A blocked injector can also sound like 'rod knock'. May I suggest, crack all the injectors while it's running to see which is the offending cylinder, then swap that injector to another cylinder and see if the issue follows or stays on that cylinder. From memory, those injectors are notoriously unreliable, and also pretty cheap to replace. Good luck! Loving the content!!!

I’d be VERY surprised if you had a bent rod. You should check the injectors next.

First step...verify all injectors are operating properly. If so then you have a piston nailing the head or a rod clanking somewhere...Usually you can almost "feel" it. It's pretty violent. Turbo sounds like it's putting up fierce resistance.... but good luck. Make it fun

If you want to check the mechanical health of your engine you need to look into one of the oil filters. Cut open or whatever, if the bearings are toast, you will find them in there.

Pull the injectors sounded like a fuel issue had a d7 lock up like that ended up being hydro locked with fuel

Bottom end knock for sure. Might find some metal in the filter if you cut it open.

Great work!!! I would try to drop the oil pan and pull the head to the check rod bearings, piston slop and cylinder walls. Just my 2 cent!

You solved the problem with the fuelknock in the engine ✌️✌️ To bad it revealed some other knocking in the engine 😩 sounds are hard to hear on a speaker where they come from, If the crank is bad maybe the partmachine in the scrapyard have engineparts to donate if it not been scrapped 😊

Sounds like a lack of fuel going to one cylinder, Bleed all the lines and check the injectors to make sure they are not blocked

Great channel. I think you have an injector problem. Pete-Mate has the right idea. Swap your injectors and see which one is the problem. Mic-Up Lisa and she will adds some class to the channel.... lol. Give the 360 a try. Oops, you should have let it run for a while.

I think I would have tried to see if it would move before putting a bunch of time and money into the engine. It might not be economically feasible to save it if the transmission has issues too. Cool video. Good luck with it.

Considering the value of the machine when it’s working I would do a fairly deep dive into before trying to run it. Definitely pull the injectors and recalibrate. Along with what others have suggested it could be a frozen injector pintle.

Old cat tech. Your tell tale is it knocks randomly with no fuel or fuel off while cranking. That points toward mechanical damage. Cats extremely rare to ever fail wrist pins (3306, D333) included in that statement. Rod bearings fail due to high hours or most likely lack of oil and usually #5 or #6 farthest from oil pump. The knock is more pronounced as oil warms up and thins out. Crank it in fuel off and listen to what I hear in your video here in Ia. Fuel knock is white smoke. Yes these older PC engines rattle a little more but it is an upper end noise. Consequently, I have a Deere 655 in my driveway same thing. Somebody ran it low on oil.😢

Right now we think cylinder 6 is not making enough injection pressure to actually go past the injector. Ever see that? Not getting any fuel at all with a good, tested injector.

If the glow plugs are working you don’t need either. The pre is on the starter switch. Instead of turning to start turn the opposite way to heat. Heat for 3 to 5 minutes then go to start. Once she starts go back to heat for more minutes till she is running perfect. This is the CAT manuals instructions on how to start it.

I would definitely look into the injector knock idea my dad has a case 1155E loader and the engine took a crap one season so he rebuilt it and he had a problem with the injector knock during the first few times fired up thought he made some kinda mistake was about to tear back into it and a buddy of his told him bout checking the injectors cause it did seem like the noise was more topend

It sounds like a belt is squealing. It looked like the fan wasn’t turning properly. It sounds like it isn’t running on all of its cylinders. If it isn’t locked up you can isolate cylinders by cracking open the injector lines at the injectors. It is possible to dump loads of automatic transmission fluid into the fuel to get the injectors ungummed. Good luck with her.

fyi on those cat ,s you can open the nut,s on top of injectors and prime fuel clear to injector w0ith hand pump then close nuts then start good luck those are great machines

It doesn't quite sound like a knock, more of a miss, and from the condition of that bleeder I wouldn't be shocked if the fuel delivery system had been into by a less-than-brilliant mechanic and been screwed up. also, did it lock up or did it just start to have the piston rings reseat, and have it start building compression again? (I'm sure it's already been done, but just hit the starter to see if it's locked itself up or not)

do a pop test on the injectors. if the springs inside have gotten weak can cause fuel to be sprayed to early in the combustion cycle. running some old diesels on ether will make that same ‘rod nocking’ sound which is just detonation.

thats pretty loud. i have a skid steer that was like that and it was a rod knock. check the oil for metal. if it sits a while and turns over again id say you know its an injector

It has been a while since I worked on a 977, but I don't think it should sound like a hammer tap tap. Drain the engine oil and see if there is shaving or metal in it.

That noise is half the engine speed so your now looking at cam or valve train. I’ve seen valves stick open because the ouch rod has bent or jumped out of place because of having to much play. It did go quiet at one point in the video so I would be having rocker cover off and looking for a broken valve spring and turn it over and make sure everything is moving. But yes it is misfiring it’s getting fuel hence the Smokey exhaust so it’s no longer a furlong issue. Like I say I would be looking around the valves and valve springs and push rods.

@@dieseJL I had a freight rover pick up with a 2.5ltr diesel 4pot every winter it would bend a push rod due to valve guide being tight in cold weather. The head had been reconditioned it was like that for some time till it wore in. If that engine had been stood I think it’s got a valve sticking open hence the noise your heating and at one point it closed then got stuck again might be because push rod jumped out and held it open hence why you can no longer turn it over because the valve is open and resting on top of the piston. You need to get rocker cover off to see what’s going on in there you’ll soon see if it got a valve open as rocker arm will be very loose. Can’t wait to see the next part of the video to see what you find out good luck keep me posted please

it sounds like a bottom end hitting the sump. trying o self clearance. try a borescope in the sump ,valve covers would be worth it also.

There are 2 drain tubes coming off the fuel injection system . One tube bleeds the primer hand pump when vent is opened . The other tube will bleed transfer pump front shaft seal if it is leaking fuel. Transfer pump should not be leaking fuel from this tube. Replace transfer pump or pump seal

Time to tear into the engine. Runs great but has some knock. Id drop the oil pan and check rod bearings as well as pop off the valve cover to check for loose rockers.

Is the overflow pen ended at the bottom it should go somewhere. Find out where it may require acheck valve there's no ope fuel lines on diesel engines.good luck

Oil pressure was pegged in the green and after we shut it off it slowly bleeds down

you could have bad carbon buildup, loose rocker, or sticky injector, try pouring a couple quarts of atf in the fuel that will clean it out

I don’t know anything except when you work on those fuel systems you should probably clean them off the best you can before you start tearing them apart. It’s hard to tell on video it sounds like a manifold leak, but I’m sure you would have seen that.

Was rode hard n put away wet n used just plain tired it is unfortunatly.hope you can get scrap price at least out of all that wieght.hell yeah wanna see the wagoneer scream my dad had one with think 360 or 390 in it took us up powerlines that scared the hell out of kids,leaning like tower of peizza but we never did roll.worst thing was distributer was in bad spot every big mud hole caused misfires,but dad just dryed it out sprayed it heavy with wd-40ran fine for next two weeks.snooky pa.💥👍🙏💥

That's what I want to see. What's that? A person throughing components at a machine so that they attach themselves to it. That would be quite the sight to watch. Knowing that they're inanimate objects, they have no way of doing this.

You are not getting fuel through all your injectors, and it sounds like your turbo is grinding. It doesn't sound like rod knock on the video and if your injectors are stopped up you will get loud noises.
