What are trace elements exactly and what role do they play in our reefs? To put it simply, trace elements are elements that appear in very small quantities in salt water. Literally trace amounts. They are vital to all sorts of biological processes and due to the limited size of our aquariums can be depleted rapidly. So the question remains, should reef aquarists be dosing trace elements regularly?

With the inaccuracy of hobby grade test kits you're better off just doing consistent water changes.

I’ve had a SW aquarium for 15 years…and just recently went “all in” converting to a reef. I would never have attempted it without amazing resources like Tidal Gardens. It’s the best on the web! Thank you.

@@tidalgardens thx for quick reply. BTW I also posted a comment on your top 5 LPS video about my struggling Elegance coral. Would love your opinion on ways to get him back to where he was…he’s retracted and lethargic but all other coral doing well. Any tips?

Mate, do put some more shots where the camera is focused on the fish in your videos, or even close ups of inverts.

Curious question, in the Major element elements, no Carbonate, Bicarbonate (Carbon) was mentioned, so is Carbon part of trace element group ?

Carbon from alkalinity? Assuming it's rolled up in one of the other major elemental measurements in this video?

Also another way to replace trace elements if you don't do water changes or dose is a Calcium Reactor right ? They say as the dead skeleton corals dissolves it puts the trace elements back in the water . I havent done a water change in 4 years in my 500 gallon reef and everything tests fine . I just have to dose Potassium and Iodine sometimes . I have a 200 gallon sump half of it is for chateo to remove nitrate and nutrients .
@rara5212
@rara5212 4 жыл бұрын
That's interesting! Do you have any sources refering calcium reactors supply trace elements?

@athomeontwo

Sealab no 28 blocks if anything. Lately I’ve been keen on potassium though, most of the nutrition corals create through photosynthesis are sugars in one form or another, potassium helps fill in the nutritional pie. It’s been so long I forget where I learned this, definitely not learned from the internet lol. Who knows maybe it’s been disproven at this point?

I did a video on Potassium a few years back. It wasn't touched on in this video because it is a major element not a trace element: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aXuoeXZ-i9CVoJI

I've been dosing trace elements for the past 7 months and have never had more success. The method not only meets natural sea water levels, but exceeds some parameters. Corals also seem healthier and more resistant to abuse I put them though 😋🦉🍻

I really like the way fire fish look, but almost never see them in peoples tanks. I see this one only has one. What's the reason for seeing these so common in lfs but not in tanks (on youtube, at least)?
@tidalgardens

I always liked them. The only problems I ran into was they get aggressive towards each other when they get older and they like to jump out of the tank.

Best to increase frequency of water changes rather than mess with dosing and testing trace elements.

Brilliant. I’m dosing all of the above except Iron and I’m testing fairly regularly using Triton ICP tests. I do ICP about once a month and I’m now adding trace elements once per week as I have averaged out the uptake. One trace element I am adding (but only 0.2ml per week) is Vanadium. What are your thoughts on this?
