The other side, which you don't manage to see, would be Catholic ( Falls Rd side = Ireland flags, Irish Tri-Colour ) I was born and raised in Belfast and now living in Newcastle NSW. Happy to clarify any questions mate. It's not easy to understand, it can get complicated but you got most of it sorta right. Love the football top you decided to get ☘️🍻.. The two kids who came up to you said " hope you don't think we were chasing you for something else". In other words "we weren't following you to rob you" lol... Miss that accent. I currently live in Australia and I can tell a guy from Crumlin or Ballyfermot or one from the posh areas instead straight away. Tough people and tough areas, I remember every night the way they were looking at me ( i look latino of course ) while I was walking to the bus stop on Walkingstown Road. Loved my time there, met amazing people. when I went to Belfast I felt exactly the same way you did when you had goosebumps. As I come from a town in southern Italy full of Mafia gangs and shoting wars, I can understand 100% what you meant by trauma, and in Belfast you can really breathe that vibe, unreal. The reason you see a lot of Scottish flags is from the Ulster province under britain it was colonised by scottish migrants to replace the mainly Roman Catholic population there as the fields in ireland were very valuable to feeding their other colonial ventures. @@Pete_YT The North East of Ireland was part of the DalRiata Kingdom, long before the English arrived. Before there were roads, there were boats and the Scotland was more accessible to the Antrim Coast than Dublin, for example. A Gaelic speaking heritage exists there for many many centuries. Look at the history (and massacres) of Rathlin Island, for a microcosmic look at the overall history of the area. Fun fact, Ulster was "planted" with English speaking settlers because it was always the most opposed to English rule, the most difficult to manage for the English, and the most determined to preserve a Gaelic heritage. To me, even though it is officially part of the UK, the Antrim coast is still more "Irish" than Dublin ever was. The Scotti people migrated from what is now Ireland, hence giving Scotland the name it has today. The links between the North of Ireland and Scotland have always been there and the people are often very similar. I am one of them and consider myself totally Irish, but my culture is different to someone in Cork for example. I lived and worked in Cork for a few years and was often asked, by people who had known me for a while, what part of Scotland I was from. That was a bit irritating to be honest.
@anthonyf368028 күн бұрын
You forgot to mention that it was Scottish protestants that were sent there to colonise and to stop the ulster province because that was the province of Ireland that was most resistant against British rule

Spanian, I can feel and understand what you are saying. You only need to look at our wife's connections and how they keep and maintain their culture. I am Maori and we connect to your wife's whanau in some way because of the great migration where our waka sailed the great oceans and each waka ended up at different lands well before it was colonized before the pakeha/palangi came ashore. I would love to invite you to our marae just so you can see how our culture maintains their roots. We can be anywhere in the world but we can quite honestly say that we have a place call home. Your wife would probably have the same concept from her village. I just want to say that "it takes a village to raise a child" and that's how we Maori do it in New Zealand. I'm 67yrs old and I love watching out for your videos. You so remind me of my nephew Manaia. Love to meet you one day, hopefully on my marae. (Turangawaewae)

Hey Spanian I'm an Englishman working and living in Sydney, 2 years ago I flew back to England to visit my family and decided to visit Ireland for 3 days with my folks we stayed in Cork (which I would recommend) then I hired a car and drove to Limerick without any biased influences towards the place and we all absolutely loved it! I don't have family history from there but I had a strange urge/feeling to visit! So glad I did! Loved your whole family heritage video it was so intriguing thanks pal 🤙

Congratulations, what a journey. I love your passion and I would rather watch your vlogs, they are much better than documentaries that only show one the popular sites. So what next, it’s difficult to imagine that you could get any more entertaining and yet you will I’m sure of that. A brilliant job, thank you so much.

