i also talked to my welder about reinforcing the frame like you said. if you are wondering about the swap it is a Lifan 2v78f-3 (690ccm V2) Engine with a Gerret GT1238S Turbo (Smart). Thanks for the neat information - Lara Craft

@@Laracrafttrabant Unfortunatelly you can't use all from the mk3 gofl. You can probably use the disk and the caliper if they are the correct size and make. The thing is, you mount the caliper on the support, and the support must be removable from the axle of the golf. You attach the support on the adapter from trabantwelt. That support is usually from golf 1 and variants of golf 2. The hub is also golf 1. You can find all the info online in german, that's how I found everything years ago. The good news is that you can use the rear brakes from the golf 3, even if they are disks. My brake pump is a fiat one with an adapter and no booster, but I can say it is plenty powerfull to stop me anywhere and relatively easy to push(way easier than the original pump with drumms). The same pump is sold on a different german online shop, but I forgot wich one it was. Why would you replace the engine with a similar one? If you are looking for more performance from the original one, just replace the ignition and the carburettor. I run with a D variant of trabitronic and a chineese copy of a mikuni carburettor. Car runs better and faster than ever with the same fuel consumption. Drove it to Rome and back from the Black Sea. Cheers.

I think the trabant drumbrakes don't brake all that bad, at least when aren't frozen, which happened to one of my front brakes after just 5 months of standing still. They do tend to fade on long mountain downhills. My Trabant brakes about as good as my citroen Visa, and that car does have front disc brakes. I still feel like the drums are adequate, if you push hard enough on the brake pedal it's even possible to lock all the wheels.

Thats cool, didn’t know using torches to loosen stuff was a thing
@Laracrafttrabant2 жыл бұрын
Like with inserting the wheel-bearing the trick is that the heated part expands and the cold one shrinks so it fits together easy :) when you hit the outside part it expands so the bolts are easyer to get out / loosen

Where did you get all your torque specs? Also, could you tell me how far down the brake pedal should go before engaging? I replaced all the wheel cylinders and brake shoes recently, but because all the brakes were rusted to begin with I don't know how it should feel. Your videos are great btw, I can hardly believe they exist!
@Laracrafttrabant2 жыл бұрын
i did replace everything 2 years ago, so i honed the cylinders to get rid of the rust. It is a good idea to drive it regularly to prevent the breaks from rusting together again. Remember that the break fluid is hydrophilic and needs to replaced from time to time. The breaks should feel way stiffer then modern car breaks, you really have to push down for real stopping power. if you have a lot of travel and pumping you need to bleed the breaks again and make sure there is no air in the break line. for popper break action you also have to let the new break-shoes fit themself to the drums, they might pull a bit to one side but that should disappear after some driving and breaking. From doing it twice and reading a lot of other peoples experiences i would say that getting the cylinders in the right side is the most important thing, i hope the animation made that clear. i got the Files from a bavarian trabant forum, it is by far the best list i found on the internet. i put them trough google translate so take the English version with a big pinch of slat and check the actual numbers cross with the German version to be sure! www.dropbox.com/sh/yxtrw0e5ti1txzx/AAC5h0HLawpD4Qm9B0cakA5Ba?dl=0 Thanks so much for for your positive comment it made my day! helping people getting / keeping cute little trabants on the road, that is the reason i make my video and it make me really happy it works. give your Trabant some pats on the hood from me, hope she / he is better soon
