The age old question when it comes to food plotting and land management is 'what is the best tractor implement for food plot tilling?' Well, in today's episode I am not going to fully answer that question, because it is only a food plot vlog, but if you pay attention to the video sections you may develop some ideas on your own. The reason that I am not going to FULLY answer this question is because it is actually a much more complex answer than one might consider when you factor in so many different variables when it comes to land management and food plotting soil preparation and so forth. But in today's food plot vlog you WILL get a quick side by side comparison of my Rhino HD power tiller vs. my Chisel Disc harrow and get a good feel for these 2 pieces of equipment. Stay tuned to the channel as it is on my video list to do a full, and in-depth comparison of the chisel disc vs. the disc harrow vs. the tractor power tiller, as there are SO many variables to take into consideration! Thank you and I hope to see you on some future videos! Kapper Outdoors, living the dream, one acre at a time.

Less to go wrong with a disc harrow. Makes a acceptable seed bed without over processing the soil. Good comparison.

No doubt but good to have options. Thanks

Tiller HAS to make best seed bed, hands down. BUT, at what cost? Higher initial cost. Much higher maintenance costs! For someone that tills their own garden once a year, they may never wear out a tiller. Food plotting, tilling acres at a time, very different. Good subject.

Excellent points! I am going to cover all that when I get around to the full video. Thanks!

The tiller does a finer smoother job, but slower than the chisel disk when you need to do many acres.

How deep can you set the tiller to turn the soil? I would think the deeper the better. Never got to use one- just discs and chisels. Done some oneway on initial ground breaking and plant killing on field/ plots that were rock hard

I'd say you can cut 6 to 8 inches deep. All depends on what your goal is, to mix and aerate the soil or just spin up the top 3 inches to plant. Thanks

My experience with those tillers in clay soil is that it turns it into concrete because it over processes it. Looks nice right after though.

yep no doubt about that! Especially if you get heavy rains to pack it down and then a drought. But when I till I am sure to plant it right away, then drag it and then cultipack it, so it does reduce what you are describing. Thanks

Looking forward to a your comments on the comparison. I have an 8' disc with the serrated disc's and an 8' drag attached. I also have a 6' rototiller. In my mind the rototiller does a better job but it is much slower and I have to make sure at the end of each pass I gently lift it up to avoid dead furrows. Thanks, Bob

I usually don't disc or till very deep, as I just want to turn enough soil for good seed to dirt contact.

I will compare all 3 when I get to that vid. You are right in your assertions too, the tiller is great, but has limitations, high risk of breakage in any kind of rough terrain, etc. Thanks have a good one

Your tiller pack's the soil very hard by spinning on that ground. The reason we don't farm with them

Good comparison video. I absolutely cant do without my chisel plow (mine doesn't have the disks). Need some residue left on top of the ground, so the chisel disk/plow works great for that.

Here in Western New York, I've owned both ,and a tiller is nice however our ground and soil here is full of rock ,rock and more rock every year more rock lol ,very hard on a tiller and way slower breaks tines ,gearboxes ect . A disc harrow / chisel for me here is way faster economical ,cheaper, and more durable ,first time breaking ground it takes time but after that ground turns up real nice.

yep no doubt about that! There are a LOT of variables! Rocks, big roots and small stumps are the enemy of the power tiller!! Thanks man and good luck with the NY rock gardens!! lol

I say time verse cost. The chisel disk covers more ground faster and at less time and fuel cost. The tiller makes a better seedbed on a smaller plot but takes more time and fuel to get it done. For food plots speed is probably the better choice. For a garden the tiller wins hands down. How many farmers do you see planting corn and soy beans with a tractor and tiller combo. It just doesn't cover enough acres in a day.

Sorry Mr K but I'm in favour of the tiller simply because I think if the tines on the chisel disc were in front of the discs would be a better machine good Video though 👍👍

That tiller leaves a very bad hard pan most roots can't even get through it. Very bad experience with them

it all depends on what you get from mother nature. Same goes for each different kind of tillage. There are definitely pros and cons to each one. Thanks and best of luck.
