This is your BEST video! Thank you for explaining this so well - so much in this video: SC compression, M/S Eq'ing and some other cool tips like adding harmonics to Side, using Trackspacer to create a stero effect, and insights into your mixing decisions. Thank you!!!

great tutorial! i also learned some ableton shortcuts too like the mapping plugins to a key to turn them all on/off for A/B listening, or viewing the MIDI notes of two tracks together in the piano roll

Excellent video, especially your emphasis on composition. It’s so important to have a clear and concise goal and understanding of where each sound sits in the frequency spectrum and obviously it’s always dependent on what key you choose to write your track in

Great vid as always man. Yeah I loved trackspacer when I first got it but I found it pretty cpu heavy so now I tend to use side chain on the dynamic eq in tone booster eq4 for a similar effect. It’s slightly less precise but I think it’s training my ears better because I have to dial in the right frequencies.

you can also experiment with controlling the ducking behaviour in Eq8 with a couple of envelop followers. It works nicely for monophonic stuff ie kicks and bass. envelop 1 ducks the freq in the sub triggered through the kick channel, the second triggered by the snare gets the higher mid range out of the way. check this out --> Mixing 808s & Kicks with Envelope Follower | Ableton Live Tutorial Sometime you want to compress up rather than compress down that's also possible with an EQ I guess. Combining multi band compressors / ott and envelop followers is also worth a try --> look up multiband sidechain with envelope follower in ableton live

Can ableton's built-in multiband compressor be used similarly if side-chained? If so, what are the advantages of using trackspacer instead?

Thanks for the intro to this. Have you played with F6 from Waves? I've had it for a while and it offers dynamic eq, but I haven't dove in to much sidechaining with the dynamic eq. This definitely looks like a simpler workflow.

How is the phase when the kick and sub bass hit at the same time?. A lot of frequency specific ducking can cause phase issues.

Question - in sidechaining bass and kick , you don’t need to activate the Sidechain button in advance preferences of Tracksoacer?

Anthony, I'd love YT lessons or a full course on live electronic performance. Namely how to incorporate as many live elements into the performance as is sensible without overwhelming you, finding opportunities for improvisation/jamming, and probably most importantly, arrangement for live performance versus studio production.

funny you mention it cause i found it hidden under a rock! Jokes aside. I don`t think that Sub-Frequencies when referring to bass means "Subsonic" . To me "Sub" referring to bass is the lowest bass as in "Sub-under the bass" , or below what a normal bass sounds like. A normal bass like and E-bass while reaching below 100hz will have most energy above 100hz while Subbass lives below 100hz , maybe better set below 80 hz. To the "we dont hear below 60 but feel" i would say that 60 hz is a bit high to claim that we don`t hear it. I can easily hear a bloated 50 hz information. More precise could be saying "we dont hear Pitch that well in very low bass" meaning you cant distinguish which note is playing in the very low regions without upper harmonics but you surely hear it apart from feeling it. Subsonic is a very specific (or better said, specified ) thing and it is everything below the lower limit of human hearing which is accepted to be 20hz. While i love Trackspacer for some things , i very often dont like its sound in a traditional bass-kick scenario. In full band mode i find it useless ducking a bass to a kick tbh. I find that Abletons compressor sounds much more transparent when sidechaining (full band). In your example at 2:26 i believe sidechaining using Live`s compressor would sound better. It does not 100% of the time sound better but on this type of combination i lay my hand on fire for it. The baseline does not have this much of very deep information and the kick is very short which already is not that hard to combine to this bass imho. It becomes much more difficult when you have a long decaying kick and try to combine it with a very deep sub. Then trackspacer can come in handy. This multiband way of approach like Trackspacer has its flaws as it impacts the sound above the set sidechain filter area. Meaning if you set it to work-duck a channel only below 100 hz it will still change the sound above 100hz also.
