the '80s and late '70s films were such a cinematic shock and awe to that generation : it was the last great decade when gfx, acting and story telling were still making great strides : it had actually been like that every decade since the invention of cinema : whole townsfolk queuing round block for hours to get to cinema screen, weeks after release. Everyone, kids, young adults, old ones, were stunned by ghostbusters. Never anything like it before, AND it was a great film. With VHS tapes, i remember being in houses where as kids we'd witness the adults rewind and replay the ghost scenes over and over and over again. Same with the gutbusting scene in Alien. That golden age of cinema began to fade in mid to late 1990s, somehow with the ease and automation of making GFX and films came a cheapness and shodiness. Sure there's been plenty of good films in the last 20 years. but somehow they don't have the shock and awe characteristic of prior generations of cinema.

One of the original jump scares I remember as a kid. The whole cinema audience absolutely screamed the roof off when this happened. Ghostbusters was pure Comedy Gold combined with a bit of spooky drama ie the whole "end of days/apocalypse" as the end of the 20th century approached. No wonder it is still a classic as the characters are flawed individuals and typical everymen, dealing with a high concept (albeit supernatural) phenomenon that they themselves aren't quite sure how to deal with....

Such a well written screen play. Not a single wasted line, everything builds upon the story, character, and plot, without wasting a moment of the audiences time. Everything is concise and well shot. It is an example of what movie writers should do. So much better than the horrible, aimless, talentless 2016 attempt to copy it.

The premise of that movie was crap, poor script and way too much improvising. "They were funny on SNL, so we'll just let them ad-lib the whole movie."

This gave me nightmares as a kid! This scene should've done for libraries what Psycho (1960) did for showers!

When Pete Venkman says "someone blows their nose and you wanna keep it" to Egon!! Gets me laughing everytime!!!😂😂

I read that the bookshelf fell down by accident. That could have been a major accident on the actors, but Murray and Akroyd improvised their reaction and kept on going.
@afriendofbean2 жыл бұрын
@Roberto Suarez If that was true, then maybe Bill Murray added that line when he said to Dan Akroyd "has that happened to you before, first time?" and Ray only shook his head because he had no lines there.

This is the PERFECT way to setup a movie. The scene seems so ordinary, without anything strange happening....but then the calm but eerie music starts and then a few books float across the isle.........did she see it? Then when the card drawers slide out and the cards start flying out, that's when it gets scary, because you don't know what's pulling them out and how can they fly out so fast? Seriously this has to be one of the best way to setup a movie!

'No human being would stack books like this' - Took many years to realise Venkman was being sarcastic in this scene.

Ha ha ha funny. I just made a similar comment here about 10 minutes ago. When I was a kid watching this in the mid 80's, when Peter said no human being would stack books like this I didn't know what sarcasm was. Watching this as an adult gives me such a different look on this movie and how wonderful it is when compared to 98% of movies made today.

@@OldieWan I know right? Just like when Dana said 'that's the bedroom, but nothing ever happened in there' and Venkman said 'what a crime' Best film ever.

The sarcasm is so dry and deadpan, too. Like, an actor today would use sarcastic inflection and eyerolls to convey it. Murray just knew by looking bored and contrasting to the interest of the others would convey it well enough. Skillful!

It's funny watching it now but this in a cinema in 1984 was bloody terrifying. It definitely had an impact on me.

Ghostbusters (2009) really builds upon the Gray Lady making her a victim of the Gozerian Cult.
