Actually, it's made from Duroplast, which is a fiber based material mixed with resin, similiar to fiberglass. It's very lightweight to compensate for the small engine. A terrific little car!

The similar-but-different approach extends to the body. The basic Trabant unit-body structure is metal-pillars, floorpans, firewall, wheelhouses-and composite-material fenders, doors, hood, trunk and roof are bolted on. These are not made of paper, wood, pressed fiberboard or soybeans, as has oft been rumored; rather, the panels are made from Micarta, called Duroplast overseas. Micarta/Duroplast is created by applying heat and pressure to layers of paper, wool or glass cloth impregnated with a synthetic resin, and perhaps this is where the paper-construction myth came from. When heat and pressure are applied to the layers, polymerization transforms them into a high-pressure thermosetting industrial laminated plastic. It’s incredibly strong stuff, roughly 2½ times as strong as steel at a given thickness, and lighter, to boot. In fact, the completed car weighs just 1,355 pounds. As a result, you’ll never see a Trabant with dented or rusty panels. (European crash tests published in the 1990s reveal that at 50 km/h, a Trabant was safer than a number of newer European machines, from the Peugeot 806 minivan to the Ford Escort.) You’d think that car makers would be rushing to incorporate the stuff into their ever-stricter safety regimens, but the downside is that Micarta cannot be recycled-only burned as a means of disposal.

naja warum verbietnen es gibt doch noch genug alte oldtimer die genauso unsicher sind wie der trabant und auserdem der fahrer ist ja noch auf den treffen rumgelaufen mit kopfverband und ne flasche bier in de hand das sagt doch alles oder etwa nicht ;-)

W ogóle Trabant to bardziej uniwersalny samochód, pojedziesz nim wszędzie. A Bugatti się nadaje tylko na amerykańskie drogi, albo zachodnioeuropejskie. Laski na nie wyrwiesz. Ale naprawa, serwis i eksploatacja to droga rzecz.
