Trabant 601
26PS bei 4200 1/min
594ccm Hubraum
2-Zylinder Zweitaktmotor, luftgekühlt
Gemisch 1:33 bzw 1:50
Drehmoment 54Nm bei 3000 1/min
Länge: 3,55m
Gewicht: 615-655 Kg
Vmax: 108 Km/h

They've got so much charm, and despite the disparaging reputation, hold up very well. They certainly seem durable, and from the many videos I devour about trabis they're pretty easy to work on too.

they are remarkably reliable for their age, and especially because of their background of being a cheap, communist car. They are also remarkably easy to work on. The engine only has 5 moving parts in the whole thing.

Looks like a neat little car. Lot of history behind them from what I was reading. That two stroke, two cylinder is a lot quieter than I expected. Surprised they kept making them up till the 1990s. There is, or was, talk of a revival according to the wiki, even an electric version. I like the small size and simplicity, I probably wouldn't mind owning one to be honest. Even if someone says its possibly the worst car ever. These days, cars are so big and complex anyways...

The ultimate minimalist car... I've never experienced a Trabant, but I'm a huge fan of this East German car! People complain about slow speeds and blue smoke, but I would say that in some ways the Trabant is more eco-friendly and lasts longer than the Tesla EV. (If you drive a Trabi all your life.) Today's automobile production wastes too many resources. :( My dream is to sit in the passenger seat of a Trabant and travel through the small towns and countryside of Central Europe!

@Seegalgalguntijak 9 жыл бұрын
Nagut, wer's mag....

The Trabant 601 is a great car. It is among the first mass produced car to be made out of recycled material. Its smaller size makes it very easy to maneuver. And the overall Trabant design lasted from 1957 to the early 1990's. My only main problem with this car is the difficult manual stick. It is complicated to operate. Another thing is mixing a certain amount of oil With the gasoline. If you add too much, you'll damage the car. If you don't add enough, or any, then the engine will get dirty, and break.

Tut mir leid. Mein Deutsch ist nicht sehr gut. Are these autos still legal on German roads? I have heard you have strict inspection laws.

+kempoguy Perfectly legal as long as you dont temper with frame numbers to make it officially older or using another batch from scrap. What gives us this car? A Trabant offers earthy and honest “Comfort”. Agreed, the driving experience is a relic of the 50s/60s. But what he offers in driving pleasure you can experience when you drive it for more than a few months. There is probably no other car that can be driven and controlled as simple and clear as a P601. Have you ever tried to change gears without taking hands off the steering wheel in your car. You need only two fingers… After ashort while, when all operating procedures are done without thinking and all the cars peculiarities are known, you begin to enjoy the cars driving-properties. Also, you simply cannot beat it in terms & ease of maintenance. Access to all units and parts is free and unobscured and even with simple, standard tooling you can do most of the service and repairs by yourself. There is one rule which applies here. What it does not have - cannot break. Yes - the intervals are short - but keep in mind that this design was brought up during the fifties and only because of stubbornness and amateur-like business behavior of the political class of east-germany this tough little Sachsenring -Type was forced to drive on almost unchanged until the very end. Various prototypes have been built and if it wouldn’t have been for the latest the cars on the roads would have been different and up to standards back 25 years ago. At least in the east Spare parts are still ridiculous affordable, only if you seek to have a true to the spot original Trabant it may cost you dearly depending on the year you seek to restore. That is, compared to other classic cars kept in mind. Yes, service has to be done more often. But this is caused mainly by age than design. If you give it a thorough and complete service before beginning the “Adventure” it will never let you down as long as you stick to the intervals. But then - who drives a veteran car by heart and doesn’t do that? One thing: The stronger motorized traffic participants are to be kept in mind. Somehow it feels that as soon as one gets behind the steering wheel you give away the chore/duty to yield. At least towards the others… It feels there is no other car which can compete with that fact. Or maybe this is due to the fact that one is more alert than in a normal car. Why is that? Most people use to think that a 2-stroke Trabant is a slow car but up to a hundred it comes exactly as fast its way than any other car. Only on the highway it is slower than others but for pleasure I wouldn’t drive it there anyway. So keep that in mind while driving defensively and you will have fun. It is weird but nowadays more than 25 years after the wall fell - people cheer when they see a nice example in traffic. Well, who are the owners or better candidates for driving one? The P601 is best as a classic-car, a collector- or nostalgic item. The Trabant is still able to cope with nowadays traffic as long as the owner is aware of 60s service-intervals. Danger waits in winter-driving since aggressive salts attack the panels and chassis parts. But honestly who in his right mind drives a true classic on wintery roads. If you have to - modern preservatives like Mike Sanders grease can protect various parts. One who is not interested in doing mechanical work by himself should stay away from such veteran cars like CV2, P601, Beetle and so on. As a try-out-car it has got too expensive - just to be worn down as for example during the nineties - those times are gone. Thinking about letting the service and repair being done by a garage? Stay away! Most don’t want to or don’t have any clue any ore. Real Trabant-Garages are long gone and can only be found on enthusiast-sites - mostly privately owned and used. Most of them cannot be driven right away and have to be overhauled professionally. That concerns at least breaks and engine. One benefit it has: Once done for the major components and/or body the Trabant will last for a long time if taking care of. Who wants to restore should keep in mind that after removal of the Duroplast-Body parts and repairing the rust it is strongly recommended to paint also the inside of the inner metal fenders sitting underneath the Duroplast with 2-K paint. That keeps them form corroding since originally and rooted to production ways they were only primed. The best would be to buy new panels and align them out since the old ones will not fit perfectly again due to various reasons. First of all is the way the gaps between the panels were made - this was done by a hand-held mill. Secondly all the fenders and panels were attached by strips of thick adhesive sealant. You can find the sealant sticking out a little bit between metal parts and panels if you look for it- but there is no way that you would place them in exact the same way they were before. Been driving Trabant for the past 20 years - regularly when I was younger and later on several trips to various countries or lately at least once in a while during leisure-time and car-enthusiast meetings. I never had any problems when underways. Was it from Berlin to Stavanger (Norway), from Dresden (Germany) to Nice (Nissa) or down to southern Italy - it never let me down. Quite the opposite: I gave help to some guys stranded with their modern cars. Cheers
