Michael Lugo In 1989 in Australia, I first saw a short Simpsons skit before "Turner and Hooch" at the cinema when they would sometimes show a short film with the previews. It was quite bedazzling with its striking colours, distinct voices and edgey humour. I think people were in a state of shock and rapture and were left thinking "What WAS that?? Take a look at the eighties. THere's a reason James Brooks waited for two years for her to have a baby and then come back to work. Nobody else could have pulled off a show like this. Comedy of course is in large part subjective, but Sam Simon has worked with some of the biggest talents around and says that she is one of the all time television greats. The guy may have been nuts, but I'd take his opinion over people on the internet. Even though I often don't find her laugh out loud funny, although I don't find much of anything laugh out loud funny right now. Most celebrities tend to have both big egos and be quite insecure so what is said here really doesn't mean much, but thats kind of true, define what 'credit' actually means. Its sort of like Frazier being a big hit, but you don't give credit to Ted Danson for it. I think she gets plenty of credit without it.

They say that Tracey Ullman hated the Simpsons shorts and wanted them off her show, only later to claim credit and try to sue them for it when The Simpsons became huge. One of the writers (I think Jay Kogan) says that she used to say the exact same thing which she says here, that she "breast-fed" The Simpsons.

@@WanderWithRachel LOL, It certainly would not have taken food from the creators, and as Sam Simon, one of THE creators said, they all got fabulously wealthy from a cartoon, so thats just ludicrous. It would have taken SOME money from the Murdocks, which I'm fine with. And I tend to listen to THE creator of The Simpsons, Sam Simon, who talked about Ullman as one of televisions greats, which by now she has certainly proven herself to be. Its doubtful she ever really cared for it, lots of women in particular don't care for it, and of course nowadays hardly anybody does. The lawsuit was more than a decade after the show had been on, so its pretty likely that the money it was earning had lawyers working for just a percentage to say "well, why NOT give a lawsuit a try?" A mark of her professionalism is that unlike most people, she DOESN"T badmouth the show, in fact for about two decades its been more of an embarassment that if anything she'd avoid being associated with. Meanwhile, every show she does gets critical acclaim and she's performed with the best talents in the industry. " In 1991, Ullman filed a lawsuit against 20th Century Fox alleging four counts of breach of contract. According to the , the 14-page complaint alleged that Ullman’s contract with Gracie Films (Brooks’s production company) entitled her to “five to 10 percent of the net receipts of the merchandising and other profits from products or programs based on spinoff characters, including animated characters, even if those characters were originated by others.” And since began on , she argued that she should be entitled to those profits."

The title is completely misleading. She never ever did the actual voice of Marge. Or any other character. As others have said she hated those original shorts but then later sued for a piece of the profits of the series. Her Fox show was never a huge ratings hit, but was critically acclaimed. It was also one of the only quality shows on the early Fox Network (and it ran for four seasons). HBO later picked it up and it ran even longer. I still think Ullman is a genius, this is just how showbiz works. As part of the settlement she did a guest voice on _The Simpsons_. The Simpson's first premiered on the Tracey Ullman show, but she didn't create them, Matt Groening created the characters, and it was the cast of the Tracey Ullman show who voiced them, while I assume they were being paid as cast members of the Tracey Ullman show at the time. So I think from a strictly "who created the simpsons" question, then it was Matt Groening, but Tracey Ullman gave them their first public viewing, through her show. So they wouldn't have had a pre-established audience without Tracey Ullman.
