Thanks for pointing that out. All these years later, I still miss Kirsty. By the way, when I saw Kirsty play Chicago's double door club, she introduced this song by shouting "God bless, Tracy Ullman!" Tracy adopting this song as her theme song for her show provided an annuity for Kirsty and her family. A good friend of mine had four songs on a TV show, he said they paid more than every album he's ever released...combined.

I responded to somebody, but I think it's worth mentioning as its own comment. As many people have pointed out, the song was originally written and recorded by Kirstie MacColl - daughter of the songwriter Ewan MacColl _(The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face)._ Tracy heard it, and wanted to cover it, and even included Kristy's original exclamation "Baby!" from the original recording. What many might not know is that the *only* guaranteed money in music is the songwriting. Everything else can be stolen by the record company, but songwriting is handled by separate groups, and if you retain your own publishing, you can keep it out of the hands of the record company. It's only pennies per track, but they add up. So Tracy covering Kristy's song gave Kirsty a constant stream of income. But far more than that, anytime you synchronize a song with visuals (like the opening credits of a very popular television show) the songwriter gets paid _every single time at plays._ and the _Tracy Ullman_ show was on _HBO_ for years. And it's not pennies, it's a substantial amount. A good friend of mine got four songs on a popular TV show, and tells me that those four songs made him far more money than all of his dozen or so albums *all put together.* So Tracy's cover of this song basically enabled Kirsty to have the career she had. When I saw Kirsty at Chicago's _Double Door_ club, she introduced this song by shouting _"God bless Tracy Ullman!"_ Indeed.

It's called Mechanical Royalties, meaning that each time a reproduction is "mechanically" created the copyright holder is paid a small fee. Mechanically created was interpreted as made by a machine, such as an album press or tape recorder. Synchronization licenses were very expensive and very lucrative to the copyright holder. To get around the Sync license, TV shows a d movie productions started having covers of the song made, so they only had to pay a performance license. It's a very dirty business.

it did not, it was written en sung by Kirsty Maccoll in 79. Due to bad decisions by the record company it did not work til 4 years later Tracey did a cover. An 80s song that sounds like Diana Ross could have sung it in 1965. The music video is incredible. The Paul McCartney appearance at the end is icing on the cake. It’s great social commentary about growing up and getting older, the different stages of life. It was absolutely the right call to make this the theme to her HBO show - and have every character she plays in the show sing it. I first saw her as the horny, Sheriff of Rottingham loving witch in Mel Brooks’ underrated Robin Hood: Men In Tights. Her delivery in that movie was spot on hilarious. “I was that close. I touched it.” Wow. Okay. 😂
