@@TracieLin does it have Camac levers? I also wondered about what you said about tuning A to A instead of C to C. I prefer the warmer tone but have never heard of changing the tuning. How do you do it?
@TracieLin4 жыл бұрын
Susan Suits Yes I upgraded it to Camac levers. I just tune all the notes down to A-A range and changed out the string gauge of the bottom 3 octaves to the next gauge up. I also had to change out the colored strings to the correct corresponding colors according to the new tuning. If you are ordering a new one, perhaps you can ask them to make it in A-A stringing so you don’t need to worry about it yourself. I’d be happy to send you my string chart if you are interested.

I just looked up the sonnet. Wow. Exciting. Do you feel like you have to keep your legs tense, to hold it in place? It is different from having the harp between the knees to play.
@TracieLin3 жыл бұрын
@@annettekelly1592 Yes Sonnet is awesome and I really enjoy playing it. The 29 string range makes it very versatile and the sound is very resonant and full for a lap harp. The harp rests comfortably on my lap and it stays fairly stable. The bottom of the soundbox is pretty wide (13") so even if you set it on the ground to play, it doesn't wobble and there's no need to steady it with my legs.

Deb W Thank you so much for your comment! Yes you will truly enjoy the Sonnet harp. Just to let you know, I did tune down my harp to A-A and switch the string gauge one size up for the 3 lower octaves. So the tonal quality is warmer than the original C-C stringing. I use Tascam DR-05 digital recorder to record the audio and a Canon M50 camera for the video. The recorder is placed between my body and the harp for the best sound capture. Hope this helps!
@debw26354 жыл бұрын
@@TracieLin can I ask you another question? Did you switch up your string gauge before you received the harp? or did you ask them if it could be restrung with larger strings after ? I am just wondering if I will like the strings as they are, I made a studio harp from a musicmakers kit when I started harp, long long ago, and I changed the strings to wound nylon in the lowest octave, it made the harp a lot nicer to play and sound was improved ,,

Such beautiful playing straight from your heart, as always! I’m 71 y/o and just started playing in April. I’ll probably only be able to purchase one good harp at my age and small budget, and I’m seriously considering this harp. I’m curious about how well it rests on your lap while playing. Do you need to use a strap to keep it in place or does it stay on your lap on its own? Thank you for all of the music you play for us and the tenderness you pour into your songs.
@TracieLin3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Suzanne for your comment. So glad you decided to learn harp. Harp is an instrument you can pick up at any age and still sound good. The Sonnet rests on my lap fairly comfortably. It is a pretty sizeable lap harp with a wide soundbox towards the bottom. At first, I did find the harp a bit too tall sitting on my lap when I sat playing on my sofa. But if you sit at the right height with your knees just a bit below the hip, it will work very well. There's slip resistant padding on the bottom to prevent the harp from sliding forward. I don't use a strap and it stays in place for the most part. Although in hindsight, I'd probably have those strap buttons installed as an option just in case I want to use a strap. Good luck with your harp journey and feel free to let me know if you have any other questions.

Congratulations on your new harp, very beautiful in sound and seeing it with that beautiful color. I really liked this music with which you inaugurated your new instrument, and I am also learning about harps, a world previously unknown to me. I don't know the author you mentioned, but perhaps some of his animated films have also been published here. I should be looking for him. What can I call you: just Trace, or LIn, or is Trace Lin all a name? Ciao 🌞Pino
@TracieLin4 жыл бұрын
shonerip Hello Pino! Yes, I am so in love with my new purple harp. It has the best of what I’m looking for: intimacy and portability of a lap harp, rich and warm tone of a floor harp, sweet clarity of all notes, and beautiful color and aesthetics. I think this will probably be my main go-to harp from now on. I’ve found that it’s better to focus on one particular instrument and build deep relationship with it rather than hopping from one to another. My first name is Tracie. Lin is my last name. Blessings!
@omarkassem44104 жыл бұрын
I saw the link to this video when I was looking on the Music Makers Web site specifically about this harp. The lap harps I have tried before sit rather awkwardly on my lap and are harder to play than a floor harp, however, the description of this harp states it was designed to make it easier to play on one's lap than the usual design. Do you find that to be the case? Listening on my computer it seems to have a stronger resonance than I would expect from a lap harp or it may be just because you play so well. I always enjoy your videos.
@TracieLin4 жыл бұрын
Omar Kassem Thank you for your comment. I have mixed feelings about the design. On one hand, the slanted bottom does feel pretty comfortable and stable when I put it on my lap. It doesn’t make a crease on my thighs like my Ena double-strung. But sometimes I want to sit somewhere where I want put it on the ground and lean it towards me. Then the entire weight of the harp presses against my shoulder and feels pretty heavy. So I have to sit somewhere where it can comfortably rest on my lap than elsewhere. As far as sound, it has amazing resonance and volume for a lap harp (not just bc of my playing LOL). Of course that’s due to the pretty sizable soundbox it comes with. It is definitely one of the best sounding lap harps available out there, IMHO. Hope this helps!
@omarkassem44104 жыл бұрын
@@TracieLin Thank you for giving me your opinion about this harp. I wrote to Music Makers about a stand for it, but they have not yet designed one. I have not seen a lap harp with 29 strings and that could be strung down to A2 before. I told Matt about this video and he can build it with the correct colored string set to go down to A2 like you have done. I wish I had better wood working skills so that I could build my own stand because from your video it has more resonance than I would expect from a small harp and is less expensive than a floor harp. But, I have been told by several people that a floor harp is easier and better for a beginner to learn on and play so I will pursue that instead.
@TracieLin4 жыл бұрын
Omar Kassem I also inquired about a stand for the Sonnet with Musicmakers when I first got the harp. They are open to designing one but probably don’t have the time and resources to right now. If you are a beginner and new to learning harp, yes I would agree that a floor harp is a better way to start off with. It’s just more stable and much easier to learn proper positioning without forming bad habits. Good luck!

Very moving performance! I also have a Sonnet; it has such a nice sound for a small harp! So, when you tune it, your lower string is tuned to A? Did you have to then change the strings?
@TracieLin3 жыл бұрын
I appreciate your comment! Yes, this harp has amazing sound for a lap harp. Yes, the lowest note is A. I re-tuned all the strings down 2 notes. Then I swapped out the good portion of the strings to one gauge up to achieve better tonal quality and not feel too floppy.
@TracieLin2 жыл бұрын
@Deette Bunn I went one gauge thicker for most of the strings so they don’t feel not too floppy. I can send you my string chart if you send me an email. Or you can ask Jacob at Musicmakers for the A-A string chart.
