Lots of machine work, parts making, figuring, redesigning and a discussion about factory tolerances. This video was getting too big for anybody to bore their way thru so I have decided to make it a multi part since I am making multiple parts. Feel free to ask questions as this has really been a rushed deal and my go pro battery must be on the fritz as it keeps dying on me after maybe 30min of filming so I didn't get a bunch of stuff on video. Sorry!

Nothing in the world like a get-er-done, hands-on mechanical engineer. There's no way you could design this and explain it to an everyday machinist. It's one of those, "Get out of my way and let me do it," kind of things. :-))

Brian I absolutely understand your explanation of manufacturing. I was the Manufacturing Director at our plant for years . My policy was "We make parts to the blueprint.. We do not make perfect parts" if it does not meet the blueprint then it is defective but there are always tolerances built into the blue print to allow for manufacturing at quantities that are profitable to the manufacturer . Thanks for pointing that out. I love expert craftsmanship but sometimes I just have to cringe when some people are trying to hit the Bulls eye on a hole that has a mile of clearance engineered into it.. Thanks again for keeping it real.

Quite fascinating to watch and listen to your explanations of what you are doing. what is the bigger input shaft from and is the hydraulic pump for a specific lubrication purpose in this transmission? What are those last components you were working with? - Clutch packs or something totally different?
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 9 жыл бұрын
Dan Whiteford The input shaft is from a big 4wd tractor, which needs more capacity because it drives 8 big tires instead of 4. The hydraulic pump is the pressure lube for the trans but also provides steering and brakes. The last piece was the clutch pack for the planetary gear set that allows shifting up and down on the fly. I machine and add clutches to them to get them to hold the extra power. Any more questions feel free to ask!

Brian, thanks for the video..I worked for a Deere dealer years ago and had the opportunity to work on a couple of those transmissions. I was wondering if you have needled any differentials for the pulling guys. I would enjoy watching that process..thanks again.

Hi Brian, throughout the video, I kept thinking about the spacer plate, I know you said it was a burn out, but is it actually flame cut, or plasma or waterjet ? I ask because it looks as though it still has the mill scale on it and I was wondering if you had to true the flatness up on both sides from warping, I would have thought with the mass of a piece that size with the thin walls, the stress from the burning would warp it some. I'm guessing you put the hole pattern in it, I'd have to think that was no easy task either. Great job, great work, looking forward to the next part, and if it's OK with Bailey, it's OK with me! LOL Mike
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 9 жыл бұрын
Michael Reggie I think they use a big plasma, it definitely wasn't water jet cut, it could have been power torched but if it was it was a damn good one. It is still good and flat and yep drilling all those dowl and bolt holes in their proper locations is no small feat, especially when you have to decide where those locations are since I have no blueprints. Thanks for the compliments Mike. Brian

..hard to tell what they cut it with....I've done a lot of OX-ACET and Plasma....this might be plasma....it can be done underwater to control heat, and the new high-def stuff gives very clean cut edge, but a slight angle is usually left....this piece appears to have some finishing done later.....Waterjet maybe, but slow and not used too much on carbon steel plate.....both have about the same resolution....maybe .005" or so....12-15 thou kerf....

How did you make spacer plate? Did you make a template or did you actually measure and layout all the holes? Was it cut on a plasma table or cut free hand? Great video and nice work!!

Fred Newman I gave ALRO the gasket and they burned it out so all I had to do was align it and put the holes in it in the right spot, which I laid out.

They are out of my house. They used to be in the barn but I moved them to safer storage. They came from the upstairs fireplaces that were closed off back in the 60's when they put in central heat and air.

bcbloc02 do you run multiple motors through it? and is there a reduction box that is hooked up before that and how do you couple multiple motors. I am just curious. I dont want to waste your time. Maybe send me a website if you can on how these tractors work and what is involved, thanks for your previous response.
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 8 жыл бұрын
ChiefJustice Middleton It is a single diesel engine in what is a highly modified farm tractor. There is a class of multi engine vehicles in pulling called modifieds but I have not personally ever fooled with any of them. SCS and Profab both make a lot of gearboxes for hooking multiple motors together.

What you said makes a lot of sense !! did you design the tranny mods and what is the name of the tractor that this is going in to !!
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 9 жыл бұрын
gizzo123us Yes this is totally my contraption. I specialize in building things others wont. There are lots of cookie cutter parts available but if you want something new most shops shy away from it because it is a lot of work and many shops have guys that can make parts but they can't design them, as a mechanical engineer I can do both. I enjoy making the impossible possible so it suits me fine to build outside the box.

I am interested to know why you work off the floor and not a bench? Definatly not critisizing just interested.
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 7 жыл бұрын
Because I lack space for a bench and the only flat surface that doesn't seem to be a magnet for everything to lay on is the floor. Someday I hope to have a nicer workspace to include a welding table and an assembly bench.

I ran across this video of you building a transmission for a john deere pulling tractor. I also transmissions for these but I build them differently. I make new shafts and all new gears. All the ones I have done for syncros. I never did one for a quad range but they are similar. Heres a few pictures of one of mine. s912.photobucket.com/user/cuttergrinder/media/Small%20block%20john%20deere%20three%20speed/johndeere40103speed.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0 s912.photobucket.com/user/cuttergrinder/media/Small%20block%20john%20deere%20three%20speed/johndeere4010threespeedpinionshaft.jpg.html?sort=3&o=1
