Welcome aboard. I think a winch happens to be one of the most useful pieces of equipment made for a tractor.

Great video, I appreciated the level of detail and really like your ideas with the chains. Muddling around with them can cost a lot of time and I plan on implementing your techniques. I've had the same experience with chains less than 3/8" not being able to withstand the loads of winching and skidding. I've blown out a few PTO shafts also, and it seems that aligning it horizontally with the lower links, seems to help. Basically reduce the angles on the shaft and make it as straight as possible. This makes the winch sit off to the side a bit with our setup, but is better than breaking a PTO shaft. Thanks for the information, good stuff.

Thank you. I know a relative of mine had a different model of winch that had an offset shaft and he had the same issues you speak of. Thanks for watching.

Thank you for the info. I do some small logging with my john deere and a small winch. The figure 8 hitch will be tried. Common sense and I never used it. I will now...... Thanks again

Thanks for the tips, I am sure they will be handy. You may know the trick of flipping your chainsaw upside down in the vice, for filing.

I have never filed in a vice. I was taught at thirteen to file with my chainsaw held between my knees. Thanks for your kind comments.

@@ERLong-ww7yn I learned to file that way as well. Lots of 2, 3 and some 4 ft trees,here, on the North West coast. I have been cutting stumps very close to the ground and beating up the ground side teeth. I saw a boat builder filing upside down last year and was surprised how much my uniformity improved. Then I bought a grinder. Now I have a boxes of files. 🤔🙃🖖

I like the clevis on the end of the chain. That 3/8s clevis pin will go through a 5/16s chain? I cant seem to get this combo to work.

I talked to you a few years ago at a time we both lived in N.B. I was wondering are you still logging. I enjoy your videos. Thanks for sharing. My logging is limited these days. I fell down the stairs and busted up my shoulder. It's ok but I am limited as to how much I can use a power saw. It is getting better but it has been a year since I did it. I am 59 now so it take more time to heal. Take care and don't fall down the stairs. Ray.

Sorry to hear that Ray. Yes I'm still logging. Last summer was really busy with the sawmill as well. Covid drove lumber prices through the roof, and we ran the mill pretty much six days a week. Take care, my friend. I suffered a shoulder injury years ago. I know how it can set you back.

You mention GR70 chains , but GR70 chain are a binder chain, that will stratch and break, GR80 and GR90 chains are to be used, since you are lifting the logs to some extent. They will also enable using a smaller diameter and lighter chain.

Hi Allen. Thanks for the note. I have yet to break a Gr70 chain, and I've yarded white pine logs in excess of 35" on the butt. Thanks for watching.

Do you run the cable through your lower pulley? I found that when I use the lower pulley the cable gets kinked. Yes it is easier on gear and a better place to pull from but most times I don't pull hard so doesn't seem to be worth my while dealing with a curled cable.
@ERLong-ww7yn
@ERLong-ww7yn 7 жыл бұрын
I only use the bottom pulley If I'm pulling something in from the side that might cause the tractor to tip.

You have the arms of the tractor mounted on the top pin. Why the top hole not the lower one?
@ERLong-ww7yn
@ERLong-ww7yn 7 жыл бұрын
This model of Kubota has one draw back: the arms are really short when you consider the distance from the wheel radius to the ends of the arms. Thus, if I put the pins in the lower holes, the top link has to be let out really long to avoid having the top of the brush guard hit the roll bars when the winch is raised. Letting the top link out that long then creates issues for the PTO shaft, which has to be cut really short to start with. Call it the perfect storm of issues. Lol besides, the M8200 has sufficient clearance that using the top set of holes has never been an issue.
