Paul Weller started his own record label Respond during the last days of The Jam , the idea was to create a new Motown promoting new artists , Tracie Young was discovered by The Jam frontman through an advertisement in Smash Hits magazine , her demo tape impressed Weller enough to win the job and become his priority signing for the new label.He promptly used her for backing vocals on The Jam's final single, "Beat Surrender" and The Style Councils first single Speak Like A Child
