I have been following her career since 83, and I proudly display her Vinyl record "you broke my heart in 17 places" next to my record player. I appreciate her even more since I saw her on Larry David's Curb show. But the true credit must go to Kirsty McColl, who wrote this song and gave a first rate interpretation.

I know that it has been said before, but even though Tracey is wonderfully brilliant in this classic rendition, it is Kirsty's backing vocals that brings a tear to my eye every time I listen to it. Tracey has said many times that she was unable to hit the 'Baby' note and Kirsty's voice was used. In fact, if you listen to Kirsty's original you would be hard pressed not to feel that the vocal was lifted directly from it. MacColl, in my mind, wrote the perfect single with this masterpiece. Apparently, she spent ages crafting it into what we have here. It is the manner in which her minor key vocals contrast with Ullman's that makes me so sad when thinking about the manner in which she was killed, and the ensuing injustice.

@Rollin_L

@@CaptainDarrick The songwriter, Kirsty MacColl, was killed in a tragic act of a criminal nature that was never met with proper judicial action. In December 2000, she was on vacation in Mexico with her two young sons, in an area reserved for swimming and diving only. A speeding boat came through just as they were rising to the surface of the water. Kirsty pushed her sons out of the way but was struck and killed instantly. The boat belonged to a wealthy Mexican businessman, and some eyewitnesses believed it was he who was at the helm, speeding through were craft are not allowed. An employee of his claimed he was driving, possibly being paid for taking the rap. An insignificant fine was assessed based on his poor financial status and he did no jail time. The Justice for Kirsty organization was founded by her mother, Jean, and while they did get some concessions from the Mexican government, no proper justice was ever given. Kirsty herself had released "They Don't Know" a few years before Tracey's version, but its success was undermined by a strike in the record industry in Britain, no actual records being produced to sell in the stores. She worked on a few songs with Tracey in the early 80s, and had greater success as a solo artist later, on top of her appearance with The Pogues in the famous "Fairytale of New York" duet with Shane MacGowan, in 1987.

Toch is zij van groot belang geweest voor wellicht de belangrijkste televisiefamilie aller tijdens die in 1989 in haar Tracy Ullmanshow hun debuut maken. The Simpsons.