Your vlogs would be 100x better if you took the time to have more in depth conversations with locals. Google only tells you so much and seeing parts of a country through a local eyes will give you a whole new appreciation for it. Just some advice Josh

Mondays are my days off and i've been looking forward to watching this! What a great video. Loved your korero/talk at the end of this vlog. Very important. Thank you, for sharing your journey with us all. My dad was born in Italy, mother from NZ- not been to Italy before. Always felt like i never fit in anywhere and am 32 now. Perhaps that feeling will disperse after a trip to discover my roots. Thanks again for another great video :)

The highrise at -2:12:31 (Divis flats) was an IRA stronghold during The Troubles but has since been knocked down and rebuilt. There's a huge amount of history in those flats alone but you were right to say about the trauma of that area. Love the video as always and glad you got to see my city.
@NoEvidenceForGod28 күн бұрын
Spanian's descriptive words about Belfast (trauma, sad, etc) aren't too far off and it's easy to see what he's getting at. Belfast carries the weight of history, where echoes of conflict linger in its murals and architecture, yet these elements coexist with a deep sense of renewal and hope. The remnants of that era can evoke feelings of heaviness or unease which is what he was probs referring to. The streets just have this industrial texture and grittiness to them. Idk if this comment is cringe and who gives a fuck what some random youtube commenter thinks lol

Irish for Belfast is Beal Feirste. It means, the mouth of the river Farset, which still runs under Belfast's High Street. The English changed Irish names into something they just sounded like. Irish names are descriptive of the place where are located. When the English changed the names, they became nonsense, meaning nothing.

You’re absolutely right about Limerick - beautiful city with history, culture, sportsmen and women - a people connected. Don’t know how much more time do us Irish have left as a welcoming and caring people when our own government are knowingly pitting us against each other and completely changing the culture we are so famous for! We have to change the referendum that sanctioned a new pact on migration and asylum allowing undocumented young men into Dublin City who have increased crime by 25%. Irish people emigrated for generations but we never expected hands ours - we slept on friends sofas and worked, contributing financially. We didn’t expect handouts. I have empathy for true asylum seekers but these men dispose of their ID on the way here, flushing them down toilets etc - and it’s not their fault - it’s 100% our governments fault and we’re all going to pay the price if we don’t collectively do something! Historically we’ve been asked to vote on issues that seriously affect us - what they’re doing is destroying our country - and they’re supposed to be FOR the people!! Phew.. sorry for the rant - great video!☘️☠️👽

Limerick is rough but no rougher than any other city in the western world these days. It's bad reputation comes from a feud that was happening almost 20 years ago. Today Dublin is much worse and even the Dubs will admit Dublin has gone downhill. Anyone still saying Limerick is Stab City is out of touch with modern Limerick. Although I find it hilarious that you said it's more Irish while you were on Parnell Street. That street is about as Irish as Istanbul these days, except for Mark Murphy's Pub.

I definitely preferred it to Dublin, however, Spanian would have preferred it if he had gone South of the River Liffey, everyone knows that the Northside isnt as nice.

Unfortunately the main bus station in Dublin and the location of the hotel where you stayed is in the more run down end of the city and not the nicest to walk around. A lot of homeless accomodation and addiction services for the city centre are located there hence the constant smell of piss and the 'crack head' vibes. Dublin definitely has it's issues just like any city but I think you'd really enjoy it if you had more time to experience other parts of the city and suburbs

Seems like you guys are dealing with immigration issues like we are in the states. The thing is people aren't coming for the right reasons. They aren't coming to work hard and start a family and do what immigrants have done for centuries. They aren't escaping genocide or anything. They saw how people lived on social media and want to come and live off their money. They think they deserve it or something. I am not against immigration or immigrants but I feel like social media has caused this massive influx of single young men to countries and they just want to take advantage of taxpayer money.

you must have lived or you are living in completely different Limerick , this city / larger village actually / is one of the worst , ugliest places in Europe . 50% of population are simpletons or scumbags , young gangsters and bandidst , incompetent drivers, ignorant people and people living on their own terms and rules . Horrible ,terrible management of the city by the city council, lack of police badly needed due to fast rising crime ,that scares off the rest of good population to stay here for good , many Irish people decide to leave this medieval village already . Not many positives Limerick has to offer , sad fact
