Just like in any family, not all members always get along, but when the need arises, they’ll always be there for one another. The dynamics between Lundi and Setombe can be quite complex. Setombe, being the dominant female, has a sensitive and wary nature. She tends to be skittish and doesn’t mix much with the other adult cows, preferring the company of her best friend, the dominant bull Sebakwe, and her daughter, Klaserie. Lundi, on the other hand, is best friends with Tokwe, the herd's matriarch. Although there are occasional conflicts, the elephants in the herd generally value peace and mutual respect.

I think Phabeni's brief appearance unwittingly highlighted the differences at the top of the hierarchy. Do you recall the vids where Setombe was particular about who was allowed to allomother Phabeni, and how she kept Tokwe and Lundi at a distance? On the other hand, Setombe would allow Bubi to share the allomother duties. I am stretching it here, but Tokwe apparently became the matriarch when the 4 cows came south from Zim in 2002. Accordingl to the natural elephant order, this should have been Setombe at 17, as the oldest and biggest cow. And yet, a 14 year old (Tokwe) usurped her position. I can only conclude that Setombe may have been suffering from the elephant equivalent of PTSD - and if you want to find an easy cause, google elephant rides PTSD.
@camp44mag10 күн бұрын
@Bloodnok49, Those are interesting insights if correct. I wonder what the HERD folks think. I only found the HERD channel a month or two before phabeni died, and haven't yet watched many of his prior videos.
@Bloodnok4910 күн бұрын
@camp44mag ty. I have tried to make it clear where I am having to surmise: but there is older evidence in the healthy vid archive where Adine refers to Setombe making poor decisions. And even though the archive is over 16 years on from 2002, Setombe is usually reserved with humans and keeps close to her daughter; I dont think I was the only one who was pleasantly surprised to see Setombe come forward with Phabeni and come out of her shell. Just as Adine had observed Klaserie stabilised Setombe, so Phabeni seemed to be the final part of Setombe''s healing as Setombe asserted herself and you could see her forming her own select band of allomothers. There was one vid where (unless I misheard) I think Tigere said Lundi and Tokwe were afraid of Setombe.
@camp44mag10 күн бұрын
@Bloodnok49, Yes, if I recall correctly, I heard similar things regarding Setombe's strengths and challenges. All together, understanding the history and circumstances better makes it even more heartbreaking now to think of Setombe's level of pain and grieving.
@herdelephantorphanage9 күн бұрын
It's fascinating to observe Lundi's task-oriented behaviour. The dynamics between Setombe and Lundi could be influenced by several factors. Setombe, as the dominant female, has a sensitive and wary nature. She tends to be skittish and doesn’t interact much with the other adult cows, preferring the company of her best friend, the dominant bull Sebakwe, and her daughter, Klaserie. Lundi, on the other hand, is best friends with Tokwe, the herd’s matriarch. In any family or social group, there are individuals who don’t always see eye to eye, and elephants are no different. Despite their occasional conflicts, the herd generally prioritises peace and mutual respect. Ultimately, the herd’s cohesion is maintained, as they rely on each other for survival and support. Elephants, much like humans, have complex social dynamics, and occasionally, individual personalities don’t align perfectly. As for the carers, working in such intense heat is no easy feat. They stay cool by wearing lightweight, breathable clothing, staying hydrated, and taking breaks in shaded areas. Their unwavering dedication to the elephants' well-being is truly commendable.

I was wondering why they didn’t get along when you said Lundi keeps her space. Does Setombe get aggressive with the others? I know you said she’s the disciplinarian of the youngsters. Does she consider Lundi a youngster? What will set Setombe off?
@herdelephantorphanage9 күн бұрын
Like in most human families, not everyone always gets along. Setombe, the dominant cow, tends to keep to herself and prefers the company of Sebakwe, the dominant bull, and her daughter, Klaserie, rather than mixing with the other adult cows. Lundi, on the other hand, is best friends with Tokwe, the herd’s matriarch. Setombe’s assertiveness is likely triggered by perceived threats, disruptions in the herd’s order, or challenges from other elephants.
@chinyingi10 күн бұрын
This is interesting! I'm curious why an elephant would want to track a lion. I would have thought they would stay clear from the lions.
@herdelephantorphanage10 күн бұрын
While it might seem counterintuitive, elephants sometimes track lions to keep an eye on potential threats. By knowing the location and movements of predators, elephants can better protect themselves and their herd. This proactive behaviour helps them anticipate danger and take necessary precautions.
@chinyingi10 күн бұрын
Thank you. That makes sense.

I didn’t know Lundi and Setombe didn’t get along. I thought all the elephants got along well together.
@herdelephantorphanage9 күн бұрын
The relationships between elephants can be more complex than they might seem at first. While they do have strong social bonds, just like any group, not all individuals get along all the time. Lundi and Setombe’s dynamic might have its tensions, but that’s part of the natural ebb and flow of herd life. Despite occasional conflicts, the herd generally seeks harmony and looks out for one another when it matters most. It’s a reminder of how nuanced and fascinating their social structures are!

What might be the reason Lundi is tracking a lion? I can understand it might be for protection, however, what if Lundi encounters a Pride?
@JimmieBrown-sg8fq11 күн бұрын
Suspect Pride would move out quickly, they know if 1 cow there is a Herd of Ellies nearby not worth the risk.
@herdelephantorphanage10 күн бұрын
Lundi's behavior of tracking a lion could indeed be driven by a need for protection. Elephants are known to be highly protective of their herd, especially the young and vulnerable members. By tracking a lion, Lundi might be trying to keep an eye on a potential threat and ensure the safety of the group. In such a situation, Lundi and the rest of the herd would likely take defensive measures, such as forming a protective circle around the vulnerable members and using their size and strength to deter the lions.

Can you tell us more about Setombe and Lundi? Because Lundi is tight with Tokwe doesn’t that give her an edge over Setombe? Is Tokwe inferior to Setombe in class structure?
@herdelephantorphanage10 күн бұрын
In terms of herd dynamics, Tokwe, as the matriarch, holds no inferiority to Setombe. She leads with authority and strength, while Setombe, being older and highly respected, plays a vital role in maintaining discipline and order. Setombe is the dominant cow, and although she could have been matriarch, her leadership and decision-making skills aren’t as strong. While Lundi’s close bond with Tokwe gives her some influence, it doesn’t necessarily elevate her above Setombe in the overall hierarchy.
@Ohdeedee9 күн бұрын
Thank you for the video, Godknows. I’m confused by the info that Lundi and Setombe are not getting along and usually Lundi moves on when Setombe stands nearby. Has this happened for a very long time ? I thought the only issue with the herd is Mambo being overly excited towards Timi (and once with Khanyisa - she’s too young! lol) Well, that and how Mambo likes to practice fighting with Lindoga/Lindogo since they are both male teens. Are there any other couples that don’t quite get along ? I understand it’s not typical for males and females to be together in groups like HERD. Is that why there are issues between some of the male and female elephants? Thank you again. Oh and I apologize for the misspelling of some of the names!
@herdelephantorphanage9 күн бұрын
Elephant dynamics are fascinating and complex. Lundi and Setombe's relationship has its ups and downs, which is common in elephant herds. Like humans, elephants have individual personalities, and conflicts can arise. As for Mambo, young males are often playful and a bit rough, which is part of their social development. In mixed groups like HERD, where both males and females are present, additional challenges can arise. Ultimately, herd dynamics are shaped by factors like age, gender, and individual personalities, and the team on the ground plays a crucial role in managing these relationships for the well-being of all the elephants."
