I'm a Sears suburban guy, but that is one of the only JD's I would own. I guess cause I'm one of those old guys, I can appreciate a good old garden tractor. Those Kohlers are great motors and that tractor will still outlast any of the box store throw away lawn tractors....just my $.02 worth.

That's one cool find right there! Sounds great! Those K series last forever! Definitely agree with the theory of not shutting it down at full throttle. Blessings and respect!

These are some of the best lawn tractors ever made. Nothing sounds quite like one starting up. If you have spark trouble, I recommend checking the little switch you hit when you pull back on the shifter to start it. They can get rusty or caked with gunk.
@joshuaperry9375 Жыл бұрын
I actually bought this off neil and I can tell you that switch has been hotwired. I experienced some intermittent spark problems until I unjankified the ground.

not to mention the Chinese junk carbs they build now for them. Those K series engines stayed in production for over 70 years because of how reliable they are.

@themaniacmower Жыл бұрын
Its not normal for those old K series to have leaking floats. Also the pully on the flywheel by the clutch on the driveshaft is technically for a belt driven generator. Also when you start one of those old K series or shut them off NEVER do it at full throttle those older K series are not built like the engines in riding mowers especially the junk you full throttle to activate the choke also those cast iron blocks will crack if shut off without letting them cool down. Love those K series they are the best engine ever built especially if you take care of them those old Sundstrand hydro's are great as well in the older garden tractors like that. love them 140's

I really want an old tractor like this, maybe a 317.. my poor 06' super LT1550 was so miss treated before I got it but still a boss pulled the transaxle yesterday since I am 95% sure its never ever been changed.. Looks like some one at least attempted to pull the fill plug when they stripped out the recessed 1/4 bit

I purchased a Jump Starter after Project Farm did one of his great comparisons. I purchased one each for my two kids as well. They worked great. We followed the charging per the included instructions. Three out of three will not hold much charge and will not turn over any electric start engine now. Have you had your jump starter for a year yet and is it still working as it was? Thanks!

I wouldnt be surprised if the spools are stuck in the hydraulic valve. And JD loved to bury them in a tight space under the tractor. Fun job getting one in and out hahaha
@joshuaperry9375 Жыл бұрын
I've taken them out and put them in some john Deere 400s and I don't find it too hard if you take the fender pan off. I actually bought the tractor in this video and what was wrong with the hydraulics was the levers were stuck together.

These machines are only valuable if they have attachments and everything works correctly. One of my neighbours recently had a similar tractor, it was a nice clean example it had the mower deck and snowblower, but the rear end died, believe me he didn’t get anywhere near what he paid for it or had invested.

Not true at all a non running 140 H3 is a $1000 machine all day with no attachements. A running one is $1500 easy where I live. A 200 series running with no attachements is $800-$1000. I paid $200 for my nearly perfect 212, kid didn't know what he had. I've had multiple people people offer me $800 for it and I'm not selling it because I can't afford to replace it.

Hyd prob not bad. The circuit you are trying- the inside lever- are for the mower deck and drawbar for a tiller. That particular circuit has a “float” function where it will pick up the implement but not force down. You would have to hold the actuator arm to know if it is working. The other two levers (middle and outside) are for a plow or snowblower. You would have to have either of those attachments loaded yo know if those circuits work, or have a pressure gauge plumbed into those lines. The charge pump that runs the implement hyd on that machine also provide positive psi for the hydrostatic drive, so chances are if the hydrostat works, so does the implement hyd. These machines have some issues, notably old rotten hyd hoses- (there are only 2). Electrics are common to all others, cosmetics are a thing, there is work there certainly. Motor sounds good, starts like it should. Prob another 30 yrs left in the motor property taken care of.

That's a $1200-$1500 machine here in the Midwest regardless of the issues. I've never seen a Kohler K carb issue unless it was dirty or the float had pin holes in it which happens to all old carbs. Most people are too lazy to rebuild or fix a carb so they buy a $20 chinese one that isn't made right. The Kohler K and cast iron Briggs & Stratton were the last good small engines and that's a fact. Everything now is chintzy aluminum and have plastic cams. Even the early Toyota built Briggs Vanguards aren't that good, Kawasaki, and Kohler V twins all have plastic cam gears, some full plastic cams. The Kohler magnums and opposed twin Briggs are ok. Tecumseh and Onan are junk with zero parts availibility. $200 plus for a used Tecumseh solid state coil and $300 to convert to battery ignition because the only company that makes the conversion is some guy in his garage.
